Selene (Japanese: ミヅキ Mizuki) is the female player character in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon. Her male counterpart is Elio.

Terminology

Selene (Japanese: ミヅキ Mizuki) is the most commonly used name used for this character, including in promotional videos for Sun and Moon, in merchandise, and in the spin-off game Pokémon Masters EX. She is never directly named in the core series games or their manuals.

The promotional videos and officially supported material, such as guide books, also refer to the character as Moon (Japanese: ムーン Moon). Promotional videos and trailers for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon refer to her as Ailey (Japanese: コウミ Koumi).

The GoodSmile Company's page for the figma Selene figure lists the character as Mizuki instead, both in English and Japanese, but this is contradicted by the actual figure box and Pokémon Center's listing for the same product.

The game's internal data and English website simply refer to Selene as HEROINE or heroine.

In the core series games

Character profile

Selene is the female player character in Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and because of this, she acts in the role of a silent protagonist like most other player characters in the series. Despite this, she can still make player based decisions, in most cases this will offer unique dialogue with certain characters responding or reacting in certain ways depending on how they're chosen. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Rotom Pokédex will act differently depending on how Selene interacts with it.

As the player character, Selene will interact with most of the game's cast, forming friendships and experience as she travels through Alola on her island challenge. She forms friendly rivalries with Hau and Gladion, as well as a friendship with Lillie. Selene inspires Hau and Lillie to improve on themselves, due to her skill level and kindness with Pokémon.

Selene's known relatives include her mother, and her unnamed father.USUM Selene is native to the Kanto region and currently resides in Alola's Route 1 in the Hau'oli City Outskirts, with her mother and Meowth. Professor Kukui considers him and Lillie to be Selene's neighbor.[7]

Selene, along with her male counterpart, Elio, and Red, are the youngest core series protagonists with known ages at the time of being playable. Being at the age of eleven.

Appearance

Selene alongside her male counterpart, Elio, in concept art for Pokémon Sun and Moon

Selene is an 11-year-old girl who's appearance changes based on trainer customization. The player can choose between 4 different preset default appearances, chooseing between Selene's hair, eye and skin color. These defaults otherwise are identical. These default appearances change based on Sun and Moon or Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. In most media and her stock art, Selene uses the default second option to the left, having gray eyes and black hair with sideswept bangs.

Pokémon Sun and Moon

Selene's hair is styled as a black chin-length bob with sideswept bangs. These bangs flow down to her chin and go around her neck. Her head is covered by a red-colored knit hat that ends with a flower shape with 5 petals, called a Casual Cap. This hat has a square-shaped Poké Ball-like shape on the front. Selene has round eyes that rest right below her bangs, having gray irises and two eye lashes on each eye. Her thin eyebrows match the color of her hair.

Selene's beige Flower-Print Top has large, open sleeves and a circular neck hole. The bottom ends in a knot. Throughout the top, there is a pattern with several pink and yellow flowers with green leaves. Selene wears a gray sleeveless tank top underneath her shirt. She wears green Casual Shorts, having two side pockets and one back pocket, the pant legs end at her thighs. Her white Z-Ring goes around her left wrist, however in some concept art she wears a green, blue and pink threaded wristband instead. Her Trekking Shoes are primarily black, with red soles that reach up to the toes in a zig-zag pattern, offering the look of a Litten. These shoes go around her ankles with red cuffs. She has yellow shoe laces. Selene's default Nylon Shoulder bag has a long black should strap that goes around her left shoulder, hanging the back on her right. The bag itself is shaped like a watermelon slice and has a white back, with a red front cover. The sides are black with a yellow bottom. The red front is outlined with white, the upper portion being thicker and three white dots are spaced out evenly around the bottom resembling "seeds." Her trial amulet hangs on the front side of the should strap.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
Selene's concept art for Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Her hair is retained from Sun and Moon.

