Abstract

The heat exchanger has a collector plate (10) with a wall. The wall has apertures (18) to receive the ends of the heat exchanger tubes. The wall is shaped to form collets (24) surrounding the apertures, to which the tubes are brazed. The wall is made with thin sections (A) in a selected region (28) surrounding each collet. This allows axial movement of the collet relative to the rest of the plate under the effect of variations in tube length as a result of thermal expansion fluctuations. The thin sections of the wall follow the shape of the collets. Each collet is connected to the rest of the plate by an annular fold (26) with a U-shaped cross-section, having one side which forms the collet and the other the connecting pipe. The collector plate and the tubes are both made from aluminium. The thin sections are made by moulding or removing material from one or both sides of the plate.

Description

The invention relates to a heat exchanger which can be produced in particular in the form of a charge air radiator for a motor vehicle.

The heat exchanger of the invention is of the type comprising a collecting plate which has a wall in which are provided holes suitable for receiving the ends of the tubes of a bundle, the wall of the collecting plate being configured so as to form collars around the holes for a connection by brazing with the tubes.

In heat exchangers of this type, the collecting plate is capped by a collecting box so as to provide a chamber capable of being traversed by a fluid which also circulates in the tubes of the bundle.

Usually, two manifolds are provided respectively at the two ends of the tube bundle.

For certain types of heat exchangers, in particular in the case of charge air radiators, the tubes are traversed by a fluid which can undergo significant temperature differences which consequently cause significant differences in expansion.

These differences in expansion can generate stresses at the brazing connection between the ends of the tubes and the collector plate. These stresses can even cause a break in the connection, hence a risk of leaks.

L'invention a notamment pour but de surmonter cet inconvénient.The object of the invention is in particular to overcome this drawback.

It therefore proposes a heat exchanger of the type defined in the introduction, in which the wall of the collector plate has a localized thinning in a selected region surrounding each collar to allow axial displacement of the collar relative to the rest of the collector plate under the effect of variations in tube length due to differences in thermal expansion.

Thus, the collar is connected to the rest of the collector plate by a region where the wall of the collector plate is thinned, which allows deformation of the wall and, consequently, an axial movement of the collet.

Therefore, the collar follows the movement of the end of the tube as a function of the differences in thermal expansion.

Consequently, the solder is no longer subjected to stresses and no longer risks causing leaks at the connection between the collar and the end of the tube.

According to another characteristic of the invention, this localized thinning is carried out in an annular region which has a shape homologous to that of the collar.

Each collar is advantageously attached to the rest of the collector plate by an annular fold having a substantially U-shaped section and having a branch which constitutes the collar and another branch which constitutes a connecting branch.

In such a case, this localized thinning is achieved in this branch of attachment.

According to another characteristic of the invention, this localized thinning is carried out by stamping or removal of material, either on one face of the wall of the collector plate, or on both sides of the wall of the collector plate.

The invention applies in particular to a heat exchanger in which the header plate and the tubes are made of aluminum.

In one embodiment of the invention, in which the collar has an elongated shape suitable for receiving a flat tube, the localized thinning is carried out in an elongated region, homologous to that of the collar.

The heat exchanger of the invention is particularly feasible in the form of a charge air radiator intended to cool an air flow supplying a turbocharged engine.

  • la figure 1 est une vue partielle en perspective d'un échangeur de chaleur selon l'invention;
  • la figure 2 est une vue analogue à celle de la figure 1, avec coupe selon la ligne II-II de la figure 1;
In the description which follows, given solely by way of example, reference is made to the appended drawings, in which:
  • Figure 1 is a partial perspective view of a heat exchanger according to the invention;
  • Figure 2 is a view similar to that of Figure 1, with section along line II-II of Figure 1;
  • Figure 3 is a partial sectional view of a header plate in a first embodiment; and
  • Figure 4 is a partial sectional view of a header plate according to another embodiment.

The heat exchanger shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a header plate 10 which has a generally rectangular core 12 provided with two longitudinal edges 14 folded substantially at right angles, to allow the header plate 10 to be capped by a manifold wall (not shown) and define a clean room to be traversed by a fluid.

The collector plate 10 has a metal wall 16, for example made of aluminum, which is stamped to form the core 12 and the longitudinal edges 14.

Par ailleurs, dans l'âme 12 sont ménagés une pluralité de trous 18 qui, dans l'exemple, ont une forme oblongue sensiblement rectangulaire dont la longueur s'étend transversalement à l'âme 12, c'est-à-dire perpendiculairement aux bords longitudinaux 14.Furthermore, in the core 12 are formed a plurality of holes 18 which, in the example, have a substantially rectangular oblong shape whose length extends transversely to the core 12, that is to say perpendicular to the longitudinal edges 14.

The holes 18 are arranged in a single row and are regularly spaced apart.

Each hole 18 is suitable for receiving one end 20 of a tube 22, in the example a "flat tube", which has an external section adapted to that of the internal section of the hole 18.

The tubes 22 are metallic, for example made of aluminum, and their ends 20 are intended to be connected by brazing to the wall 16 of the collector plate 10.

To facilitate this connection, each hole 18 is bordered by a collar 24 obtained by deformation of the wall 16. This collar extends over an axial length greater than the thickness of the wall 16 to allow better connection by brazing between the end of the tube and the collector plate.

In the example where this heat exchanger is used as a charge air radiator, the tubes 22 are traversed by an air flow which can undergo significant temperature variations, from which it results in variations in the expansion of the tube may cause stress at the solder connection between the end of the tube and the corresponding collar.

To avoid this drawback, the invention provides means for allowing the clearance of the collar relative to the core 12 of the collector plate.

In the embodiment of Figure 3, to which we now refer, each collar 24 is attached to the core 12, that is to say to the rest of the collector plate 10, by an annular fold 26 which has a contour homologous to that of the collar and which has, in section, substantially the shape of a U.

Cette branche 28 présente un amincissement localisé A au niveau duquel l'épaisseur de la paroi de la plaque est plus faible qu'au niveau de l'âme 12.This U has a first branch which constitutes the collar and another branch 28 which constitutes a branch for attachment to the core 12. This branch 28 has localized thinning A at which the thickness of the wall of the plate is less only at the level of the soul 12.

In the embodiment of FIG. 3, this localized thinning is obtained by stamping or removal of material from the outer face 30 of the collecting plate 10, while its inner face 32 has not undergone removal of material .

Dans la forme de réalisation de la figure 4, à laquelle on se réfère maintenant, la configuration de la plaque collectrice est sensiblement identique à celle de la figure 3.In the embodiment of FIG. 4, to which we now refer, the configuration of the collector plate is substantially identical to that of FIG. 3.

The only difference is that the thinning A has a reduced thickness.

This results from the fact that an additional material removal has been carried out from the internal face 32, as shown by an annular groove 34 which surrounds the collar 24.

In either of the previous embodiments, if the tube 22 expands lengthwise, the collar 24 may be struggling, in the direction of arrow F, relative to the core 12 of the made of the thinning A produced in the thickness of the wall and in an annular region surrounding the collar.

As a result, the soldering connection (not shown) between the end 20 of the tube and the collar 24 will not undergo stresses likely to cause cracking or rupture of the solder.

Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiment described above by way of example.

It applies in particular to other types of heat exchangers having tubes of different sections and which can be used in other applications than charge air radiators.
