Abstract
Electrodos de hierro se han utilizado en las baterías de almacenamiento de energía y otros dispositivos durante más de cien años. Electrodos de hierro frecuentemente se combinan con un cátodo a base de níquel para formar una batería de níquel-hierro. La batería de níquel-hierro (batería de Ni-Fe) es una batería recargable que tiene un cátodo de óxido-hidróxido de níquel (III) y un ánodo de hierro, con un electrolito tal como hidróxido de potasio. Los materiales activos se mantienen en tubos de acero niquelado o bolsillo perforados. Es una batería muy robusta que es tolerante de abuso, (sobrecarga, sobredescarga, y cortocircuito) y puede tener una vida muy larga, incluso si es tratada. Frecuentemente se utiliza en situaciones de respaldo en las que se puede cargar de forma continua y puede durar más de 20 años.
