Abstract

1327391 Vehicle wheels DUNLOP CO Ltd 5 Oct 1970 [8 Oct 1969 6 June 1970] 49339/69 and 27458/70 Heading B7C A vehicle wheel 1 comprises a sheet metal load bearing body member 2 which has a central substantially frusto-conical disc portion 3 and an outer annular rim portion 4 formed from pressed steel and welded or riveted together, the member 2 having a lower member or trim portion 5, e.g. of moulded plastics material permanently adhesively bonded, e.g. by heat sealing, welding or riveting to the side 6 of the member 2 which faces outwardly when the wheel is fitted to a vehicle. The trim portion may extend over the entire axially outer side of the load carrying disc and rim portions or merely cover the portion 3, the trim 5 extending to a position against the welded or riveted joint between the disc and rim portions. The trim 5 has three-dimensional decorative embellishments, e.g. simulated spokes 9 and has cooling vents 7 and a central boss 8. The trim portion 5 has apertures 10 for receiving studs or nuts 11 to secure the wheel to the vehicle axle hub. The portion 2 has raised attachment areas which contact the inner face of the trim portion and to which the trim portion 5 is adhered. The portion 5 may comprise a basic moulding 14 of plastics material incorporating decorative plastics inserts 15, each insert being accomodated in a recess 16. The inserts 15 are secured to the moulding 14 by adhesive or by lugs 17 which project through corresponding apertures 18 in the moulding 16. The trim portion 5 may have separate decorative metal inserts, e.g. the central boss, Fig. 4, comprises a metal disc 19 located in an appropriately shaped aperture 20 in the main trim moulding by a series of lugs 21.
