Citizens Academy

St. Mary's County Government's (SMCG) Citizens Academy provides participants with the opportunity to learn more about county government programs and services. The academy includes 8 classes over a 10-week period, beginning September 3 and ending November 5, 2024. Week 9 offers optional attendance (in-person or virtual) to the Commissioner's quarterly public forum. Advance registration is required, and classes are limited to 25 participants.

Participants learn about County Administration, Aging & Human Services, Economic Development, Land Use & Growth Management, Recreation & Parks, Public Works & Transportation, Emergency Services, and about county government partner organizations, including the St. Mary's County Health Department, St. Mary's County Libraries, MetCom, the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Social Services.

Who can attend/participate?

Citizens Academy is open to St. Mary's County residents, 18 years of age and older. To participate, interested individuals must register in advance, as classes are limited to 25.

How do I register?

Complete and submit your registration here, online. If you are having issues with the online registration form, call the Public Information Office at (301) 475-4200 ext. 1340 for assistance. Once the class is filled, registration will be closed.

Citizens Academy sessions are held Tuesday evenings from 6 – 9 p.m. at designated locations. View all 2024 locations.

What's earned at the conclusion?

Participants receive a certificate of completion and are recognized by the Commissioners of St. Mary's County upon completion of Citizen's Academy.
