Leonard Burke Sand was a federal judge with the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter.[1]

Education

Sand graduated from the New York University School of Commerce with his bachelor's degree in 1947 and graduated from Harvard Law School with his LL.B degree in 1951.[1]

Military service

Sand served as a United States Naval Reserve Ensign from 1951 to 1953.[1]

Sand was nominated by Jimmy Carter on April 7, 1978, to a seat vacated by Charles Metzner. Sand was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 17, 1978, and received commission on May 19, 1978. Sand later assumed senior status on July 1, 1993, and served until his death on December 3, 2016. Sand was succeeded in this position by Barrington Parker.[1]
