Abstract
The cylinder gasket (13) of a Diesel engine with separate swirl combustion chambers is cut-out (23) above the cylinder bore. The cut-out is extended (40) to include the area below the swirl chamber. This minimises the thermal stresses set up by contact between the gasket and the swirl chamber insert (37). The radius r1 of cut-out (40) is about 2mm smaller than the radius r2 of the swirl chamber insert (37). The gasket is made of soft material and the edge has metallic reinforcement (24) with extensions (42) in the critical region.
