Description

The present invention relates to a wheelchair with manual drive for the motor handicapped, facilitating the lateral transfer of the user to and from the chair, as well as to a set or kit for transforming ordinary wheelchairs.

Manual drive wheelchairs have large diameter rear wheels, to allow manual drive by circular handrails presented by the wheels. These wheels form an obstacle to the lateral transfer of the disabled person between the chair seat and another adjacent seat, which requires the assistance of an assistant, or causes significant fatigue for those disabled who have the manual strength to pass through. above the obstacle formed by the part facing the wheel.

Forward lifting or translation devices have already been provided, but these devices are complicated and require special wheelchairs to be designed.

It has also already been planned to produce a manual-drive wheelchair for the physically disabled, having a frame or chassis, a seat, front wheels or casters and large-diameter manually-driven rear wheels, capable of being immobilized by brakes. wheel, comprising, on each side of the chair, a substantially horizontal guide, a wheel slide having a transverse axis on which the rear wheel is mounted and movable along the guide between a normal forward rolling position and a retracted position in which the rear wheel no longer extends beyond the side of the seat, manually actuable means for immobilizing the slide in said advanced position, and manually actuable means for immobilizing the slide and / or the wheel in said retracted position.

Such armchairs are described in the publications US 2010/133779 , US 2004/080137 , FR 2995209 , DE 10 2008 013453 , JP 2011 104317 and JP 2009 178,492 . These chairs require suitable, complicated and bulky frames, especially in the length direction, at a high cost.

The present invention, as defined in the claims, proposes to remedy these drawbacks and to provide an economical wheelchair assembly or kit, simple to assemble and simple to use to facilitate the lateral transfer of the user.

The invention relates to an assembly adaptable to an ordinary wheelchair, preferably packaged in the form of a kit, and comprising two guides provided with quick fixing means, in particular by clamping, in a substantially horizontal position on each side. of the frame of a wheelchair, two wheel slides having a transverse axis on which a rear wheel can be mounted and movable along the guide between a normal forward rolling position and a retracted position in which the rear wheel no longer projects over the side of the seat, manually actuable means for immobilizing the slide in said advanced position, manually actuable means for immobilizing the slide and / or the wheel in said retracted position, the length of said elongated slide being such that it can, in the rear or retracted position, come out cantilevered from the rear end of a guide which does not protrude or slightly beyond the rear end of the wheelchair, the slider remaining held in the guide by its front part.

The assembly may preferably include a transverse element provided with means for fixing to said two slides, and also preferably with means or lugs for actuating the immobilizing means.

By substantially horizontal is meant a horizontal or slightly inclined direction. Preferably, the guide is slightly inclined downward and backward, at a very low angle, preferably of the order of 1 to 5 °. The disabled user can thus move the rear wheels back with minimal effort, and, when the wheels return to the front, he can very easily move the wheels, despite their initial retracted position, which is less suitable for manual training.

Preferably the means for immobilizing the slide in the advanced position is arranged on the front side of the rear wheel.

In a preferred embodiment, the wheel slide has an elongated shape, the rear part of which has the wheel axis of the chair and the front part of which can have the manually actuable means for immobilizing the slide in said advanced position, and the manually actuable means for immobilizing the slide and / or the wheel in said retracted position, said slide being guided on or, preferably, in a rail.

Preferably, the guide is formed of a profile having a C-shaped section, laterally open towards the outside, the front part of the slide then preferably being designed to be able to receive a wheel brake, arranged laterally on the outside. of the guide in the vertical plane of the wheel, and have means for immobilizing the slide, preferably offset upwards on the guide and capable of cooperating with complementary means, for example in the form of a stop or hole, presented by guide.

The assembly advantageously comprises fixing means, for example clamping jaws, allowing rapid mounting on frame elements of most existing models of wheelchairs, without modifying the frame of the chair.

The immobilization means in the advanced position comprise a manually releasable snap-fit means, and a means for maintaining in the non-snap-locked position allowing the disabled user to release his hands to drive the wheels of the chair to the rear position.

Said slider immobilizing means may be, for example, a pawl, which can be hooked onto a stop, preferably carried by the front end of the guide, this pawl being manually releasable.

However, preferably, this immobilization means comprises a manually operable sliding rod, cooperating with a stop means, preferably a hole presented by the guide.

The means for maintaining in the non-snapped position may advantageously comprise a transverse element presented by the rod or the pawl, and capable of being manually brought onto a retaining element, preferably by rotation during the manual release of the rod or the pawl. .

