SHAMPOO
The present invention relates to shampoo formulations. More particuarly, it relates to shampoos useful for washing the hair of children, who are particularly sensitive to eye irritation that-can be caused by some known .shampoo products.
The invention relates in particular to a shampoo formulation that can be dispensed from a pressurized container as a mousse-type product.
In summary, the present invention is a water-based shampoo product comprising 0.01 to 1.0 wt.% of a quaternary nitrogen-containing cellulose ether of the formula [R cell-(OR) (1) wherein Rcell is the residue of an anhydroglucose S unit; y is an integer having a value of from about 200 to about 5,000; and each R independently represents a substituent group of the general formula -(CH 2a0) -(CH 2 CH(X)O)n-(CbH 2 bO) -(CH2c )-R 1 (2) in which a is 2 or 3; b is 2 or 3; c is 1, 2 or 3; m is an integer having a value of 0 to n is 0, 1, 2 or 3; p is an integer having a value 1 of 0 to 10; q is 0 or 1; R is -COOH, -COONa, -COOK, or COONH4; and X is Cl N(CH 3 3

The present invention contains as indicated several components which in combination provide a product having useful properties and free of undesirable side effects. As indicated, the product includes water, typically in an amount comprising about 50 to about 75 weight percent.
:2i ~1Y_1?_ 3 One component is a quaternary nitrogen-containing cellulose ether of the formula disclosed hereinabove. Particularly preferred are derivatives of hydroxyethyl cellulose, including the compound 2-(2-hydroxy-3-(trimethylammonio)propoxy)ethyl 2hydroxy-3-(trimethylammonio)propyl ether and salts thereof known generically as polyquaternium-10 available commercially from Union Carbide. The quaternary nitrogen-containing cellulose ether can be synthesised following the procedure described generally in U.S. Patent No. 3,472,840. The amount of this component can generally range from 0.01 to 1.0 weight percent. A preferred amount is 0.1 to 0.5 weight percent.
As used herein, an anhydroglucose residue refers to a glucopyranose in which three of the hydroxy groups have been removed from three of its positions on the backbone of the glucose molecule and which is capable of being substituted to the OR group at these positions. Examples of anhydroglucose residue include:
S
6 S
S
C
H I OH HO 1 OH and the like.
The preferred anhydroglucose residue is:

WO 88/05812 PCT/US88/00357 -4- 1 Another component in the shampoo of the present invention is an anionic surfactant of the general formula described above. The preferred embodiment of this ingredient is sodium laureth sulfate (3 EtO), that is, the sodium salt of sulfated ethoxylated lauryl alcohol in which, in the above formula (Alk) is CH 3 (CH2) 11 and i is 3. The preferred component is available commercially. This component can be present in an amount ranging from about 5 to about 50 weight percent of the composition, and more preferably about 10 to about 40 weight percent.
Another component of the present invention is a betaine of the formula given above.
The preferred embodiment of this component is cocamidopropyl betaine, a commercially available product in which in formula above the substitutent (ALK) is derived from coconut oil and j is 3.
aU This component can be present generally in the amount ranging from about 2 to about 20 weight percent of the composition, and more preferably about 2 to about 10 weight percent.
Another component of the present invention is 0.05 to 1.0 weight percent of a polyoxyethylene of the general formula given above. A preferred range is 0.1 to 0.5 weight percent. The degree of polymerization d can be about 20,000 to about 25,000, and is more preferably about 21,000.
The preferred polymer in which the degree of polymerization is about 21,000 is available commercially and is known generically as PEG-21M.
1 ,WO 88/05812 PCT/US88/00357 The composition of the present invention Salso preferably contains benzyl alcohol, in an amount ranging from about 0.1 to about 2.0 weight percent and more preferably about 0.3 to about 0.7 weight percent.
The composition of the present invention can also optionally contain preservatives, such as methyl paraben and/or propyl paraben, in an effective amount which will generally be up to about 0.5 weight percent of the composition.
The composition can also optionally contain components to provide cosmetically and esthetically acceptable fragrance; examples of such components are numerous and well known to those skilled in this art.
The amount of fragrance is generally up to abqut weight percent or may range up to about weight percent.
The composition of the present invention can be prepared by simply mixing together each of the above components in the water base. Preferably, the resulting composition is packaged in a pressurized dispensing system, containing typically 75-99 percent by weight of the composition and the balance a propellant such as any of the hydrocarbons or halogenated hydrocarbons well known 1 for use in this type of application. The mixture and propellant are charged into a pressurized container fitted with an appropriate aerosol dispensing nozzle.
-One example of a satisfactory shampoo composition in accordance with the present invention is the following: l; {3 i I_ I WO 88/05812 PCT/US88/00357 1 Ingredient Sodium laureth sulfate (3EtO) Cocamidopropyl betaine PEG-21M (polymer of ethylene oxide) Benzyl alcohol Methyl paraben Propyl paraben Fragrance Water Amount 0.3 11.2 0.2 0.2 0.1 q.s. to 100 The above formulation was put into an aerosol system at two different ratios: 90% concentrate and 10% fluorocarbon "F 12 14 and 95% concentrate and 5% "A-46" hydrocarbon propellant.
This shampoo vehicle contains both anionic and cationic materials and is relatively mild upon contact with the eyes. It is superior in performance to known shampoos in mildness, cleaning, rinseability and conditioning properties.