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Selene keeps her black hair and sideswept bangs, however she has it styled in braided tails instead, which fall over her shoulders. This hair style does not appear in her Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon concept art, however concept art illustrating this new hair style was publicly revealed. Her hat is replaced with a Vacation Hat, a large straw sun hat with a red hibiscus flower on the side of it tied together with a green ribbon. She wears an orange Vacation Top. This top goes around Selene's upper body with a singular white strap going around her neck. The hem is shaped like a flower with 8 petals sitting snug around her waist. The top itself has a red hibiscus flower pattern. Selene's white Vacation Shorts are puffy and end at her thighs, offering two pockets are are buttoned up at the front. Her Black Z-Power Ring goes around her left wrist. Her Vacation Sandals have black soles that go around her toes, with several white and green straps goign across her feet up past her ankles. Selene's Vacation Bag is similar to her Nylon Bag in Sun and Moon, having a long black should strap that goes around her left shoulder, hanging the back on her right. The bag itself is still shaped like a watermelon slice, however, this bag now has a pale yellow back and a yellow bottom, with the black remaining on the sides. The front has a darker yellow top and a paler yellow bottom, being separated by two yellow line strokes, resembling a Poké Ball. Once again, her trial amulet hangs on the front side of the strap.

Background and pre-game

Website blurb: "You will choose to be a hero or heroine in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, and you can name yourself whatever you'd like. The story begins right after your character has moved to the Alola region. No sooner have you arrived than your adventures begin to unfold, and you'll meet many people and Pokémon as you grow and learn."

Selene is an 11-year-old girl who recently moved from the Kanto region to Melemele Island in the Alola region. She moved to the region along with her mother. Selene appears exclusively as a player character.

Start of the island challenge

Selene begins her adventure when Professor Kukui asks to see her. After grabbing her bag and hat, she walks with the professor to Iki Town to receive her first partner Pokémon from the island's kahuna, Hala. Mistaking the young girl for the kahuna, she runs into Lillie, who's Cosmog, Nebby, has escaped her bag and gets attacked by wild Spearow on an unsteady plank bridge. She quickly protects the Pokémon despite not having one of her own. After the bridge collapses, the island's guardian deity, Tapu Koko, saves the two from falling. Selene quickly befriends Lillie and Nebby and the two proceed to walk back to Iki Town for Selene to choose her first Pokémon. After doing so, she gives the Sparkling Stone to Hala, receives a Pokédex from the professor, and meets Hau, a rival who she befriends and has battles with often. The following day, Professor Kukui teaches Selene how to become a proper Trainer. She battles Hau once again and is given a Z-Ring by Kahuna Hala, officially starting her island challenge. Professor Kukui then updates her Pokédex to the Rotom Pokédex with a Pokémon by the name of Rotom, who becomes a new friend and mentor for the young trainer. After Lillie and Kukui describe the functions of Rotom Dex, Hau comes into the Pokémon Research Lab and the three learn more about their island challenge. Selene then sets out to Alola's Trainers' School with Lillie, who helps helps care for and teach Selene about her Pokémon. Selene gets called to the principal's office (to which Lillie and Rotom jokingly tease her for) and graduates from the school. Selene begins Walking to Hau'oli City with her new friends, discussing island life and the upcoming city. As soon as they get to the new city, the three explore the island, and Hau drags Selene to the tourist bureau to upgrade Rotom Dex. After which, Selene takes a group picture with Hau and Lillie using the new function. While on her island challenge through Melemele, Selene runs into the troublesome Team Skull, a group of hooligans harassing people and interfering with the island life. She clears her first trial with Ilima and gets taught how to use Z-Moves from the professor. After finding Nebby who is lost in Melemele Meadow, Selene defeats Hala in her first grand trial and travels with Lillie, Hau and Kukui to the island of Akala to proceed her island challenge.

Trials on Akala Island

On Akala Island, Selene is asked by Lillie, who is currently staying at Heahea City, to help her finding more about and protecting Nebby. On her island challenge, Selene runs into another rival, Team Skull's Gladion, who seems to be berating Hau for how he battles and his strength. Selene defeats the Team Skull enforcer, and goes on with her island challenge, accomplishing Lana, Kiawe and Mallow's trials. Along the way, selene visits Royal Avenue, where she meets with Hapu, a young Pokémon Trainer going on a small journey herself and The Masked Royal, a masked wrestler who shows her how to perform in Battle Royals at the Battle Royal Dome, as well as Colress, a scientist, on Route 8. Selene makes her way back down to Heahea's Dimensional Research Lab ran by Kukui's wife, Professor Burnet to learn about her research on dimensions. Going through Diglett's Tunnel, Selene remeets with Kahuna Olivia who agrees to do a grand trial with Selene. During their travels on Route 9, they meet with Faba of the Aether Foundation, after helping the organization with a problem, asks to meet them at the Hano Grand Resort. Selene faces off against Olivia in a grand trial, with the nearby Lillie and Nebby enjoying the battle. Hau informs Selene about their meet with Faba, to which Lillie declines. Faba brings both Hau and Selene on a tour of Aether Paradise. There, the duo meets Wicke and the company's president, Lusamine, who explains her goals of protecting Pokémon. Selene protects Lusamine from a then unknown Pokémon called an Ultra Beast, reaching the artificial island through an Ultra Wormhole. Under the guidance of Wicke, they are sent to Ula'ula Island and regroup with Professor Kukui and Lillie after the dangerous events that took place.

