Abstract
In the drawing of sheet glass 39 by flowing molten glass 38 over a downdraw forming member 37 with linear point of draw 36, for regulating the viscosity of the glass and therefore the final thickness, a cooling probe 20 or 30 is mounted adjacent the point of draw 36, the probe including an open-ended interior supply conduit 19 or 32 having its axis perpendicular to the plane of the drawn glass sheet 39, an exterior return conduit 15 or 33 having a closed end portion 21 or 34 positioned adjacent the point of draw 36, the two conduits 19, 15 or 32, 33 being coaxial and with the open end of supply conduit 19 or 32 adjacent the closed end 21 or 34 for supplying coolant thereto and an inlet conduit 11 or 31 for the coolant. As shown in Fig. 3, the closed end 21 extends downwardly to give an extended cooling area. In a further embodiment similar to Fig. 3, the outer tube 15 is closed off similarly to tube 33 of Fig. 5.