Preferably there is provided, on a frame element or chair frame, a means for releasing the latching means, in particular rod or pawl, for example a lug, encountered during the movement of the slider near the advanced position, and releasing the rod or the pawl, for example by causing a rotation disengaging said transverse element from the retaining element, when the wheel slide returns to the front, to prevent the user from running the risk of moving the chair without blocking of the slide, and preferably also during the backward movement of the wheel slides.

Preferably, the manually actuable means for immobilizing the slide and / or the wheel in said retracted position, comprise the same locking means as the immobilizing means in the advanced position, in particular the aforesaid sliding rod, which can snap into place. in a second hole, defining the retracted position of the wheels. Preferably, also, a rod release means can be disposed near this second hole.

Particularly advantageously, the rear wheel brake can consist of a single wheel brake movable with the wheel slide, making it possible to immobilize the rear wheel in any position of the wheel slide along the guide. Preferably, this brake is carried by said second slide, or by the bar or rod connecting the slides.

Optionally, the two wheel slides of a wheelchair can be interconnected by a transverse element, so that the user can cause the wheels to roll and the slides to move simultaneously between the forward and retracted positions.

This element can be an axis, preferably non-rotating, connecting the two wheel slides, and emerging laterally towards the outside of each slide to form its axis or pivot on which the wheel is mounted. This element may, as a variant, be formed of a rod, bar or profile fixed to the two wheel slides.

In the case of a folding wheelchair, this transverse element may include articulations, allowing it to be folded up, at the same time as the two rear wheels are brought together when the wheelchair is folded.

In a particularly preferred embodiment, this element can be formed of two or more telescopic parts or otherwise translatable between them, thus forming an element of variable length, for example to decrease in length according to the folding of the chair, or for an adaptation to chairs of different widths.

The guides, with their slides, can be arranged or mounted on either side of the frame or chair frame, externally or internally. In the case of a folding chair, it is preferable that they are placed on the outside.

With reference to Figure 1 to 6 , we see a guide 1, formed of a metal profile in C open upwards (see Figure 10 ), presenting, towards the front and towards the rear, two fixing means 2, 3. We see on the Figures 7 to 12 that the fixing means 2, 3 comprise a bracket 4 with a C-shaped section surrounding the guide 1 and open upwards, which can slide on the guide profile 1, and welded to a vertical plate 5 having four fixed nuts 6. The means fixing 2 also comprises a second vertical plate 7 drilled with four holes at the pitch of the nuts 6, crossed by four wing screws 8 which can be screwed into the respective nuts 6, so as to be able to clamp between the plates 5 and 7, a tube or horizontal element 9 of the frame of a wheelchair. It is understood that after having mounted and tightened the fixing means 2, 3, on the frame element or chassis 9, the guide 1 can be slid into the two brackets 4 to adjust the position of the guide 1 on the frame, after which the guide 1 is immobilized in its stirrups by tightening vertical screws 10 passing through the stirrups.

La différence de hauteur des plaques 5 est avantageusement de 1 à 4 cm, pour une distance de 20 à 40 cm entre les moyens de fixation 2, 3.Preferably the plate 5 of the front fixing means 2 is higher than that of the rear fixing means 3, so that the guide 1 is slightly inclined upwards and towards the front. The difference in height of the plates 5 is advantageously from 1 to 4 cm, for a distance of 20 to 40 cm between the fixing means 2, 3.

The guide 1 receives two slides, namely a front slide 11 and a rear slide, called the wheel slide 12, carrying rollers 13 rolling on the bottom of the guide profile 1 Figures 10 to 12 ). The slides 11, 12 are interconnected by a connecting element 14, for example a bar, rod or profile. On the Figures 10 to 12 , this element 14 is a simple flat bar.

We see on the Figure 12 , that the wheel slide 12 has, in the transverse direction, a wheel rotation axis 15, of the usual shape, on which can be mounted, and held, the wheel 16 of the wheelchair with a usual hoop handrail 17. In its normal rolling position, shown on the Figures 1 and 4 , the wheel slide 12 is arranged at the same level and at a short distance from the original wheel axis of the chair (not shown) located on a vertical frame upright connecting the frame elements 9 and 30, axis of which the wheel 16 is removed to mount it on the axis 15.

The wheel slide 12 has on the other side a tube 18 intended for the transverse connection with the wheel slide located on the other side of the chair.

The connecting bar 14 carries, at a distance slightly greater than the radius of the wheel 16, a conventional wheelchair brake 19, comprising a shoe 20 which can be actuated by a lever 21, in order to be pushed back against the wheel tire.

