The invention relates to that class of anti- Creepers or rail anchors, in which a rolling member interposed between the edge of the base flange ot the rail and an adjacent lined sui-tace on the tie-plate is engagedor cramped between such edge and surtaceby the longitudinal movement of the rail relatively to the tiesplate. y

The rail may be understood to be oi" the `usual type having the head 5, vertical web ti and inside and outside base-flanges marked respectively 7 and 8, suiiported on a tie-plate ot peculiar construction and held in place thereon and to the tie, not shown, by spikes 1() or other approved means.
O11 the upper tace of the tieplate, near one end, is a. transverse abutment 11 extending parallel with the outer base-liange 8, serving to hold the rail against outward lateral movement, and on the upper i'ace ot the tie-plate, oppositely disposed to the abutment 11 is a transverse shoulderon ridge 12 separated from but lying closelyadjacent to and parallel with the` inner base-flange 7.
In the midlength of the ridge 12 is a depression or recess 13 adjacent the base-Hangs 7 shown as rectangular in outline and eX- tending in depth to the main surface'o't the tieplate 9, and on the vertical face ot the cavity opposite the baseilange 7 is a rack 111 extending the length oi" such tace.
The rolling member 15 lies in the space bew tween the raclrlft andedge of the base-lange 7 and is elliptical in `plan with its periphery perpendicular to its base and is formed with vertical teeth 16 adapted to mesh `with the teeth ot the raclr la.

Thus engaged the longitudinal movement of the rail induces the desired strong trie tional bite or pinching action to increase, with the result that the movement of the rail is ellectually checked, and` by the e'frgagew ,ment oi? the teeth ot the roller with the teeth ot the rack the roller is compelled to malte the partial rotation required to el'l'ect the pinching action and the danger o'lf slipping or sliding movements oli the roller relatively to the tie-plate is eliminated.
The function ot the stud 17 and the slot l 18 is to hold the roller against vertical movcnient. it will be noted that the slot is slightly curved to permit the stud to follow the curvilinear path described by the axis ol the ellipse in its movements, with the result that the periphery ot the stud is maintained in close contact with the side walls ot the slot. Any tendcncyo'f the roller to tilt caused by a lifting movement is thus resisted by the corresponding tendency of the stud to cramp between the confining walls of the slot, and as the lifting strains always are in the direction to tilt the roller the latter is etectually held against such rising movement.

In an anticreeping device, a tie-plate adapted to support a rail, an abutment on said plate adapted to lie ae'ainst the outer base-flange of said rail, a ridge on said plate adjacent the inner base-flange of said rail, a recess in said ridge adjacent said rail, a rack in said recess opposite said inner base-flange, a toothed elliptical rolling member located in such recess, in mesh with said rack and adapted to engage frictionally with said inner base-flange, and a downwardly projected cylindrical stud centrally located on the undcrface of said rollingmember, said tie-plate havinga slot therein in such recess, Said slot adapted to receive said stud, and curved to conform to the movements of the latter and said rolling member.