Ula'ula Island

Selene continues her island challenge, she is informed by Lillie to visit the professor the Malie Garden and come back. Lillie requests help with research at the Malie Library. There, Selene meets with Hapu again and is given access to a book in the library by a Trial Captain, Acerola. After reading The Light of Alola, Selene rides the Exeggutor Express traveling up to Mount Hokulani's observatory and she learns from Professor Kukui about the now developing Pokémon League. Returning to Malie Garden, Selene runs into Guzma, Team Skull's Boss who thinks the Pokémon League and island challenge is unnecessary. Noticing her Z-Ring, Guzma picks a fight with Selene and shows him her strength. Selene regroups with Hau and travels down to Tapu Village to stay at Aether House. Along the way, they run into Gladion once more, who aggressively tells the two to protect Cosmog at all costs if they know anything about it. Lillie gets attacked by two Team Skull Grunts after breaking away from Acerola and Hapu, to which Selene jumps in and protects the lady. After finishing her sixth trial with Acerola, Selene sets out to Po Town, Team Skull's base, to rescue a Yungoos who was living at the orphanage. This turns out to be a scheme conducted by Team Skull's Admin Plumeria, who Selene has fought before, kidnapping Lillie and Nebby and brings them to Aether Paradise. Overhearing the conversation, Gladion forces Selene and Hau to come with him to the facility with certain that Lillie is there.

Rescue at Aether Paradise

The now hostile Aether Foundation attempts to prevent the group from finding out about information on Cosmog and Lillie. Selene goes to Aether's Secret Lab B, and learns more about Cosmog, it's origins, and professor Mohn. Regrouping with Hau and Gladion, Selene takes down Team Skull and rematching their leader once more before reaching the mansion where Lillie and Lusamine are kept. Selene finds out that the President of the Aether Foundation, is in fact the mother of both Lillie and Gladion; and has an obsession with Ultra Beasts. Lillie insists to her mother that Nebby will die if their power is misused. It is revealed Lusamine had ended up kidnapping Nebby, containing the Pokémon in a cage and been using its powers to unleash hordes of Ultra Beasts across the Alola region, ending with both her and Guzma traveling to Ultra Space after a battle. This process has caused Nebby to evolve into Cosmoem (although none of them seem to be aware of this). Under the guidance of Wicke, they stay at Aether Paradise for the night and the next day the group splits off, with Gladion giving Lillie the Moon FluteS/Sun FluteM.

Poni Island

With newfound courage, Selene and Lillie travel to Poni Island's Seafolk Village to search for a way to find Lusamine and save Nebby. The two meet up with Hapu for the third time, and brings them to the Ruins of Hope, watching her become the kahuna of Poni Island. Hapu tells them of a second flute, and a ritual to be performed on top of Poni's Altar. After a small journey through Exeggutor Island, Selene grabs the counterpart of Lillie's flute and is met with Plumeria and Team Skull at Ancient Poni Path, telling them to help Guzma. Selene finishes her last grand trial with Hapu, with the group of three proceeding through Vast Poni Canyon. At the end of the canyon, Selene completes the last of her seven trials, and is met with the Altar of the SunneS/Altar of the MooneM where she and Lillie perform a ritual that causes Nebby to evolve into the Legendary Pokémon from the book in Malie: SolgaleoS/LunalaM, who takes them to Ultra Space. Selene confronts and defeats Lusamine, who berates her for helping and befriending Lillie, and they're brought back to Alola by Nebby.

