I thought you would probaly want to see this. I think we should try for WikiNumismatics. You can make proposals here].

Note

I think WikiCurrency should include something about Numismatics. But WikiCoins would be suitable. I don't know of anything else on proposals.
About my signature, you can edit your's by clicking the Preferences button at the top of your screen. Funny you should ask now, I was just working on it, (it's a huge mess now, CSS is not easy to figure out).

Okay

Don't worry I'll fix the typos, and nice introduction too.

Question

I was wondering why you remove all the messages on your talk page. You should archive them instead. Some people don't like it. I don't really care what others do with their talk pages, but some people do. Just thought you would benefit from this.

Happy editing!

Well there are 780,000 articles on the English Wikipedia. If you go here, and click on 'What links here' you can see all the pages that have that template.

If you need any help with references, values, dimensions, et cetera, feel free to ask.

Template

I recently created a new template for the WikiProject. It is meant for images. You can put it on the talk pages of coin images. It looks like this:

{{Template:Numismaticnotice-image}}

About the to do list, it is updated, but the old revision is stuck in your browser history, since it has the same name and metadata it will load the old page. When you save it you see the updated page, when you go to the front page, which you didn't update, it shows the old revision. Hope this explains it, (all browsers do this by the way).

WikiProject Numismatics

Dear WikiProject Numismatics member:

You may have noticed the edits made by user:mom2jandk, and you may have also noticed that I have reverted most of them. I would like to leave this note as an explanation.

mom2jandk is a new user and a clearly enthusiastic member of WikiProject:Numismatics. However, he/she has made several changes (specifically to the categorization scheme) that I reverted for various reasons. Among them, he/she:

  • Created several other categories that either do not fit or fit awkwardly into the categorization scheme.
  • Nominated several categories for deletion, including United States Mint, United States Mint engravers, and others.
    • On the deletion vote for Cat:United States Mint, he seems to be confused as to the purpose of the category; it is, as I said, for articles relating to the government agency known as the United States Mint. There are mints in the United States that are not part of the United States Mint (i.e. the Franklin Mint) and his confusion over this fact seems to be the impetus for the nomination.
    • You might also notice that he nominated cat:Directors of the United States Mint; his explanation is that he broadened the category to "United States Mint officers" so that a Superintendent could be included. The "superintendent of the Mint" to which he referred was Roswell K. Colcord, who was superintendent of the Carson City Mint; there is no such office as "superintendent" for the entire United States Mint (or, if there is, it is distinct from Director of the Mint.)

After reading this fairly lengthy message, you might get the impression that I am attacking either mom2jandk or his/her edits; this is not the case. I have a great deal of admiration for him/her as a new user who is not afraid to jump in and try to improve Wikipedia and the Numismatics project. I hope he/she continues to contribute, and I believe he/she has a great deal to offer. This message is quite long because I wanted to explain the specifics of the categories (many of which, incidentally, were created by me.)

Note that I placed merge tags on most of mom2jandk's categories.

It goes without saying that, if there are any categories that should be altered and/or deleted, by all means make such changes, regardless of whether I or anyone else created them; neither I nor my edits are perfect.

Apologies for using he/she; I assume mom2jandk's user name reflects her role as a mother but I wasn't completely certain.

Thank you all and I look forward to continued work with you in the future. Paul 06:04, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

HMLA-267

Joe, always good to have a helping hand. As I look at the # of pages that need to be created I have to admit the thought of doing it alone was a bit daunting. For the most part I have been taking from the official websites or globalsecurity{they just cut and paste from official sites]. Just make sure that you severly edit the history. Usually I remove all of the POV fluff and the unnecessary stuff about individual exercises they did over the years. I try to keep them to combat and big humanitarian missions, etc.... THe home page for 267 is [1] and the history can be found at [2]. A great page for the insignia is [3] and great photos can be obtained by searching through the official USMC archive. Hope this helps. Yut, Murph--Looper5920 21:42, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

Good pick up on the USMC insignias. That website is a gold mine. Now comes the hard part of actually updating all of the Marines Corps info on this site.--Looper5920 02:10, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

I was trying to keep this conversation in one place (on my talk page), but I'm now giving up. I've noticed a couple of ither things wrong with your welcome template. You should probably move it to User:Searchme/Welcome; the curly brackets, i.e. {{subst:User:Searchme/Welcome}}, will still substitute the text of the page. Then, use {{db}} to request that the original template be speedily deleted. Also, the Wikipedia logo, contrary to popular belief, is a copyrighted image and therefore should be used with discretion in the user and user talk namespaces. There is no enforced rule against using it in a welcome template, but doing so might come back to haunt you if you ever decide to request adminship or any other priveleges. If you need any help, just come by my talk page. --TantalumTelluride 23:35, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

On second thought, deletion probably won't be necessary. Just redirect the old page name to the new one. --TantalumTelluride 23:38, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Be bold!

