Abstract
Systems of linear equations involving sparse, symmetric, positive definite coefficient matrices arise in many application areas. Our immediate interest in the solution of such systems has arisen from our use of the finite element displacement method for analyzing a wide variety of structures, and the need for automating the data generation for such analyses. Figure 1 shows a typical structure which has been modelled for analysis.
