The Tessel 2 is an awesome opens source JavaScript powered board (though other languages are s 8000 upported too)! Unlike the arduino, wifi is built in by default, and when you write code you have all of npm at your disposal.
You can easily get started using the Tessel 2 by following the instructions here: http://tessel.github.io/t2-start/
Once you're connected to wifi you're ready to start!
The Tessel 2 also plays well with the Johnny-Five robotics library and has a dedicated io plugin that works well: https://github.com/rwaldron/tessel-io