Sorry about all the confusion. I should have looked at your welcome template more closely the first time. Anyway, a good image might be m:Image:Be bold.png, which is licensed under the GFDL. --TantalumTelluride 03:00, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Oh and before I forget, I was trying to keep these "thank-you" topics together, but there were so many I just posted on the bottom one. Hi I was wandering if you could input your opinion about on this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Turkish_people#The_picture its all about the picture used to show Turkish people. Turkish users object to one of the people in the picture. But someother users seem to be enforcing this person to be in the picture. Hi, how do I make my first Bold Change to an Existing Article?

The original author(s) indicate that someone is dead and a lawsuit was lost, I contend that he is alive and the lawsuit was won. Hello. I have an image of the British composer Ernest Farrar that I would be quite like to upload onto the page, and I was just wondering what the position of copyright is. He was killed in action in World War 1, so presumably the image is now in the 'public domain'. However, I thought I ought to clarify whether this is the case before uploading it, as I don't want to create a problem. What would you recommend? Thank you for your welcome, by the way. Vanity

Some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Jason Ward-recording engineer/producer may not be sufficiently well-known to merit articles of their own. The Wikipedia community welcomes newcomers, and encourages them to become Wikipedians. On Wikipedia, each user is entitled to a user page in which they can describe themselves, and this article's content may be incorporated into that page. However, to merit inclusion in the encyclopedia proper, a subject must be notable. We encourage you to write or improve articles on notable subjects. -Mysekurity 01:10, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

Just asking...

I just made my own page in Wikipedia, a temporary replacement of the Sandbox for when it was down (now it's back up, go figure) called Temporary Sandbox. I didn't want to delete it because of the AfD message after I put in a {{hangon}}tab in. You can make your own sandbox to use at anytime you wish. Just make a page User:Eric55673/Sanbox, or whatever. That way you dont have to worry bout the other one goin down, and user pages are practilly invulnerable to deletes.  :) Joe I 00:56, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the comment on my signature. Square brackets are used around chemical formulas as a convenient way to indicate concentration in units of mol per litre. My signature, on the other hand, doesn't really need them anymore because some of the smart folks over at Esperanza figured out how to avoid confusion with the green e. Now, I've linked my green e to User:TantalumTelluride/Esperanza, which explains what the green e means and has links to both Esperanza and a number of my various user-space pages. I still changed the color of my signature to orange and blue. How do you like it? --TantalumTelluride 06:36, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Commemorative coins of the USSR

Hello! Thanks for your comment. Well, there are some pics of those coins in Wikipedia's Wikicommons: [5] (see "Anniversary coins" section there), although I think, most of the scans there are too dark.

Pictures of almost all coins (maybe except silver ones) are available through "external links" section of the article created by me. If you have difficulties navigating Russian language websites, here are direct links to gold coins' pics, here - to platinum coins' pics, here - to palladium coins' pics and here - to copper-nickel coins' pics. I don't know, which is their copyright status, but perhaps a couple of them could be uploaded at least under "fair use".

Personally, I have 12 copper-nickel coins: 1 ruble - Olympiad in Moscow Emblem (1977), 20th anniv. of Victory (1965), 30th anniv. of Victory (1975), 100th anniv. of Lenin (1970), 50 years of Soviet power (1965), Festival in Moscow (1985), Maxim Gorky (1988), Taras Shevchenko (1989), Gagarin (1981); 5 rubles - Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kiev (1988), 1000 years of Russia monument (1988), Monument to Peter the Great (1988). You can see, that first 5 of them already exist in "commons". When I have time, I'll scan the remaining 7 and probably do lighter scans of 5 existing ones.

I also have a great many of Soviet regular coins and some banknotes. Cmapm 23:23, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Request for edit summary

Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 36% for major edits and 99% for minor edits. (Based on the last 150 major and 150 minor edits in the article namespace.)

This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear impolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 00:00, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

I noticed that you've started tagging some articles. I got some time tonight, and updated my bot to tag articles. I'm testing it right now, so I'll be able to tag the articles easily soon (I'm going to take it slow with the bot until I'm sure it's working well and no one minds). So you don't need to spend your time on it (but thanks for all the work you've done so far). 24.206.178.76 03:30, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

I'm leaving this macrophage, a particularly hungry white blood cell on your talk page, I just finished a rewrite of its article and realized they're not so different from administrators, as they keep their surroundings clean, doing away with anything that's not supposed to be there...
Anyway, with that short lecture on cell biology done with, I'd like to thank you for your vote on my RfA, which passed with (49/2/0), I'll do my best to not let you down, and if you see me heading towards a common newbie mistake, please nudge me in the right direction :)

