Schuessler (2007) minimally reconstructs Old Chinese *ʔə and suggests it is cognate with Proto-Hlai *ja¹ (medicine), Proto-Kam-Sui *gja² (medicine; to cure), Proto-Tai *ˀjɯəᴬ (medicine).
