Definitions

  • the present embodiments generally relate to anti-chafing products, and in particular to anti-chafing spray compositions and uses thereof.
  • Skin irritation may be caused by skin-on-skin rubbing or due to direct contact with fabric, such as t-shirt, socks, etc., or other wearables, such as shoes, heart rate monitors, etc. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as chafing, effects millions of people worldwide.
  • chafing examples include skin-on-skin rubbing, which mostly effects women who choose to wear skirts with bare legs. While walking, the inner thighs of both legs can rub against each other, which can lead to skin irritation, blisters, discoloration and other unwanted side effects. Chafing may also be due to skin-on-fabric rubbing, which often happens with athletes and people who work out. During a physical workout, excessive friction between ones nipples and a t-shirt can occur due to the numerous repetitive movements made during sports, such as jogging, running, etc. This in turn can cause ones nipples to hurt, referred to as nipple chafing, leading to significant discomfort. Cyclists also often suffer from skin irritation, sore butts and saddle sores due to prolonged time spent on their bicycle.
  • anti-chafing products available on the market including anti-chafing gels, creams and sticks that can be used to alleviate the discomfort caused by chafing. These anti-chafing products, however, generally suffer from, among others, stickiness and greasy feel, causing fabric fluff to stick to the body part, to which the product has been applied.
  • US 8,778,406 discloses an anti-chafing aerosol powder and method which prevents or mitigates irritation on the skin of a subject by protecting against or relieving chafing, itching and moisture, and which provide cooling sensation where applied. Comparative experiments with compositions according to US 8,778,406 demonstrate an inadequate anti-chafing effect in a test panel and require a noticeable layer before observing any anti-chafing effect.
  • US 6,949,249 discloses a water-repellent, anhydrous skin protectant spray composition containing one or more actives, one or more rheology modifiers and a carrier. The rheology modifiers are waxes and/or forms of silica and the carrier is mineral oil or a mineral oil replacement.
  • WO2013167536 discloses aerosol-based skin care compositions containing a sebum absorbing powder and a water insoluble mineral compound which is used in the dry washing of keratin materials
  • An aspect of the embodiments relates to an anti-chafing spray composition
  • an anti-chafing spray composition comprising propellant from about 75 % to about 95 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition and solvent from about 5 % to about 15 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition.
  • the anti-chafing spray composition also comprises emollient from about 1 % to about 10 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition and moist reducing agent from about 0.5 % to about 5 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition.
  • the moist reducing agent of the anti-chafing spray composition comprises starch and an aluminum salt.
  • Another aspect of the embodiments relates to a spray can comprising an anti-chafing spray composition according to above.
  • a further aspect of the embodiments relates to a method of preventing or mitigating chafing in a subject in need thereof.
  • the method comprises topically applying to the skin of the subject an effective amount of an anti-chafing spray composition according to above.
  • the anti-chafing spray compositions of the embodiments achieve a desired anti-chafing and anti-friction effect even when applying a small amount and as a thin layer or film onto the skin of a subject.
  • the anti- chafing spray compositions further have the advantage of quickly drying and presenting a non-greasy feel following application to the skin.
  • the present embodiments generally relate to anti-chafing products, and in particular to anti-chafing spray compositions and uses thereof.
  • the anti-chafing spray compositions of the embodiments achieve an anti-chafing and anti-friction effect when applied onto the skin of a subject.
  • the anti-chafing spray compositions can be used by subjects to, for instance, prevent, reduce or mitigate skin irritation caused by skin-on-skin rubbing or due to direct contact with fabric, such as t-shirts, socks, etc., or other wearables, such as shoes, heart rate monitors, etc.
  • skin-on-skin rubbing is a form of chafing that may, for instance, occur when the inner thighs of both legs rub against each other while walking or running.
  • the skin-on-skin chafing may cause skin irritation, blisters, discoloration and other unwanted side effects. Chafing may also occur due to skin-on- fabric rubbing. For instance, during a physical workout, excessive friction between the nipples and a t- shirt can occur causing discomfort for the subject.
  • Female runners may experience chafing around the breasts due to chafing of the bra at certain points. Cyclists may suffer from chafing, including skin irritation and saddle sores, due to prolonged time spent on their bicycle.
  • anti-chafing spray compositions of the embodiments can then be used to prevent, treat or mitigate the above mentioned, non-limiting, examples of chafing.
