Abstract

The electrolyte is buffered to pH 8 - 13 pref. 10 - 12 with a borate pref. borax and contains one or more perchlorate, sulphamate, chlorate or sulphate anions. Some in a total concn. approx. equal to the buffer anions. Some of the alkaline cations may be replaced by quat. ammonium cations. The composition prevents passivation of the Zn cathode. Suitable anode materials are Ni-, Cu-, Mn-di- and Ag-oxide, alternatively an air electrode may be used. The cell pref. contains a permselective membrane separator.
