Abstract

A refractory fibrous composition for fire protection comprises by weight 40-80 parts low density finely-divided refractory (exfoliated vermiculite, kieselguhr, sand, furnace aggregate, fly-ash, pumice, perlite, expanded fire-clay), 10-25 parts fibrous refractory (asbestos, slag wool, glass fibre), 0.5-15 parts man-made organic fibre and 5-20 parts sodium silicate. The organic fibre may be acrylic and may be crimped and/or staple fibre 1/4 to 6 inches in length, or in fabric form in which case it forms a facing to a body of the other ingredients in the composition. Panels may be made from a slurry of the ingredients in which case the fabric may act as a filter on which the slurry is cast.ALSO:A refractory fibrous composition for fire protection comprises by weight 40-80 parts low density finely divided refractory (exfoliated vermiculite, kieselguhr, sand, furnace aggregate, fly-ash, pumice, perlite, expanded fireclay), 10-25 parts fibrous refractory (asbestos, slagwool, glass fibre), 0.5 -15 parts man-made organic fibre and 5-20 parts sodium silicate. The organic fibre may be acrylic and may be crimped and/or staple fibre 1/4 to 6 inches in length or in fabric form in which case it forms a facing to a body of the other ingredients. Boards and panels may be made from a slurry of the ingredients, in which case the fabric may act as a filter on which the slurry is cast, filtration being assisted, if necessary, by pressure or suction.
