Initial Results from an Applied Baccalaureate Program in Software Development

Abstract

Nearly half of the states in the U.S. now authorize community colleges to confer certain baccalaureate degrees, typically applied baccalaureate degrees that are workforce-oriented. Green River College, a community college located in a suburb 25 miles south of Seattle, Washington, launched a new applied baccalaureate program in Software Development in 2014, focused on preparing students, particularly those who are place-bound, underrepresented and under-served, to access entry-level career opportunities as software developers. This lightning talk will share initial results from a five-year retrospective on an applied baccalaureate program in Software Development and provides the authors an opportunity to ask for feedback from SIGITE community members on what other factors and data should be considered to provide additional value in the retrospective.
