Abstract

Thermal insulation for conserving low temps. within a pair of shells of polyester laminates sealed along the interfaces between the shells by use of more glass cloth and polyester resin. Pref. the shells are prefabricated mouldings resembling twin halves of a tube with flanged edges which can be sealed in a GRP channel. Pref. the shells are supported by split disc spacers and the space between the pipe and the shells is filled with a foam generated in situ. Esp. suitable for lagging pipes carrying liquefied methane, e.g. in refrigerated tankers. Offers simple fabrication and installation of a sealed lagging impermeable to moisture or condenstion. The shells may be transparent or translucent to allow inspection for voids in the foam beneath.