The front end of the connecting element 14 has, at the level of the front slide 11, a pawl 22, extended by an arm articulated on the bar 14 about a horizontal axis 23, and tending to pivot downwards under the effect of gravity. In the position shown on the Figure 1 and 4 , the pawl 22 is blocked by a stop 24 fixed to the front of the guide 1, which prevents the backward movement of the bar and the slides, the continuation of the forward movement being prevented by a stop (not shown). The front part of the pawl is chamfered or domed to lift during movement of the slider, from rear to front, over stop 24.

We see on the Figures 10 and 11 , that on the ratchet lever 22, is articulated a double bent rod 25, having a first part 26 pivoted vertically in the ratchet arm, a second transverse part and a third part being extended by a handle or lever 27. By pulling the handle. handle 27 upwards, the pawl arm is rotated about the axis 23, lifting the pawl 22, which escapes at the stop 24, then allowing the slides 11 and 12 to slide backwards. In order to allow the disabled person to free their hands after having raised the two pawls 22, in order to then be able to manually drive the two wheels 16 of the chair without the pawls 22 falling back, means are provided for holding the pawls in the raised position. For example, the bar 14 may have a vertical plate 28 chamfered towards the front. The disabled person, after having raised the lever 27 with its rod 26, turns the rod so that its horizontal part ends up being placed on the upper edge of the plate 28, where it is held.

In order to ensure that, during the return forward of the wheel 16 and of the bar 14, the pawl 22 is released without the intervention of the handicapped person, a rod release means can be provided, for example, a lug 29, fixed under a horizontal part 30 of the chair frame and which intercepts the transverse part of the rod 25 to turn the bent rod 25 and release it from the plate 28, causing the pawl 22 to fall downwards, the concomitant descent of the rod 25 allowing its passage under the lug 29.

In another embodiment, shown in Figures 13 to 27 , the bar 14 carries a vertical rod 31 which can slide vertically through the bar 14, and having, at its upper part, a transverse T-shaped part, one of the arms of which 32 has one end, curved upwards, and provided with a handle 33. In the forward position of the wheels, that is to say in the normal position of movement of the wheelchair ( Figures 13 and 14 ), the lower end of the rod 31 penetrates by gravity into a hole 34 presented by the front part of the guide 1, so that the bar 14, with its slides 11, 12, is immobilized. By lifting the handle 33, the disabled person raises the rod 31 out of the hole. 34. A means for maintaining in this position can be advantageously provided, for example, a vertical plate 35 on the upper edge of which rests the other arm 36 of the transverse part of the rod, when the latter is lifted and turned. ( Figures 15 and 16 ). To facilitate this maneuver, it is possible to provide for chamfering the front edge of the plate (like the plate 28), or for the transverse part 36 to extend obliquely to ensure a ramp effect, as shown in the figures. Figures 13 to 27 .

Particularly preferably, provision is made to fix, on the frame of the chair, a vertical lug 37 looking downwards and intercepting the arm 36 ( Figures 17, 18 ) then rotating the arm 36 ( Figures 19, 20 ), when the bar 14 moves rearward, causing the rod 31 to descend, the lower end of which slides on the upper part of the guide 1, the rod arm 36 thus being lowered to escape the lug 37 ( Figure 21 ). It can be provided that if, during the return forward, the rod is in a raised state with its transverse part resting on the plate 35, the lug 37 again intercepts the rod arm 36 and causes the rod 31 to descend, the continuation of the forward movement ending when the rod 31, which slides on the rail 1, is brought in front of the hole 34, engages there by gravity, and blocks the bar and its slides.

When returning forwards, the user of the wheelchair lifts the rod then turns it to rest it on the plate 35 ( Figure 24 ), a second lug 39 being advantageously provided to intercept the rod 31 ( Figure 25 ) and rotate it and disengage from plate 35 ( Figure 26 ). The rod 31, thus partially lowered, escapes the lug 39 then slides on the guide 1 during the continuation of the return forward ( Figure 27 ), until it falls into the front hole 34, then immobilizing the slides in the normal rolling position of the wheelchair. If, inadvertently, the user has lifted and blocked the rod during this movement while before, the front lug 37 intercepts the rod and makes it fall back in order, at the end of the slide's travel, to let it fall into the hole 34.

The end of the rod 34 can advantageously be conical to facilitate entry into the hole and the descent of the rod by gravity.

On se réfère aux Figures 28 à 30.We refer to Figures 28 to 30 .

