在该示例中，显示面板22、24和26是玻璃或合适的聚合物材料的无框架面板。显示面板22-26分别在面板的一侧上不包括偏振器。典型的显示面板包括两个偏振器；一个在背光侧附近，而另一个在顶部或可见侧上。在所公开的示例实施例中的显示面板22-26包括在背光侧附近的偏振器，但是不包括在顶部或可见侧附近的偏振器。相反，显示器20包括单个偏振器32，单个偏振器32与由显示面板22-26共同建立的整个显示区域共同延伸。在相应背光侧附近的各个显示面板偏振器将与偏振器32对齐，该各个显示面板偏振器可以与偏振器32成大约90°的角度。
在所示的示例中，偏振器32与盖30共同延伸。在该示例中，偏振器32包括单个整体式件或层。包括跨整个显示区域的单个盖透镜30和单个偏振器32可以最小化或消除视觉不连续性，否则在利用彼此相邻的多个显示面板时视觉不连续性会明显。包括每个显示面板22-26的有效区域和无效区域以及在整个显示区域之上的单个偏振器32有助于或建立与单个显示面板而不是多个面板一致的显示器20的视觉外观，即使包括多个显示面板22-26也是如此。
使用单个偏振器32的一个方面在于：所示实施例不需要沿着与显示面板22-26的无效区域相对应或对齐的区域在盖30的下侧上或显示面板22-26上进行喷涂(paint)。当多个显示面板彼此相邻放置时，包括沿显示器的那些区域的喷涂的传统方法将会中断单个显示效果的连续性。例如，即使通常使用黑色喷涂，当关闭时，显示面板的外观与黑色喷涂的外观也是不相同的，并且在这些情况下将会导致显示器20的外观不连续。利用不具有这种喷涂区域的单个偏振器32避免了这种外观不连续的效果，而是提供了跨整个显示器20的更均匀的单个显示视觉效果。
图2的实施例还包括棱镜34，棱镜34具有在相邻显示面板22-26之间的每个界面38处的反射表面36。在该示例中，反射表面36包括镜面。表面36相对于显示面板22-26的前表面或显示表面以一倾斜角定向。在一些实施例中，表面36相对于对应的显示面板的表面以至少80°的角度定位。在一些实施例中，使反射表面36以尽可能接近90°的角度定位可以减小或最小化在显示面板中与棱镜34相邻的部分上所显示的可见信息的变形。
参照图3，显示面板22、24和26与棱镜34的示例布置包括：棱镜34覆盖在显示面板22-26中的每一个显示面板的无效区域40上方或与显示面板22-26中的每一个显示面板的无效区域40共同延伸。众所周知，诸如液晶显示器之类的显示器包括有效区域42和无效区域40。棱镜34有效地覆盖无效区域40并且以在无效区域40之上提供视觉显示的外观的方式反射视觉显示中的一些。在没有棱镜34的情况下，无效区域40可以在显示器内看起来为边界或空白区域，这将倾向于显示多个显示面板的存在，而不是看起来为跨整个显示器20的单个或连续的显示面板。另一方面，利用棱镜34，一些显示的内容将出现在表面36上，并且显示器20的观察者不太可能注意到显示器20内有多个显示面板。
在该示例中，控制或驱动显示器22-26的背光模块46的控制器44控制所显示图像的内容，使得可以最小化棱镜34的存在的影响。与在相邻显示面板的有效区域上示出的亮度相比，反射表面36将影响显示器的亮度。与在紧邻棱镜36的显示面板上出现的视觉内容相比，反射表面36上还将存在一些变形。控制器44控制在面板22-26上显示信息或图形的方式，使得视觉内容中在棱镜36附近的至少一些视觉内容相对于视觉内容中远离棱镜36的另一部分视觉内容的分辨率、强度或亮度具有较低分辨率、较低强度或较低亮度中的至少一者。例如，可以相对于有效区域42的边缘策略性地放置将出现在显示面板22-26中的某些显示面板上的某些视觉特征的位置，以最小化棱镜34的视觉效果。以这种方式控制显示的信息或图形内容增强了单个显示器外观，并且避免了车辆内部28中的驾驶员或乘客注意到显示器20中存在多个显示面板22-26。
图3的另一特征在于：盖30是弯曲的。利用多个显示面板22-26允许它们相对于彼此定向以大体上遵循盖30的曲率，而不需要面板22-26它们本身弯曲。与在期望弯曲显示器20时使用一个或多个弯曲显示面板相比，在如图3示意性地示出的具有弯曲盖30的布置中使用平面显示面板22、24和26提供了成本节省。
在图3的示例实施例中，显示面板22-26是低温多晶硅液晶显示面板。它们以板上芯片的方式被配置，这意味着时序控制器(由控制器44示意性表示)不在玻璃上，以减小与显示面板的边缘接壤的无效区域的尺寸。时序控制器是驱动显示面板的时序以便基于适当的数据显示图像的集成电路。
