Dans de nombreuses installations de chauffage central, notamment celles qui utilisent des radiateurs de faible largeur placés à proximité d'une cloison, l'alimentation en eau chaude se fait derrière le radiateur par un orifice qui fait face au mur. Sur cet orifice se raccorde un corps de robinet à équerre monté en haut d'une conduite d'alimentation verticale, le volant de manoeuvre étant ainsi monté verticalement le long de la cloison. Il s'avère que le remplacement de ces robinets d'arrêt classiques par des robinets thermo- statiques n'est pas aisé, du fait que ces derniers doivent être montés pour que la tête du robinet- régulateur soit horizontale afin d'être soumise directement au courant de convection de l'air de la pièce. Ils doivent aussi être facilement accessibles pour l'usager ce qui est loin d'être le cas quand le radiateur est proche de la cloison.