  • the anti-chafing spray compositions of the embodiment have a number of advantages over anti-chafing products currently available on the market. Firstly, the anti-chafing spray compositions of the embodiments are capable of achieving sufficient anti-chafing effect and friction reducing effect already when applying a small amount of the product onto the skin. Hence, the anti-chafing spray compositions can be applied, such as sprayed, as a thin layer or film onto the skin and still achieve the desired effects. Many of the prior art anti-chafing products need comparatively thicker layers and more applied product in order to provide any anti-chafing effect. Secondly, the anti-chafing spray compositions of the embodiments dry very quickly following application onto the skin.
  • the skin feels dry already within one or a few minutes following application of the anti-chafing spray compositions.
  • the prior art anti-chafing products requiring application or more product material, take quite some time to dry following application and thereby the skin feels wet and moist.
  • the anti-chafing spray compositions of the embodiments provide a non-greasy feel after application onto the skin, i.e. the anti-chafing spray compositions of the embodiments are non-greasy.
  • Several prior art anti-chafing products in clear contrast, result in a greasy feel and may rub off and stick on clothing and other wearables. Greasy feel and rub-off are typically panel tested and by visual inspection of clothes and wearables.

Description

ANTI-CHAFING SPRAY COMPOSITION
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present embodiments generally relate to anti-chafing products, and in particular to anti-chafing spray compositions and uses thereof.
BACKGROUND
Skin irritation may be caused by skin-on-skin rubbing or due to direct contact with fabric, such as t-shirt, socks, etc., or other wearables, such as shoes, heart rate monitors, etc. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as chafing, effects millions of people worldwide.
Examples of such chafing include skin-on-skin rubbing, which mostly effects women who choose to wear skirts with bare legs.
There are anti-chafing products available on the market including anti-chafing gels, creams and sticks that can be used to alleviate the discomfort caused by chafing. These anti-chafing products, however, generally suffer from, among others, stickiness and greasy feel, causing fabric fluff to stick to the body part, to which the product has been applied.
US 8,778,406 discloses an anti-chafing aerosol powder and method which prevents or mitigates irritation on the skin of a subject by protecting against or relieving chafing, itching and moisture, and which provide cooling sensation where applied. Comparative experiments with compositions according to US 8,778,406 demonstrate an inadequate anti-chafing effect in a test panel and require a noticeable layer before observing any anti-chafing effect. US 6,949,249 discloses a water-repellent, anhydrous skin protectant spray composition containing one or more actives, one or more rheology modifiers and a carrier. The rheology modifiers are waxes and/or forms of silica and the carrier is mineral oil or a mineral oil replacement. WO2013167536 discloses aerosol-based skin care compositions containing a sebum absorbing powder and a water insoluble mineral compound which is used in the dry washing of keratin materials
There is a need for an anti-chafing product that dries quickly following application, is non-greasy and achieves efficient anti-chafing effect even when applied as a thin layer.
SUMMARY
It is a general objective to provide an efficient anti-chafing product. This and other objectives are met by embodiments as disclosed herein.
An aspect of the embodiments relates to an anti-chafing spray composition comprising propellant from about 75 % to about 95 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition and solvent from about 5 % to about 15 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition. The anti-chafing spray composition also comprises emollient from about 1 % to about 10 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition and moist reducing agent from about 0.5 % to about 5 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition. The moist reducing agent of the anti-chafing spray composition comprises starch and an aluminum salt.
Another aspect of the embodiments relates to a spray can comprising an anti-chafing spray composition according to above.
A further aspect of the embodiments relates to a method of preventing or mitigating chafing in a subject in need thereof. The method comprises topically applying to the skin of the subject an effective amount of an anti-chafing spray composition according to above. The anti-chafing spray compositions of the embodiments achieve a desired anti-chafing and anti-friction effect even when applying a small amount and as a thin layer or film onto the skin of a subject. The anti- chafing spray compositions further have the advantage of quickly drying and presenting a non-greasy feel following application to the skin. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The present embodiments generally relate to anti-chafing products, and in particular to anti-chafing spray compositions and uses thereof. The anti-chafing spray compositions of the embodiments achieve an anti-chafing and anti-friction effect when applied onto the skin of a subject. This means that the anti-chafing spray compositions can be used by subjects to, for instance, prevent, reduce or mitigate skin irritation caused by skin-on-skin rubbing or due to direct contact with fabric, such as t-shirts, socks, etc., or other wearables, such as shoes, heart rate monitors, etc.
