Abstract

This invention proposes a harmonization of the scan order to encode the significance map of the transform coefficients, as well as the levels of the transform coefficients. It is proposed that the scan order for the significance map is in the reverse direction (ie, from higher frequencies to lower frequencies). This invention also proposes that transform coefficients be swept in subsets as opposed to fixed sub-blocks. In particular, the transform coefficients are scanned into a subset consisting of several consecutive coefficients according to the scanning order.