Ending

Selene and her friends

Nebby wishes to come with Selene and Lillie on more adventures, but Lillie insists on Selene catching Nebby, saying that she will be Nebby's mother now. Lillie says goodbye after Selene has caught Nebby. After catching Nebby, Selene is brought back to Tapu Village by Nanu and climbs to the summit of Mount Lanakila to take on Alola's newly established Pokémon League and Elite Four. Her strength is tested by both Hau and Gladion, with words of good luck from Lillie before hand. After defeating the Elite Four, Selene is challenged by one person, the League's founder, Professor Kukui, ending in a win for Selene who is then declared as the first-ever Champion of Alola. During the subsequent celebration in Iki Town, Lillie takes Selene to the Ruins of Conflict, where the newly crowned Champion faces Tapu Koko in battle in thanks for saving her and Nebby on Mahalo Trail. Lillie and Selene are then brought back to the festival and enjoy themselves. Lillie intends to tell Selene something, but gets stopped. The following day, Hau tells Selene of an emergency and that they need to go to the Marina in Hau'oli immediately. It turns out that Lillie is leaving Alola to go to Kanto, and Selene has to say goodbye. After seeing her friend leave, Professor Kukui brings Selene back home.

Selene appears in the credits on a photo on the end screen, a photo that she, Hau and Lillie all took at Hau'oli City from the start of their journey. This photo is a part of an animated sequence. This sequence has a package sitting next to Lillie's pink rucksack. The contents of this package include the photo (among many others) that Selene, Hau and Lillie took at Hau'oli City; Selene's trial amulet, and a letter to Lillie. A quote, "Everyone's smiles shine so brightly. Those smiles led us to so many other people. And those meetings will lead us to a bright future. I'm so glad I got to meet everyone. I'm so glad I got to meet you." is displayed over an image of Lillie and Nebby before this sequence, it can be assumed that she is either talking about the player or Nebby. It is implied that Selene had taken all the other pictures found in the package.

Post-game

At the start of the day, Hau informs Selene of his victory with Hala, and gives her the two remaining Z-Crystals of the first partner Pokémon. Selene is then contacted by Looker and Anabel of the International Police, who request her help in catching the Ultra Beasts unleashed into Alola due to Lusamine's actions. Selene agrees to this, successfully catching all the Ultra Beasts roaming around Alola. While learning about the Ultra Beasts, Selene soon finds out that she may be a Faller, a person who has gone through Ultra Wormholes and were bathed in tremendous amounts of Z-Power.

Selene eventually finds her way through the rest of Poni Island, gaining access to a Key Stone and Mega Evolution from a revisit with Dexio and Sina, who she has met in Heahea City. At the end of Poni Island, she encounters the Battle Tree and meets Red and Blue, the Battle Tree's Battle Legends.

At Aether Paradise, Selene meets up with Gladion, who is now the acting president of the Aether Foundation. Gladion thanks Selene for her help with his family, especially with Lillie, claiming that Lillie has never smiled so happily since she met Selene. Gladion rewards them with a Type: Null, and says he is looking forward to Alola's strong Champion.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

The story of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are simuilar to that of Sun and Moon, but has a drastic change in details, with the start being restructured and the events on Poni Island being recontextualized.

Background and pre-game

Selene is an 11-year-old girl who moved from Kanto to Alola with her mother. Sometime before her move to Alola, she has met Lt. Surge, the Gym Leader of Vermilion City, and got a signed Autograph from him. She put this autograph on a pedestal in her room. Her story in these games is very similar to that of Sun and Moon, however her interactions with other characters and events are different. Like in Sun and Moon, she is exclusively a playable character.

Start of the island challenge

Selene begins her adventure immediately after her arrival in Alola, being told to meet Professor Kukui on Alola's Route 1. She meets with the professor on her way to Iki Town and gets stopped by a wild Yungoos. At this point, three Pokémon, a Rowlet, Litten and Popplio appear to help the new Trainer out. Kukui allows Selene to pick one of these three to learn the basics of being a Trainer. After the commotion, the two leave to Iki Town, where she meets and befriends a young boy named Hau, who she will have rivalry with on their journey. The two begin a battle, the first of many, followed by Kukui asking Selene to go find the island kahuna. Selene then finds a mysterious young girl, Lillie and mistakes her for the kahuna. Lillie appears to be struggling to get across a plank bridge due to a fear of heights, and her Cosmog, Nebby, has escaped her bag. Nebby gets attacked by wild Spearow on the unsteady plank bridge. Selene quickly protects the Pokémon and battles one of the Spearow with her newly obtained first partner Pokémon. Nebby uses its power and causes the bridge to collapse while in Selene's grasp, and causes them to fall. The island's guardian deity, Tapu Koko, saves both Selene and Nebby, placing them back down in front of Lillie and providing Selene with a Sparkling Stone. Selene quickly befriends Lillie and Nebby and the two proceed to walk back to Iki Town. After doing so, she gives the Sparkling Stone to Hala, and receives a Pokédex from the professor. The following day, Professor Kukui teaches Selene how to become a proper Trainer, battling other Trainers on their way back to Iki Town. She battles Hau once again and is given a Z-Power Ring by Kahuna Hala, officially starting her island challenge.