For instance, skin-on-skin rubbing is a form of chafing that may, for instance, occur when the inner thighs of both legs rub against each other while walking or running. The skin-on-skin chafing may cause skin irritation, blisters, discoloration and other unwanted side effects. Chafing may also occur due to skin-on- fabric rubbing. For instance, during a physical workout, excessive friction between the nipples and a t- shirt can occur causing discomfort for the subject. Female runners may experience chafing around the breasts due to chafing of the bra at certain points. Cyclists may suffer from chafing, including skin irritation and saddle sores, due to prolonged time spent on their bicycle.
The anti-chafing spray compositions of the embodiments can then be used to prevent, treat or mitigate the above mentioned, non-limiting, examples of chafing.
The anti-chafing spray compositions of the embodiment have a number of advantages over anti-chafing products currently available on the market. This means that the skin feels dry already within one or a few minutes following application of the anti-chafing spray compositions. The prior art anti-chafing products, requiring application or more product material, take quite some time to dry following application and thereby the skin feels wet and moist. Thirdly, the anti-chafing spray compositions of the embodiments provide a non-greasy feel after application onto the skin, i.e. the anti-chafing spray compositions of the embodiments are non-greasy. Several prior art anti-chafing products, in clear contrast, result in a greasy feel and may rub off and stick on clothing and other wearables. Greasy feel and rub-off are typically panel tested and by visual inspection of clothes and wearables.
An anti-chafing spray composition of the embodiments comprises propellant, solvent, emollient and moist reducing agent. The propellant is present from about 75 % to about 95 % by weight of the anti- chafing spray composition. Correspondingly, the solvent is present from about 5 % to about 15 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition and the emollient is from about 1 % to about 10 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition. The anti-chafing spray composition comprises the moist reducing agent from about 0.5 % to about 5 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition. According to the embodiments, the moist reducing agent comprises starch and an aluminum salt.
In an embodiment, the propellant is selected from a group consisting of butane, isobutane (also referred to as /-butane or methylpropane), propane and a mixture thereof. The mixture could then be a mixture of butane and isobutane, a mixture of butane and propane, a mixture of isobutane and propane, or a mixture of butane, isobutane and propane. The above mentioned chemicals are currently preferred propellants for the anti-chafing spray composition. Also other propellants, or mixtures thereof, traditionally used in connection with skin care products could be used according to the embodiments. A non-limiting example of such a propellant is hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), such as HFC 152A.
The anti-chafing spray composition comprises, in an embodiment, the propellant from about 80 % to about 95 %, preferably from about 80 % to about 90 %, and more preferably from about 84 % to about 85 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition.

A currently preferred friction reducing agent is silk powder. Talc, that can have a double function as an moist reducing agent and a friction reducing agent is preferably used as a moist reducing agent. The anti-chafing spray composition comprises, in an embodiment, the friction reducing agent from about 0.1 % to about 0.2 %, preferably about 0.15 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition.
In an embodiment, the anti-chafing spray composition comprises a cooling agent. In a particular embodiment, the anti-chafing spray composition comprises the cooling agent from about 0.005 % to about 0.3 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition.
In an embodiment, the cooling agent is selected from a group consisting of menthyl lactate (CAS no. 59259-38-0), menthol (CAS no. 89-78-1) and a mixture thereof, i.e. mentyl lactate and menthol. A currently preferred cooling agent is menthyl lactate. The anti-chafing spray composition comprises, in an embodiment, the cooling agent from about 0.01 % to about 0.05 %, preferably about 0.02 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition. In an embodiment, the friction reducing agent may comprise at least one additive. Non-limiting examples of such additives comprise perfume, moisturizing extracts, Aloe barbadensis or Aloe vera products, such as A. barbadensis or A. vera leaf juice powder.
Hence, in a particular embodiment the anti-chafing spray composition comprises A. barbadensis or A. vera leaf juice powder from about 0.005 % to about 0.1 %, preferably from about 0.01 % to about 0.05 % by weight of the anti-chafing spray composition.
The anti-spray composition of the embodiments is filled in a spray can or canister according to techniques well known in the art.
In an embodiment, in order to mix the ingredients of the anti-spray composition, the solvent(s) is(are) first added. Thereafter the other non-propellant ingredients are added one by one during stirring. The resulting bulk composition is then filled into the spray can and the valve is clinched on. The propellant(s) is(are) thereafter filled into the spray can and an actuator is added.
Accordingly, an aspect of the embodiments relates to a spray can or canister comprising an anti-chafing spray composition according to the embodiments.
