Ambio

A Journal of Environment and Society

Publishing model:

Aims and scope

Ambio is owned by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and was founded in 1972, following the first UN conference on the environment.
Ambio publishes research for a global audience on the interrelationships between environment and society with focus on both the natural and the social dimension of sustainability challenges. It is Ambio’s ambition to publish research that speaks to an inter- and transdisciplinary audience within and beyond academia. Publications may lean more heavily on either natural or social sciences, but Ambio articles require a focus on the link between environment and society.

Original contributions can be submitted to Ambio as Research articles, Reviews, Perspectives, News, or Comments. The five categories offer complementary options for presenting novel results and ideas. Authors are advised to check the Ambio Instructions for Authors under Submission guidelines as these are updated regularly. Please also check out Collections and calls for papers to find our Special Issues and Topical Collections.

Ambio has a dedicated group of editors to assist the authors with preparation of their article for publication and broadening the scientific and societal impact of their research. Desk rejections are made within one week and decisions following external review are normally taken within two months.

Ambio is a hybrid or transformative journal meaning that authors can choose between publishing via (1) the traditional publishing model (published articles are made available to institutions and individuals who subscribe to Ambio or who pay to read specific articles), or (2) Open Access (when an article is accepted for publication, the author/s or funder/s pay an Article Processing Charge (APC). The final version of the published article is then free to read for everyone).

If you are uncertain whether your manuscript is suitable for publication in Ambio, please send an e-mail with the abstract to the Editor-in-Chief Bo Söderström (bo.soderstrom@kva.se).

Requests for permission to reproduce material with the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences as copyright-holder should be directed to Editor-in-Chief Bo Söderström (bo.soderstrom@kva.se).
