Abstract
Present invention relates to a method for synthesizing precipitated calcium carbonate. The method comprises of two calcium extraction stages; whereby in stage 1) water or an ammonium based aqueous solution is utilised to dissolve calcium ions from the free and reactive calcium phases, followed by removal of solids from the calcium rich aqueous solution, prioi to introduction of carbon dioxide gas into the said solution to precipitate calcium carbonate. The solid residue is then subjected to a second calcium extraction stage; whereby in stage 2) carbonic acid, produced by increased carbon dioxide partial pressure in a water containing reactor, is used as the extraction solvent; followed by the removal of solids from the calcium rich aqueous solution, after which the precipitation of calcium carbonate is induced by decreasing the carbon dioxide partial pressure.