During her travels, Selene encounters a group of strange pale people known as the Ultra Recon Squad, who are later revealed to be working with the Aether Foundation. When Lillie and Nebby are kidnapped, Selene follows them and finds out that Lillie's mother Lusamine is seeking to travel to Ultra Recon Squad's home world to stop a Pokémon known as Necrozma before it can threaten Alola. She successfully uses Nebby's powers to travel to this alternate world, leaving Lillie and Selene to figure out how to follow her. They travel to Poni Island and perform a ritual that causes Nebby to evolve into the Legendary Pokémon SolgaleoUS or LunalaUM. However, before Selene and Lillie can go after Lusamine, she's suddenly thrown out of an Ultra Wormhole before them, followed by Necrozma. Necrozma proceeds to battle and absorb Nebby, before traveling back to Ultra Space. With the Ultra Recon Squad's help, Selene travels to their home world of Ultra Megalopolis, where she defeats Necrozma once again and saves Nebby.

After completing her last island challenge trial, Selene climbs Mount Lanakila to reach the newly established Pokémon League at its summit, re-encountering Necrozma along the way. After Selene has defeated the brand-new Alola Elite Four, Professor Kukui arrives and presents Hau as her final challenge before she can claim the championship. Selene successfully defeats Hau one last time, making her the first Champion of Alola.

Later, Selene assists the Ultra Recon Squad in catching some Ultra Beasts roaming around Poni Island. But no sooner has she returned home that she learns of an evil organization called Team Rainbow Rocket appearing in the region. The team takes over Aether Paradise, sets up their base on it, and kidnaps Lusamine. Selene storms the base and takes down the members of Team Rainbow Rocket, including their leader, Giovanni, saving Lusamine and making Team Rainbow Rocket leave Alola.

Pokémon

As the player character, Selene can have up to all 802SM/807USUM Pokémon available in the Alola games. She makes no NPC roles.

Due to being the player character, Selene is required to pick between Rowlet, Litten and Popplio as her first partner Pokémon in both Sun and Moon and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. In the Sun and Moon titles, Selene is required to capture Nebby at Poni's altar. A battle against a wild Alolan Exeggutor on Exeggutor Island is required to be fought in the plot but is not required to be captured. In Sun and Moon, Selene is also required to take part in battle against Tapu Koko, and while not required to be caught, Lillie will offer unique dialogue upon capturing. In Sun and Moon's post-game, Selene is tasked to capture 5 of the 7 Ultra Beasts that appear.

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Lillie and Nebby will appear on Mahalo Trail after the player meets with Ilima at Hau'oli Cemetery. If the event is activated, Nebby as either SolgaleoUS or LunalaUM will be fought and required to be caught. On Exeggutor Island, she is instead tasked to battle three wild Pinsir instead, rather than a single Exeggutor. In the post-game, Selene will be required to battle two BlacephalonUS or StakatakaUM after being requested to by the Ultra Recon Squad, although they do not need to be caught.

Reason: Pokemon Time merch

Selene has been found in multiple pieces of merchandise including being involved within merchandise lines. Selene, along with Acerola and Lillie is a part of the Pokémon Time merchandise line, being features in plush dolls and figurines. In 2018, Selene was released as a figma figurine, produced by The GoodSmile Company. figma Selene was released on The GoodSmile Company's own website, being listed as figma Mizuki, and on the Pokémon Center, under figma Selene, each having their own pre-order bonuses. The Lively Lillie Figma released soon after, containing extra parts and matching poses to go along with Selene. Selene got her own ArtFX J statue, with Rowlet produced by Kotobukiya. Matching artwork illustrated by Hitoshi Ariga was included as key art. The ArtFX J figurine was never released internationally, however, the Rowlet that released with the Selene statue was and released alongside the Lively Lillie statue, also produced by Kotobukiya, as a pre-order bonus on the Pokémon Center website.

Below is a list of non-TCG related products that Selene, or her Pokémon has been featured on.