Once the two guides 1, with their slides and connecting bar 14, fixed to the frame, on either side of the chair, the two tubes 18 are brought together, which then face each other, by a quick connecting element 40 , having, at one of its ends, a fixed rod 41, and comprising, towards the other end, a tubular part 42 in which a rod 43 can slide, between a position substantially withdrawn in the element 40, and a advanced position in which it emerges, over a large part of its length, from the element 40. A locking means 44, for example a pawl or a tightening screw, makes it possible to immobilize the rod 43 in its advanced position.

To join the tubes 18, is introduced into one of the tubes, the fixed rod 41 of the connecting element, the rod 43 being in the withdrawn position in the tubular part 42, then the movable rod 43 is slid towards the exterior, to introduce it into the second tube 18, the blocking means 44 then immobilizing the rod 43 in this position, so that the two wheel slides 12 are secured, the large wheels 16 of the chair move together along of their guides 1.

It is understood that any other connecting element between the wheel slides can be used.

We refer to Figures 31 to 33 , which represent a particularly preferred embodiment of a guide with its slide according to the invention.

The guide 45 is formed of a metal C-shaped profile, with a core 46 disposed vertically and being able to be externally fixed on the lateral edge of the chair, for example by clamping jaws 47, 48, on chair frame elements, for example uprights 49. In the guide 45 can slide longitudinally a rectangular slide 50, between an advanced position ( Figure 31 ) and a retracted position ( Figure 33 ), stop means (not shown) can be provided to prevent movement beyond these two positions. At its front part, the slider has a part 51 emerging outside the lateral opening of the guide 45, and provided, at its upper part, with a horizontal plate 52, located above the upper wing 53. of the guide. On this plate 52, is mounted a slide immobilizer device, schematically represented by a lever 54, and identical to the immobilization device shown in figures 13 and 14 , with vertically sliding rod, arm rod, retaining plate. The upper wing 53 has a front hole 55 and a rear hole 56, in which the vertical rod can snap into place by gravity, and playing the same role as the holes 34 and 38.

Comme on le voit sur les Figures 31 et 32, l'extrémité arrière de coulisseau émerge un peu à l'arrière au niveau du trou d'axe 57.The rear end of the slider has a hole 57 in which can be mounted a wheel axle 58, receiving a large wheelchair wheel 16, on the outer side of the slider. When the wheel is mounted, its tire is located just in front of the wheel brake shoe mounted on part 51. As seen in the Figures 31 and 32 , the rear end of the slide emerges a little at the rear at the level of the axle hole 57.

When the user releases the rod with his lever 54, he can turn the wheel backwards, which makes the slide slide 50 years from its guide, to the retracted position ( Figure 33 ), in which it is immobilized through the hole 56. In this retracted position, the greater part of the slide 50 is emerged in a cantilever from the rear end of the guide 45, but the front part, provided parts 51 and 52, remains in the guide 45 and maintains the slide, and the large wheel of the chair no longer forms an obstacle on the corresponding side edge of the chair seat 59. In addition, the guide 45 can be shorter than the guide 1, and does not protrude behind the back of the chair.

By way of example, the dimensions may be as follows, for commercially available guides and slides:
Guide length 400 mm; guide height 80 mm; guide thickness 36 mm; slide length 400 mm; maximum overhang 290 mm; distance between holes 55 and 56 from 16 to 22 cm, depending on the existing chairs.

On se réfère maintenant aux Figures 34 et 35.We now refer to Figures 34 and 35 .

There is schematically shown a folding wheelchair, with its two wheels 16 provided with their handrails 17, the frame or chassis of this chair having, in the usual way, two upper tubes or side members 30 supporting a seat base 59 and two tubes or lower side members 9, joined by frame elements 60 articulated to allow folding of the chair. On the lower side members 9 are mounted and fixed the guides 1, with their slides 11 and 12 joined by the connecting elements 14. It can be seen that the presence of the guides and slides perfectly allows the folding and unfolding of the chair, once the intermediate transverse link element 40 has been removed.

In the normal rolling position, the upper parts of the wheels 16, with the handrails 17, are arranged on either side of the seat 59 and protrude upwards, to allow the disabled person to maneuver them manually. On the contrary, in the withdrawn position towards the rear, the wheels are erased towards the rear, and no longer encroach on the lateral sides of the seat, the handicapped person then having no more obstacle to slide laterally from his seat 45 towards a chair or any device intended to receive it.

It is understood that instead of producing the various parts and elements which have just been described in the form of a general assembly or kit adaptable to a conventional wheelchair on the market, it is also possible to produce, by manufacture, a wheelchair according to invention, provided, permanently, or on the contrary, removable, the various parts and elements.
