Train from Dublin to Galway options
We're planning on traveling from Dublin to Galway mid-week, closest station looks like Pearse but it also seems that Heuston is the major station we're doing the bulk of the ride from. https://www.irishrail.ie isn't letting me book Pearse -> Ceannt, and some bus/local rail connections look a little tight. What's the best way to do this? [more inside]

Optimizing my once-in-a-lifetime Amtrak sleeper tour of the USA
In a few days I’m leaving for a 7-day Amtrak Vacations trip around the US from Washington DC to Chicago, LA, New Orleans, and back to Washington DC. I'd love any advice, recommendations, and suggestions on how to ensure I get the most out of my dream vacation. [more inside]
Best way to get from CDG to New Hotel Saint Lazare?
Hi, I need to get from Charles de Gaulle to New Hotel Saint Lazare in Paris, next Monday around 18:30. My French is très so-so and I have mobility issues (it's painful for me to walk long distances or stand for more than a few minutes at a time). A pre-ordered Uber is like €100, and the better-rated pre-booked airport taxis are even more. Cheaper airport taxis (e.g., G7, Alpha taxis, around €65) are rated very low on Google. What do you think my best option is?
What movie am I thinking of?
About 10 or 20 years ago, I saw a trailer for an intriguing movie. Here's what I remember: A troupe of Shakespearean actors is stranded in a remote location when their train breaks down. I think they were somewhere in Australia. [more inside]

Union Station (DC) overnight?

best way to travel from Europe to UK (near Manchester) with two people?
Looking for recommendations for two people to travel from continental Europe to a conference center near Manchester in the UK, with a good balance between sustainability, convenience and cost. We'll be traveling in the middle of May. We've already found some options, but there might be deals that we're simply not aware of or routes we haven't considered. [more inside]

Train-ing Raleigh to Hartford, current Amtrak bike policies?
I'm travelling from Raleigh to Hartford on multiple lines next week and would like to bring my bike. I don't want to box it up. I found some old AskMes about checking bikes on Amtrak, the couple of people I've asked say it depends on the line. But I can't find line-specific policy on the site. Just multiple policies stating that checking and carrying on is possible, depending on the line.
Is there anywhere online that has documented this or is there a best approach to verify?

Philly to Chicago by train?

West Coast Amtrak - the start of a beautiful vacation?
Thinking about starting out our vacation trip to Spokane Washington by taking Amtrak - the Coast Starlight from the Bay Area to Portland and then the Empire Builder from Portland to Spokane. Would that be a great way to start a vacation or would it be exhausting, uncomfortable and expensive? [more inside]
Detroit to Toronto -- would you take the bus or the train?
Research says I can take a Trailways or Flix bus directly from downtown Detroit, including the border crossing, but the bus doesn't get into Toronto 'til ~9pm. Alternatively, I could take the VIA train from Windsor for a 6pm arrival. That timing is ideal, but getting to the train station in Windsor from Detroit is a bit annoying. [more inside]

How to frame a 17 foot subway blind?
I'm a huge subway aficionado, and I am strongly considering buying for myself a Toronto subway blind (link) which was previously used on TTC trains to show the final stop of a subway. Unfortunately it's 17ft long, and my ceiling is nowhere near that tall. How can I display it? [more inside]

Royal Scotsman train advice
My partner and I are planning to head to Scotland for our honeymoon at some point and we love the idea of riding the Royal Scotsman. I'm curious if anyone has anything to share or advise on this, be it which tour to take, timing, or setting expectations. To be clear at the outset we know it is expensive! [more inside]
Recognize this electric, pedal-assisted train concept?
This illustration of the concept for an electric, pedal-assisted train concept hangs at the delightfully quirky Madsonian Museum of Industrial Design in Waitsfield, Vermont.
It's a concept for an "electric, pedal-assisted train," apparently part of a scheme called Transit Lite. I can find absolutely no other information about this anywhere, and my curiosity is piqued. The illustration looks like it dates to the 80s.
"STJ+LC" is written on the side, a reference to Vermont's St. Johnsbury and Lamoille County Railroad, but may have been a later addition to the illustration.
Anyone know anything more?
Piccolo Animale
In 1993 my family took a train trip in Tuscany, either from Florence to/from San Gimignano or Florence to/from Venice. My father, speaking no Italian accidentally bought two tickets for small animals on the trip instead of his two children. Can you help me figure out if he overpaid or underpaid? [more inside]

What is this sound?
I’m looking for the tch-tch sound an intercom makes when it’s shut off after someone makes an announcement. I associate this sound with the PA system on Amtrak trains. I’ve listened to a bunch of YouTube videos of ambient train noise and have not been able to locate it. Does this sound have a name? If so, what is it and where can I find a recording of it?
Best (UK) lard to give as a present
I am visiting a kind and generous friend in a few days time. For reasons, I have decided to take a present of lard. I am currently in a rural town in Worcestershire, and my options are Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Marks and Spencers, and Waitrose. There may also be some independent shops. Which lard is the best lard (my friend is a baker of many things)? It's also got to travel on trains of uncertain temperature for a while, if that is a factor.

Best Driver's Eye View video journeys?
I am looking to compile a long youtube playlist of driver's eye view videos, or other videos that scratch the same itch. I've been watching a lot of train journey videos and find it relaxing to have these playing throughout the day silently in the backround on my tv. I am looking for recommendations for train journey or other types of driver's eye view videos (hiking? boats? car drives?). Or even ideas on what search terms I could use to find these videos more easily?

Is an hour long enough to tour Manhatten?
I will have a 5 hour stopover in Newark Airport (EWR) this Friday, Dec 27, from 3pm to 8pm, with two kids (11 and 13) in tow. I want to surprise them with a whirlwind experience in Manhattan at Christmas time so they can see how spontaneous and carefree I am. I am neither carefree or spontaneous. Is this possible in reality and do you have any tips? [more inside]

Out of London Adventure...Along This One Train Line
Due to a poor mix of research, ambition, and logistics, my mom and I have train tickets between London and Oxenholme (and back) next Tuesday. I hoped to see the Lake District, but we'll only have about 3 hours between arrival and departure in Oxenholme. Any thoughts on how to best use our time out of London (vacationing from the US)? Let's just take the train somewhere
What are some fun day trips from Union Station in Washington DC by train? For the purposes of this question, I'm defining a "day trip" as three hours each way or less. I'm deliberately leaving this question open-ended, so just let me know why the place you have in mind makes such a fun day trip!
Need your tips on ambidextrousness (Broken Elbow Edition)
I'd like to train my non-dominant left hand be more dexterous *sigh* and strong over the next few weeks as I deal with a restrained right arm and hand. Public transport in Spain
We're taking our 18-year old nephew to Spain in September, staying in Cadiz, then one night each Gibraltar and Tangier. We'd like to travel between Cadiz, Gibraltar and Tarifa on buses or trains. I've been doing some research, and it seems like the buses to and from Gibraltar take just under two hours each. Is there an easier way to do this, maybe by going to La Linea de la Concepcion in Spain? Thanks for your help! (FYI, not looking to change our itinerary, just want suggestions on how best to do it. Very happy for suggestions on what to do in each place.)

Design our visit to the Loire
My husband and I are going on a long-awaited trip to Paris, with a couple of nights in the Loire at the end. Our Paris planning is on track, but in the Loire, we're stymied by the chicken-and-egg of where to stay, how to get around, and where to go. We'd like to visit the Château de Chenonceau, and we'd like to take an easy, ~1-3 hour paddle in kayaks or a canoe. We'd rather not rent a car if we can avoid it. Can you help us figure this out?
