EL PROCESO DE SOLDADURA SE REALIZA EN ATMOSFERA PROTEGIDA, MEDIANTE LA UTILIZACION DE UN GAS INERTE AL QUE SE LE ADICIONA NITROGENO EN UNA PROPORCION VARIABLE DEL 2 AL 25% EN PESO. ES APLICABLE, EN PARTICULAR, AL CASO DE SOLDADURA DE ACEROS INOXIDABLES, CON NITROGENO EN PROPORCION DE 0,15 A 0,25% EN PESO. EL GAS INERTE SELECCIONADO PUEDE PERTENECER AL GRUPO DEL ARGON, HELIO, HIDROGENO O MEZCLAS, O BIEN AL DE OXIGENO, DIOXIDO DE CARBONO O MEZCLAS.
