Claims (10)

  1. Electric steam iron having a sole plate (10) comprising a base (15) heated by means of an electric heating element (18) and an ironing plate (21) mounted under said base; a so-called main vaporisation chamber (28) formed in the base (15), closed off by a cover (17), supplied with water by means of a device for injecting through an opening (36) formed in the cover, and having several steam passages (44) which each open out on the bottom face (23) of the base (15) and which are arranged so that the vapour travels in the main vaporisation chamber (28) along a path adapted to assist the vaporisation of the water before reaching each passage (44); and a steam distribution chamber (32) provided in the bottom face (23) of the base (15), communicating with the outlet of each steam passage (44) and being connected with steam outlet holes (33) drilled in the plate (21),
    characterised in that, the main vaporisation chamber (28) being delimited by a peripheral partition (30) on which the cover (17) bears, the steam passages are formed by vertical vents (44) arranged at the edge of said peripheral partition (30), and rising towards the cover (17) leaving, over at least one part, a small space (46) with the cover so as to allow the passage of the steam through said space at the top part of each of the vents (44).
  2. Iron according to claim 1,
    characterised in that the vertical vents (44) are two in number and are arranged respectively on the two opposite lateral sides of the peripheral partition (30) of the main vaporisation chamber (28).
  3. Iron according to claim 2, in which the base (15) and the plate (28) of the sole plate have the same longitudinal axis of symmetry (XX'),
    characterised in that the two vertical vents (44) are symmetrical with respect to said axis (XX') and are each situated substantially in the lateral central region of the main vaporisation chamber (28).
  4. Iron according to claim 2 or 3,
    characterised in that each of the two vertical vents (44) has a minimum cross-section of around at least 20mm2.
  5. Iron according to one of claims 1 to 4,
    characterised in that, the sole plate having a region forming an apex (12), the steam distribution chamber consists of a groove (32) hollowed out in the bottom face (23) of the base (15) and having substantially a V shape, the two legs (32a, 32b) of which extend respectively along the two lateral edges of the base (15), and the apex (50) of which is situated in the region forming an apex (12) of the base (15), each opening of the vents (44) communicating with one of the two legs of the V-shaped groove (32).
  6. Iron according to claim 5,
    characterised in that, in the bottom face (23) of the base (15), there is also formed at least one transverse channel (52) opening out at the two free ends of the V-shaped groove (32) and adapted to route the steam conveyed in said groove (32) to a transverse rear region of the ironing plate (21) via associated steam outlet holes (36) in said plate (21).
  7. Iron according to one of claims 2 to 6,
    characterised in that the two vertical vents (44) are each delimited by a first portion (30a) of the peripheral partition (30) of the main vaporisation chamber (28) and a first vertical partition (48) formed in said main vaporisation chamber (28) and extending close to the closure cover (17).
  8. Iron according to one of claims 2 to 7,
    characterised in that, inside the main vaporisation chamber (28), there are formed two settling chambers (60) which are associated respectively with the two vertical vents (44) and which each have an inlet passage (62) for the steam travelling in the main vaporisation chamber (28), said steam escaping, after passing into the settling chamber (60), at the top part of the associated vent (44).
  9. Iron according to claims 7 and 8,
    characterised in that the two settling chambers (60) are each delimited by a second portion (30b) of the peripheral partition (30) of the main vaporisation chamber (28) which extends the rear of the first portion (30a) of said peripheral partition (30), the first vertical partition (48) delimiting the associated vent (44) and a second vertical partition (64) having, on the one hand, a longitudinal section (64a) connected to the front of said first portion (30a) of the peripheral partition (30) whilst bordering the vent (44) and extending at the level of said peripheral partition (30), and on the other hand a transverse section (64b) connected to said second portion (30b) of the peripheral partition (30) and extending close to the cover (17) so as to form the inlet passage (62) for the steam into the settling chamber (60).
  10. Iron according to claim 8 to 9,
    characterised in that the electric heating element (18) being an armoured element embedded in the mass of the base (15) and having a U shape whose legs are surrounded closely by the main vaporisation chamber (28), the two settling chambers (60) are disposed respectively above the two lateral legs of the U-shaped armoured element (18), said armoured element (18) extending adjacent to each of the two vertical vents (44).
