Abstract
This study takes official tourism maps published by Tainan City as the research object. The research method adopts the general interview method, and the interviewees are map publishers (Tainan City Tourism Bureau) and map designers (illustrators). The purpose of this study is to explore the benefits to be achieved by official tourism map publishing, and the planning and considerations of illustrators when designing tourist maps.
Research findings (1) The purpose of publishing illustrated maps is to increase tourists’ interest in attractions, boost visitor numbers, increase visibility, and enhance attractiveness. Factors such as the selection of illustrators, whether their styles are suitable for the map’s theme, and their popularity are all considerations. The authorities hope to promote local illustrators in tourism marketing, so several maps are drawn by local illustrators from Tainan. As for how much illustrated tourist maps actually increase tourist numbers, the authorities lack statistical data to determine, but they do increase people’s willingness to collect them.
(2) Official emphasis is primarily on the accuracy of tourist maps’ information, especially the relative positions of attractions, with design aesthetics coming second. The attractions on illustrated maps are provided by the authorities, while the illustration style and color scheme are determined by the illustrators.
