Perfect Trip?
I have an issue where my primary interests (remote hiking/travel) meet my primary phobias (physical danger/Covid). Help me plan a trip! [more inside]
A “hike from place to place” vacation?
Have you had a no-camping casual hiking trip? Tell me about it! [more inside]
Jungle Vision
So, I am going for a multi-day hike in the jungle/rainforest with a guide . What practices can *I* use to i) spot wildlife and ii) learn to pay attention to notice details. Additional difficulties: the visual field/detail can be overwhelming, and I'm likely to be tired from hiking. Assume all hours of the day (dawn to dusk)!

WHY NOT BOTH FILTER: Is there a sneaker that's ALSO a good hiker?
So I got the biggest and best hiking boots you can get. Great. Amazing. But they're huge and heavy. And I'm a nomad. So what I need is something that does like 60-80% of that BUT which I can also go for a run in. Does such a shoe exist?
How to prepare myself physically for a road trip vacation to Colorado
The last time I went to Colorado for a vacation, I had horrible headaches from the altitude. This summer we're going again and I’d like to avoid those if there’s a way to do that. I would also like to have more athletic stamina for hiking at a high elevation.
So I have a two-part question: what can I do now to prepare myself so that I minimize headaches from the altitude and that I’ll be ready to hike? We live at 500’, and we are staying in an area of Colorado around 9000’. [more inside]
Walk or run tracker like Garmin’s
My friend has a garmin gps that gives him really nice map pictures showing the speed along the route as red-orange-yellow-green. I would like the same effect on my iPhone for free. TIA!
Twin Cities Forest Picnic
For Thanksgiving, my little family wants to have a picnic in a pine forest. But which one? Can you recommend a place within 90 minutes of the Twin Cities that has a pine forest where we can lay our blankets on a bed of pine needles? Bonus points for: not crowded, not a 5 mile hike from the car with picnic, and postprandial pretty hiking options.
Best Berkshire country walks

rural hikes in LA
Asking for someone stuck in a small studio, studying hard, newly living near UCLA Medical Center, who'd benefit from nature:
Where to go, not too far driving from UCLA, to get a hike for a mile or a few miles?
Preferably it would be off pavement (trail ok) and preferably wooded so having some shade; ideally, unspoiled forest bathing.
(I was wonderfully fortunate to hike in the coastal redwoods this morning, sparking this question)
Portland-centered crappy-road daytrips* for fall and winter
About 6 months ago I bought a new Crosstrek. I would like to make sure I am getting out and doing enough with it to make it worth it. [more inside]
West Virginia nature places, things to see and local music
We have a summer wedding in Maryland. We are thinking of vacationing in West Virginia state for a few days. Can you suggest best nature places to visit, places to hike, best things to see, and maybe local music we can take in. Thanks as always.

Travel holiday ideas - physical activity, in the month of July...?
Any suggestions for a hike/walk holiday that would be more than a week, but not 2 weeks (!) and something that would be interesting, outside the U.S, yet not over the top expensive? Any tour companies would be helpful, or lesser known but more interesting hikes. Looking at July which also seems to be a problem since that tends to be peak travel season. [more inside]
Looking for a great post-Thanksgiving hike around(ish) Portland, OR
Due to the fires a lot of my go-tos in the Gorge are closed. I'm okay with rainy hikes and driving up to a couple of hours, and am not too concerned with hike difficulty (easy is fine, tough is fine). It'll be late November -- what're some trails that have something unique to offer this time of year?
Mom Nature sabotaged our vacation! Now what?
[Coastal PNW filter] Lesson learned: Never plan for 10 days of camping, hiking and mountain biking in August. Vacation starts tomorrow. Wildfires, unhealthy air quality and high temps have foiled plans for the Cascade Loop. Fleeing toward the coast and south—except Oregon's on fire too!—where to? [more inside]

What was this Seattle area hike?

Who is the John Muir of New Hampshire's White Mountains?
I've recently started reading John Muir's My First summer in the Sierra and it is riveting stuff, a love-letter to an entire landscape that resonates with the bedrock of my soul. However, right now my heart belongs to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, rather than the Sierra Nevada of California. What writings, by what authors, are the closest equivalent to John Muir's work, but set in the Whites?

Lightweight, luxury, consumables for a hiker?
You've been hiking for 2 months and this is only the beginning. Internet service is intermittent, but not uncommon. You reach a town and pick up your resupply box from the post office. Inside are the essential vitamins, energy bars, crackers, and sriracha packets you loaded it with. The person who mailed the box added something extra that brightens your day. What is it? Backpack recommendations for the thoroughly confused

Help me get some forest time!

Best tent, backpack, sleeping bag for moderate weather?
I'm hiking out into the wild with a friend this autumn, and it's been decades since I last bought gear. I need a two-man tent, sleeping bag, backpack and other stuff. This won't be extreme camping, around 35-55°F at night, 3-4 days max. I'm looking for lightweight, durable, comfortable. Suggestions?
Day trip near Marco Island
I'll be staying on Marco Island in Southwest Florida in a couple weeks. Although lounging around on the beach doing nothing is definitely a priority, I would like to find one outdoorsy day trip. Looking for something I can complete, including transportation to and from, in 10 hours or less. Could be kayaking, hiking or biking (I am not an experienced mountain biker or kayaker, but would be into trying anything basic, especially if rental equipment is easily obtained). [more inside]
Day trips and hikes in and around Sydney & Melbourne?
Next week I am visiting Australia for the first time. Flying in to Sydney, spending a week there with relatives in Merrylands, then two weeks with relatives in Melbourne (Braybrook) and then another week in Sydney.
I want to know what is the best way to spend my time given that I am primarily interested in nature and day hikes, so the most pressing question is really 'What are the best day trips and hikes within a two-hour radius of Sydney and Melbourne?'

Alternatives to the Inca Trail
I would like to take about a week-and-a-half-long trip in late May / early June of 2014. I originally wanted to go to Machu Picchu to hike the Inca Trail. However, after some research, I'm not sure if it's the best option for me. [more inside]

Brunch and a hike within an hour of Washington, DC?
My wife and I would like to spend a nice Saturday going for a hike with our dog (nothing too taxing - we want to enjoy the outdoors, not get a workout) and also go for brunch in a charming small town nearby. We live in DC and would prefer not to drive more than an hour each way to get there.
Any suggestions??

Overnight dog friendly hiking trip?
Where can myself, a friend, and our dogs go for a sweet overnight trip near LA next week? We'd like to do some hiking and some casual beer drinking, and we'd like to be able to get a cheap hotel room and not drive more than 3 hours or so. Also, although we're both in good shape, his dog is 12 years old and mine is a wimpy shih tzu so the hike should be fairly easy and would ideally have some access to water. I think it's too cold to camp, but if there's somewhere warmish we're open to that. Lay it on me, mefi!
Are there any great, multi-day, non-wilderness walks in the U.S.?
Are there any great mixed rural/small-town/semi-urban long walks in the U.S.? I'm searching for multi-day, maybe even multi-week routes that are not strict backpacking and would not require the carrying of a tent. More inside. [more inside]
Low impact 10 day loop hike in lower 48?
My brother and I are contemplating a week to 10-day long loop ultralight hike. Ideally, it would be somewhere in the lower-48 states, and be casual, but NO mountains, so suggestions like the Appalachian or the PCT are out. It doesn't have to be wilderness, but ideally, we'd be camping all the way.
