I am a member of the House Appropriations Committee and the subcommittee with oversight of HHS and its response to the opioid crisis. I support funding for states to combat the opioid crisis and I have also backed legislation funding research into new pain relief treatments so patients can safely recover without the risk of addiction. I have also supported funding that will help our country find cures for cancer and Alzheimer's. These diseases rob us of our loved ones and we must continue research that will bring us closer to finding life-saving treatments.

“I am grateful my legislation to honor Shandra’s legacy was passed by the House. This bill will help prevent TB infections from bone grafts and save families from experiencing the pain and sadness that Shandra’s family has tragically endured. My bipartisan bill accomplishes this by ensuring the FDA requires screening for TB and holds tissue suppliers responsible for infections they spread,” said Moolenaar.

“I am honored to receive this award from our community health centers, who are an essential resource for Michigan families, especially in rural communities. I will continue my advocacy for them on the House Appropriations Committee so they can continue to provide vital health care services to residents for years to come,” Moolenaar said after receiving the award.

“The passing of Shandra Eisenga was a preventable tragedy caused by a lack of oversight and accountability for tissue donation services. Nobody should have to go through what Shandra and her family experienced. The Shandra Eisenga Human Cell and Tissue Product Safety Act will stop future TB outbreaks and honor Shandra’s legacy. Thank you to Senator Peters and my colleagues for their support of this legislation,” said Congressman Moolenaar.

“No family should have to endure the pain Shandra and her family have experienced. It is long overdue that the Department of Health and Human Services have requirements in place to stop TB outbreaks like the one earlier this year,” said Moolenaar. “My bipartisan bill is common sense, and will require testing for tuberculosis to help ensure TB outbreaks from tissue donors never happen again.”

“Michigan seniors deserve to have options when they need access to reliable long-term care, including the option to receive home care. This legislation ensures that this option is available to seniors and helps makes sure that they don’t need to travel long distances to get the care they need,” said Moolenaar. “This common-sense, bipartisan legislation will cut through red-tape and make sure that the PACE program is available to more seniors. I am proud to introduce this legislation and I will continue to advocate for Michigan seniors.

“The opioid crisis has impacted Michigan families of every background. Unfortunately, this issue has begun to affect more school children than ever before. I am supporting this legislation because it will increase access to life-saving resources and help make sure rural schools in particular receive much-needed funding to confront this crisis,” said Moolenaar.
