Abstract

1306551 Vehicle wheels MOTOR WHEEL CORP 17 Feb 1970 7503/70 Addition to 1306552 Heading B7C A composite steel-and-plastics vehicle wheel comprises a steel wheel disc 12 and rim 10, and a plastics portion, 14 and 16, affixed to and covering at least a part of the outboard steel surfaces of the wheel, the outboard surface of the plastics portion having a different contour from that of the covered steel surfaces. The plastics portion comprises a wheel cover 14 of an acrylonitrile - butadiene - styrene polymer joined to the steel surfaces by a polyurethane foam 16. The cover is vacuum-formed and vacuum metallized or chrome-plated. The disc 12 is stamped, and the rim 10 is rolled from cold steel and the disc and rim are welded together. A frusto-conical steel sleeve 18, or 18<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, is inserted through a central aperture in disc 12 and secured either by a back-up plate or tack welding flanges 26 and 24 together. The outboard end 20 of sleeve 18 forms an interference fit with the radially inturned outboard end 36 of a hub portion 38 of the cover. A sheet metal or plastics ornamental hub cap 21, or 21<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, forms an interference fit with the sleeve 18 or 18<SP>1</SP>. Sleeve 18<SP>1</SP> has its outboard end 29 radially inturned to abut flange 36 instead of fitting therewithin. Hub cap 21<SP>1</SP> has spring fingers 52<SP>1</SP> for engaging flange 29. The plastics foam portion 16 is formed by spraying the appropriate steel surfaces with, or dipping them in, a solution of polyurethane, liquid resin, catalyst, and hardener.
