Abstract
Se reducen los niveles de trazas de mercurio en un gas natural lavando el gas natural en un absorbedor con una solución acuosa que comprende un compuesto de azufre soluble en agua. El compuesto de azufre soluble en agua reacciona con al menos una porción del mercurio en el gas natural para producir un gas natural tratado con una concentración reducida de mercurio y una solución que contiene mercurio sin azufre que puede desecharse mediante inyección en una formación subterránea (agotada). El agua producida extraída con el gas natural de la formación subterránea puede ser reciclada para su uso como solución de lavado. En una realización, una fuente fresca de compuesto de azufre soluble en agua como alimentación al absorbedor puede ser generada in situ haciendo reaccionar una fuente de azufre elemental con un reactivo de azufre en agua producida.
