Abstract

<PICT:0880035/IV (b)/1> Antibiotic F.I. 1600 (or amminosidin) is produced by cultivation of Streptomyces Krestomyceticus (nov. spec.) N.C.I.B. 8995 in an aqueous nutrient medium containing a source of carbon, nitrogen and mineral salts under aerobic conditions until substantial anti-bacterial activity is imparted to the medium, and then recovering F.I.1600 from the medium, preferably by absorption and elution from carbon or an ion exchange resin, either in free form or as the hydrochloride or sulphate. F.I.1600 is a water-soluble basic substance which contains carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen and gives penta-acyl derivatives by acylation. Its ultra-violet spectrum shows no absorption within the range of 220-400 mm F.I.1600 sulphate in 5% KBr has the infra-red spectrum shown in the Figure and an elementary analysis C 30.57-30.8%, H 6.44-7.00%, N 7.19-7.38% and S 8.99-9.08%.
