Abstract
The purpose of this article is two-fold: firstly it attempts to show the theoretical and operational problems facing social scientists in assessing the contribution of the Third Sector to the economy. In this context the first theoretical problem looked at is that of delimiting or conceptualizing this social and economic situation. It then points out the significance of the problem of the criteria used to assess the importance and the role of this sector in the economy. Secondly, using standard assessment criteria and overcoming as far as possible the many operational problems regarding the availability and quality of information, it attempts to present a quantitative approach to the Third Sector in Spain and in other developed countries.