Numismatics Barnstar

New barnstar proposals have to be approved through Wikipedia:Barnstar and award proposals before they're accepted as official awards. Ironically, my past experience with the barnstar project hasn't left a good impression on me as far as civility and cooperation are concerned. They would probably dismiss a numismatics barnstar as too specific, although there really is no other barnstar that seems appropriate for the topic. I suppose we could propose a barnstar, and if it isn't approved, then we could sanction it through the Numismatics WikiProject or make it a personal user award. (I have a feeling that barnstar instruction creep is going to be the source of the next major conflict in the community. Remember what happened when people started applying too many rules to userboxes?) --TantalumTelluride 00:49, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Double Eagle

Joe-

That move was a while ago, but as I remember, I moved it because there is no such thing as a Double Eagle (that I know of) in any other context than a U.S. coin, therefore it did not need to be disambiguated with (U.S. coin) in the title. If it is widely agreed that the previous title was better, then by all means move it back; however, I was going for maximum simplicity. Regards, Paul 16:50, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Bot

It's working great for tagging articles in the simple case, and I think I got all articles that needed Numismaticnotice. I have to update it a bit to consider if the article already has Numismaticnotice and needs Exonumianotice. I also need to consider the categorization and maybe update it a bit so that orders and decorations are separate from awards (like movie awards). That in itself is not my idea of fun, and real life has gotten in the way recently, but I plan to get back to it soon. Thanks for the barnstar. Ingrid 23:50, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

A thank you and a question

Joe - Thanks for your welcome note. I am still learning my way around Wikipedia and have a question. An edit (one which I appreciate) was made to a page I like. The history section shows an IP address but no name. I am not sure how to find out who this person was or why the change was made. Can you point me at the appropriate resource place on Wikipedia? Thanks! Kris

Kris, if it just shows an IP, then the person does not have an account with wikipedia, or was not signed on. You can leave a message on their talk page, as is more than likely the same person will use the same IP time after time. You can check this page, hopefully it'll have more for ya. If you still need help, gimme the link of the diff page that has the IP users edit, and I'll see what can be done. Joe I 00:33, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

I saw you corrected the Portuguese de ouro (=of gold), to duro, which means hard in Portoguese. (see [7], [8] and [9]).

Gold in Portuguese is ouro.

Question about e-mail

Joe - How do I e-mail an author who is registered on the site, or is that possible? I posted my question on his talk page, but I was the first person there and don't know if s/he checks that page. Is there a way for me to send my comment directly? Kris

Sure, at the upper portion of pages on the left side, find the frame right under the search bar and above the interwiki language thingies. If their preferences setting to allow e-mail is on, then there will be a "E-mail this user" link. :) Joe I 17:50, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Numismatics

Howdy, I slightly lightened the text-colour in the portal box-headers. It's still quite hard to read though, I'd suggest changing it further (I don't know what to). Yellow is a very difficult colour for text to appear in. Those "edit" links look basically like splotches to me. Thanks :) --Quiddity 21:37, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

hey, yeah, I had tried a few greens, and other silvers and golds, but those were the best I could find. I was using them for the "silver" and "gold" reason, being what most coins are made of. But if you can think of something that would work better, lemme know.  :) Joe I 20:39, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Hey, that'd be cool if you listed Image:Demand Note$.jpg for a featured picture. I don't know if it would be "accepted" by the Wikipedia community at large, however. Oh, I also wanted to say thanks for the positive support for the original image. It really meant a lot to me, especially since I nearly had to go to war with that one user.

As far as FOUREFFIGIES.jpg is concerned, the only thing I can think of is if it is significantly artistically changed/rearranged, would that change its copyright status?

I notice you've done some maintenance/updating over at WP:Texas, which I've just discovered. I'm interested in maintaining it regularly (that is, at least take a *look* at it every day, but update it once a week or so with new news, "did you know"s, pictures, etc) if I can get someone else to go along too. Not sure how you popularize Portals, but it'd be nice to make it a really good resource that people know about..? I also recently started WikiProject Dallas though right now it's basically just a copy of WikiProject Texas before I get some time to do some heavy-duty work. I see your plate is pretty full with the things you contribute with.. I'm just hoping to get someone else to run with to keep things running smoothly. • The various talk page banners used by the project have been consolidated into the main {{WPMILHIST}} template, which now adds extra notices based on various parameters. The older templates are currently in the process of being replaced.
  • The old manually-maintained worklist has been replaced with a new system that allows article ratings to be provided directly on the associated talk pages, feeding an automatically generated list. Nearly two thousand articles have already been assessed, and many more still need a rating!
  • Five new task forces have been started: Chinese military history, French military history, Memorials and cemeteries, Weaponry, and World War I.
  • A new structure for the list of project members has been introduced; to save space and improve legibility, any member with no edits for at least three months will be moved to a separate list of inactive members.