棱镜34提供掩盖或消除显示面板22-26与对应的无效区域40之间的界面38的影响的特征。图4示出了被包括在一些实施例中的另一特征，该另一特征对于解决由显示面板之间的间隙或界面38所呈现的问题是有用的。该示例包括圆偏振器，用于减少显示器20关闭时的空气表面镜面菲涅耳反射以及各部件之间的颜色偏移。在这个例子中，四分之一波长延迟器50被定位在偏振器32附近。偏振器32和四分之一波长延迟器50可以与盖30一起层压。显示面板22和24包括四分之一波长延迟器52。偏振器32和四分之一波长延迟器50、52的角度布置被设置为提供期望水平的对比度和亮度。在给出本描述的情况下，本领域技术人员将能够布置被包括在具有图4的特征的实施例中的特定部件。
图4的布置最小化穿过盖30并反射回来的周围的光或附近的光的反射。如在56处示意性示出的，杂散光或环境光可以穿透通过盖30，但是由于圆偏振器的存在而不会反射出去，所述圆偏振器是通过在盖30的下侧上的线性偏振器32和四分之一波长延迟器50的组合来实现的。与来自显示面板的反射相比，图4的布置有助于隐藏将从棱镜34的镜面反射表面36发生的不同偏转(deflection)。
图5示意性地示出了显示面板配置的一部分，该显示面板配置具有另一特征，该另一特征用于使沿着显示器面板22-26的边缘在显示器20上的显示内容中的间隙的出现最小化。有效区域42包括多个像素60，多个像素60为高分辨率像素。在图5中示意性地表示了与像素60相关联的驱动器电路62。在该示例中，可以沿着显示面板的边界的无效区域40包括低分辨率像素64和相关联的驱动器电路系统66。无效区域40通常必须容纳用于显示面板的栅极驱动器、布线(routing)和玻璃与玻璃结合(bonding)特征，因此不可能在无效区域40中包括像有效区域42中那样的像素60。图5中的示例布置包括可以被容纳在无效区域40的有限空间内的低分辨率像素64。在若不包括较低分辨率的像素64则显示面板将完全无效的部分中包括较低分辨率的像素64允许沿显示面板22-26的边界或边缘提供一些低分辨率的图形内容。这个特征可减少或最小化相邻显示面板之间的任何可见间隙。
由于低分辨率像素64不能以与像素60相同的分辨率显示图形或信息，因此控制器44(例如，参见图2)在策略上控制显示器20的图形内容，使得较低分辨率的信息位于低分辨率像素64所定位的区域。显示器20的图形内容以利用低分辨率像素64的方式被布置，同时避免了显示器20的那些区域在外观上的差异，这是因为如果策略地布置图形内容则典型的观察者将不会或不太可能注意到较低的分辨率。
图5中的布置是用于最小化或消除显示器20内与显示面板22-26的边缘以及它们之间的界面相关联的中断的出现的另一特征。
再次参考图2，示出的示例实施例包括作为分开的面板的显示面板22、24和26，其具有单个背光模块70，而不是每个面板具有单独的背光模块。背光模块70包括发光二极管、光漫射器和膜，以使用本领域中已知的技术和部件来实现显示器。针对所有示例显示面板利用单个背光模块70可在整个显示器20中提供更加一致的图像质量和外观。如果对于多个面板中的每一个面板使用不同的背光模块，则由于这些显示面板的差异，在显示器20的不同部分上可能出现例如颜色或照明的细微差异的可能性增加。利用单个背光模块70允许具有相同类型的发光二极管、膜、和漫射器部件，使得对于所有显示面板22-26存在相同类型的照明和视角。利用单个背光模块70的另一方面在于：单个电接口和由控制器44表示的单个驱动器电路是操作显示器20所需要的全部。
图2的示例实施例的另一特征是容纳背光模块70和显示面板22-26的单个外壳72。在所示的实施例中，单个外壳72支撑偏振器32和盖30的边缘。利用单个外壳72可以帮助将显示面板22-26更靠近地定位在一起，因为不需要为那些面板中的每一个适配单独的外壳。
在使用单个背光模块70的情况下，通过显示面板22-26之间的界面38将可能看到来自该模块的光。该示例实施例包括阻止通过那些界面的任何光发射的挡光元件74。尽管示出了挡光元件74与棱镜34不同，但是一些实施例在棱镜34中包括挡光元件74的挡光特征。换句话说，在一些实施例中，棱镜34提供上文描述的反射性视觉特征和挡光特征，该挡光特征用于阻止任何光以对于显示器20的观察者可见的方式穿过显示面板22-26之间的界面38。
