Abstract

A spark arrestor for a chimney includes a hollow body having an interior cavity, an inlet and at least one outlet.
Several baffles are secured to the body and extend into the interior cavity. The baffles are arranged to provide a circuitous flow path between the inlet and the outlet. Sparks are unable to follow the circuitous path and become trapped within the body.

Description

TITLE OF THE INVENTION:
Spark Arrestor For A Chimney NAME ( S ) OF INVENTOR ( S ) Claude Gaumont FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a spark arrestor for a chimney.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Whenever wood is burned in a stove, there is a danger posed by sparks which are carried up the chimney. This danger is particularly acute when tenting, as the sparks burn holes in the tent and can potentially set the tent or surrounding foliage on fire.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
What is required is a spark arrestor for a chimney which will prevent sparks from escaping into the atmosphere.
According to the present invention there is provided a spark arrestor for a chimney which includes a hollow body having an interior cavity, an inlet and at least one outlet.
Several baffles are secured to the body and extend into the interior cavity. The baffles are arranged to provide a circuitous flow path between the inlet and the outlet.
With the spark arrestor, as described above, a spark entering the inlet of the body on a stream of exhaust gases becomes trapped within the body when, due to its weight, it is unable to follow the stream of exhaust gases along the entire length of the circuitous path to the exit. There are different configurations for such a spark arrestor that would have utility, as will hereinafter be further described.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
These and other features of the invention will become more apparent from the following description in which reference is made to the appended drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation view, in section, of a spark arrestor for a chimney constructed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention.
FIGURE 2 is a side elevation view of the spark arrestor illustrated in FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a bottom plan view, in section, of the spark arrestor illustrated in FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 4 is an alternative embodiment of the spark arrestor for a chimney constructed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
The preferred embodiment, a spark arrestor for a chimney generally identified by reference numeral 10, will now be described with reference to FIGURES 1 through 3. An alternative embodiment of spark arrestor, generally identified by reference numeral 100, will be described with reference to FIGURE 4.
Referring to FIGURE 1, spark arrestor 10 includes a body 11. Body 11 consists of a spark retention tray 12 having a bottom 14 with a peripheral edge 16, an aperture 18 in bottom 14 and a peripheral sidewall 20 extending upwardly from peripheral edge 16 of bottom 14. Peripheral sidewall 20 has an upper edge 22. As will hereinafter be further described, peripheral sidewall 20 serves as a third baffle around which exhaust gases are diverted. A cover member 24 overlies spark retention tray 12. Cover member 24 has a top 26 and a peripheral skirt 28 extending downwardly from top 26. A bottom edge 29 of peripheral skirt 28 extends below top edge 22 of peripheral sidewall 20 of spark retention tray 12. As will hereinafter be further described, peripheral skirt 28 serves as a fourth baffle around which exhaust gases are diverted.
Top 26 of cover member 24 is spaced from upper edge 22 of peripheral sidewall 20 of spark retention tray 12 and peripheral skirt 28 is spaced from peripheral sidewall 20 of spark retention tray 12 thereby leaving an outflow channel 30 for exhaust gases between cover member 24 and spark retention tray 12. A tubular member 32 is secured in aperture 18 in bottom 14 of spark retention tray 12. Tubular member 32 has a first end 34 and a second end 36. First end 34 projects upwardly from bottom 14 of spark retention tray 12. As will hereinafter be further described, first end 34 of tubular member 32 serves as a first baffle around which exhaust gases are diverted. Referring to FIGURE 2, second end 36 of tubular member 32 serves as a coupling, whereby second end 36 of tubular member 32 is coupled with a remote end of a chimney 44.
Referring to FIGURE l, a second baffle 38 is secured to and depends from top 26 of cover member 24. Second baffle 38 extends downwardly past first end 34 of tubular member 32.
Second baffle 38 is spaced from and surrounds tubular member 32 coaxially, as illustrated in FIGURE 3, thereby leaving an inflow channel 40 for exhaust gases between tubular member 32 and baffle 38, as illustrated in FIGURE 1. Exhaust gases rising up the chimney and into tubular member 32 encounter top 26 of cover 24 and must pass downwardly through inflow channel 40 into spark retention tray 12 prior to passing through outflow channel 30 into the atmosphere. Sparks carried by the exhaust gases cannot navigate the circuitous flow path provided by tubular member 32 (first baffle), second baffle 38, peripheral sidewall 20 (third baffle) and depending skirt 29 (fourth baffle) and are deposited in spark retention tray 12 prior to the exhaust gases exiting via outflow channel 30 between depending skirt 28 and peripheral sidewall 20.
Referring to FIGURE 4, alternative embodiment of spark arrestor 100 includes a first tubular member 102 and a second tubular member 133 positioned in a "T" configuration. For the purpose of orientation for this description first tubular member 102 can be considered to have a top 104, a bottom 106, an aperture 108 approximately centrally located in bottom 106, and opposed ends 110. Exit apertures 112 are at each of opposed ends 110. Tubular member 133 is secured in aperture 108 in bottom 106 of horizontal tubular member 102. A pair of first baffles 114 extends vertically from bottom 106 toward each of opposed ends 110. Each of first baffles 114 has a top edge 116 spaced from top 104 of horizontal tubular member 102, thereby forming a passage 118 between first baffle 114 and top 104. A pair of second baffles 120 extends vertically from bottom 106 of horizontal tubular member 102 at a position between first baffle 114 and aperture 108. Each of second baffles 120 has a top edge 122 spaced from top 104 of horizontal tubular member 102, thereby forming a passage 124 between second baffle 120 and top 104. First baffle 114, second baffle 120, and a portion 126 of bottom 106 of horizontal tubular member 102 define a spark retention tray 128.
A third pair of baffles 130 are secured to and depend from top 104 of horizontal tubular member 102. Each of third baffles 130 extends downwardly past top edge 116 of first baffle 114 and top edge 122 of second baffle 120. Each third baffle 130 is located between and spaced from first baffle 114 and second baffle 120, thereby leaving an inflow channel 132 for exhaust gases between second baffle 120 and third baffle 130. Exhaust gases rising up the chimney and into horizontal tubular member 102 encounter top 104 and must pass downwardly through inflow channel 132 into spark retention tray 128 prior to passing through outflow channel 134 and passage 118 into the atmosphere at exit aperture 112. Sparks carried by the exhaust gases are deposited in spark retention tray 128 prior to the exhaust gases exiting via exit aperture 112.
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that modifications may be made to the illustrated embodiment without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined in the Claims.
