Train from Dublin to Galway options

We're planning on traveling from Dublin to Galway mid-week, closest station looks like Pearse but it also seems that Heuston is the major station we're doing the bulk of the ride from. https://www.irishrail.ie isn't letting me book Pearse -> Ceannt, and some bus/local rail connections look a little tight. What's the best way to do this? [more inside]

best way to travel from Europe to UK (near Manchester) with two people?

Looking for recommendations for two people to travel from continental Europe to a conference center near Manchester in the UK, with a good balance between sustainability, convenience and cost. We'll be traveling in the middle of May. We've already found some options, but there might be deals that we're simply not aware of or routes we haven't considered. [more inside]

Train-ing Raleigh to Hartford, current Amtrak bike policies?

I'm travelling from Raleigh to Hartford on multiple lines next week and would like to bring my bike. I don't want to box it up. I found some old AskMes about checking bikes on Amtrak, the couple of people I've asked say it depends on the line. But I can't find line-specific policy on the site. Just multiple policies stating that checking and carrying on is possible, depending on the line. Is there anywhere online that has documented this or is there a best approach to verify?

West Coast Amtrak - the start of a beautiful vacation?

Recognize this electric, pedal-assisted train concept?

This illustration of the concept for an electric, pedal-assisted train concept hangs at the delightfully quirky Madsonian Museum of Industrial Design in Waitsfield, Vermont. It's a concept for an "electric, pedal-assisted train," apparently part of a scheme called Transit Lite. I can find absolutely no other information about this anywhere, and my curiosity is piqued. The illustration looks like it dates to the 80s. "STJ+LC" is written on the side, a reference to Vermont's St. Johnsbury and Lamoille County Railroad, but may have been a later addition to the illustration. Anyone know anything more?

Long Island City Long Island Rail Road

I commute against the grain in the morning, eastward from Long Island City (Queens) to Long Island. It's not a common morning commute so the LIRR trains don't bother stopping in Long Island City as it makes its way from Penn Station to Woodside and beyond. However, many thousands of upscale apartments are being built in LIC as it transforms into industrial-chic neighborhood a la Greenpoint. What are the odds, then, that the eastbound LIRR trains begin stopping at LIC stops in the morning? Any insights you provide will be part of the math as I decide whether to buy a car. If LIRR stopped in LIC in morning, I wouldn't need car. (I know I can pick up eastbound in Woodside. I'm familiar with the options.)

Relative Amtrak newbies have some West Coast itinerary questions

Later this month, we're taking our first long-distance train trip, on the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Los Angeles! We gather that delays can be part of the Amtrak experience. We're considering heading immediately to Anaheim to hit Disneyland first thing the next morning. Is it reasonable to plan to catch a connecting train, or should we make other plans? We don't particularly want to rent a car or be stranded. Schedules/details within. [more inside]

TGV train seating during the strike

Hi everyone. My wife and I are traveling from Paris to Lyon on the TGV Monday. Our train has apparently been cancelled, but I've been told by SNCF that I can board any TGV that's running that day, with the caveat that there's no guaranteed seating. When I board, are the reserved seats clearly marked, so that I'll know where the free seats are? I've only ever taken the TGV during regular conditions, so this is all very new to me. Thanks all.

CT to NYC on Metro-North: Where to park?

I'll soon have to travel semi-frequently from Hartford to NYC for work stuff, at both peak and off-peak times. I'm guessing the best option is to park-and-ride at some station along the Metro North line, but where should I park? This AskMe said Bridgeport Station is the best option, but that was almost six years ago - has anything changed? Would a station in New York state proper be better - Port Chester, etc? I'll also have to travel pretty late some nights in case that makes a difference.

Least inconvenient way to get into NYC if a car has to be parked somewhere

A friend and I are heading into NYC next weekend. We are coming from Montreal and driving across the border. However, after that, we haven't decided the best way to get into the city.