The spray can or canister can, in various embodiments, be made of aluminum, plastic, glass or tin material in any given size and shape.
Another aspect of the embodiments relates to a method of preventing or mitigating chafing in a subject in need thereof. The method comprises topically applying to the skin of the subject an effective amount of an anti-chafing spray composition according to the embodiments.
The anti-chafing spray composition is preferably applied to the skin using the above mentioned spray can or canister filled with the anti-chafing spray composition of the embodiments. Accordingly, the anti- chafing spray composition is preferably sprayed onto the skin of the subject. A significant advantage of the anti-chafing spray composition of the embodiments is that it is capable of providing sufficient anti-chafing and anti-friction effect even when topically applied, such as sprayed, as a very thin layer or film onto the skin. Thus, only a small amount of the anti-chafing spray composition needs to be applied onto the skin and still achieve the desired anti-chafing effect.
Hence, in an embodiment, topically applying the anti-chafing spray composition comprises typically applying from about 1 mg/cm2 to about 6 mg/cm2 of the anti-chafing spray composition to the skin of the subject. In a particular embodiment, from about 1 mg/cm2 to about 5 mg/cm2, such as from about 2 mg/cm2 to about 4 mg/cm2 of the anti-chafing spray composition is applied to the skin of the subject.
The anti-chafing spray composition of the embodiments may advantageously be used in prophylaxis applications, i.e. to prevent chafing. In such a case, the anti-chafing spray composition is preferably applied to a skin area that may be exposed to chafing, such as skin-on-skin rubbing, skin-on-fabric rubbing or skin-on-wearables rubbing.
Alternatively, or in addition, the anti-chafing spray composition may be applied to a skin area that has already been exposed to chafing. In such a case, the anti-chafing spray composition may treat the skin area by forming a protective film or layer that protects the skin from further chafing and allowing the skin area to heal. The anti-chafing spray composition may, thus, be used to inhibit, reduce or mitigate chafing in a subject.
The anti-chafing spray composition of the embodiments is preferably intended for human use, i.e. the subject is a human subject. The anti-chafing spray composition may, though, also be used in veterinary applications.

Example 4
The anti-chafing spray composition according to Example 1 was used to reduce friction on human skin in order to avoid chafing. The anti-chafing spray composition was compared to anti-chafe Sport LUUB by HUUB.
Three test subjects stroke their hand over the outside of the forearm to assess the friction of the skin area. The test subjects then applied the anti-chafing product on the outside of the forearm according to the protocols presented below. The amount of applied anti-chafing product was determined by weighting the spray can prior to and following application. The test subjects stroke their hand over the skin area to which the anti-chafing product had been applied and stated whether a reduction of friction had been achieved.
Protocol for application of anti-chafing spray composition according to Example 1
1. Shake the spray can.
2. Spray the anti-chafing spray composition from a distance of about 10 cm onto the outside of the forearm from the elbow to the wrist. Repeat this procedure three times.
3. Let the anti-chafing spray composition dry for 15 minutes.
Protocol for application of anti-chafe Sport LUUB
1. Apply the anti-chafe product by stroking it onto the outside of the forearm from the elbow to the wrist and back again. Repeat this procedure three times.
2. Let the anti-chafe product dry for 15 minutes.
The results of the test are presented in Table 4 below. Table 4 - Comparison of anti-chafing products
Two of the test subjects stated that the anti-chafing spray composition according to Example 1 reduced friction. All test subjects stated that anti-chafe Sport LUUB reduced friction. However, all test subjects were of the opinion that anti-chafe Sport LUUB was greasy on the skin even after 15 minutes of drying. None of the test subjects stated that the anti-chafing spray composition according to Example 1 was greasy. Those test subjects that stated that the anti-chafing spray composition reduced friction applied about half the amount of the anti-chafing spray composition as compared to the amount of applied anti-chafe Sport LUUB.
In conclusion, the anti-chafing spray composition of Example 1 was capable of achieving a desired anti- chafing and anti-friction effect with a significantly smaller amount of product as compared to the marketed anti-chafing product. In addition, the anti-chafing spray composition of Example 1 dried quickly and was non-greasy. Test-subjects explained greasy feel (and non-greasy) as The feeling or sensation that a lubricating substance is present on the skin that can be tacky when touched and leaves residue when touched or rubbed either by clothes or by skin.' Non-greasy is explained as the sensation that after the application of the composition, clothes and skin can interact without the sensation that a substance is present in between skin and clothes or between skins (thighs, hand and skin etc.).
