Abstract

A concrete mix for bulk use or for casting prefabricated parts contains a small amount of portland cement and water together with ground slag and fly-ash from coal-burning electricity generation plant, the slag and ash being of controlled particle size ranges and content. The mixture may also contain sand and/or expanded clay and a foaming agent may be incorporated. It is formed into shape in vibrating moulds or by extrusion and left to dry in air for 24 hours. Where the products are to be subjected to thermal treatment the cement may be replaced by sodium silicate. A pre-mix may be initially prepared from sodium silicate slag and ash and granulated, the granules being hardened in an oven before being mixed with cement and further ash and slag.
