What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
1. Bring the Troops home from Afghanistan. 2. Make College more affordable 3. Abolish ICE
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I spent five years, working as an Assistant District Attorney, in Brooklyn's special victim's bureau. I protected women and men who were the victims of sex crimes and domestic violence. I also spent twelve years as volunteer firefighter/EMT. If elected, I will become the first 9/11 firefighter elected to Congress. I will also become the first openly gay person to represent New York City in Congress.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
I admired former Governor Mario Cuomo, when I was a boy. He made me proud to be a New Yorker and he inspired me to run for office one day.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
An elected official should do the right thing - even if it means he (or she) stands alone.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I have great empathy for people who are doggedly struggling to make it into the middle class- because I will always remember how tough that journey can be.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Our elected officials should remind New Yorkers that we live in the most amazing place in the country.
What legacy would you like to leave?
I hope that one day people will say "Michael Weinstock was an honest guy and he worked really hard to make New York a better place. And he was sometimes funny."
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I worked in a deli in Great Neck. It was my job to clean the smoked whitefish and keep the kitchen tidy. My fingers would smell of whitefish for days - no matter how much time I spent scrubbing them clean.
What happened on your most awkward date?
My fingers smelled of white fish.
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
When I was growing up, my mother was an alcoholic. She started drinking vodka very early in the morning and she would become angry and abusive in the evenings. Our apartment became increasingly filthy as her condition worsened. It was a nightmare that continued for days and months and years.
