Talking Travel with Tom Turcich

My latest Talking Travel interview was with Tom Turcich, one of only 10 people reported to have walked around the world. He just released his book, The World Walk, and he gave me a preview of it.
Inspired by tragedy, Turcich decided to walk the world. After years of planning and saving, he did just that. It's an incredible story. Our interview is just a brief look at his fantastic story, but his book The World Walk is a great dive into his trek.
Additionally, he has another book series dedicated to Savannah, a pup he adopted in Texas on his walk. Savannah passed earlier this year, but her memory lives on through Savannah's World of Adventure book series. Turcich aims to teach youngsters about lesser-known locations through this book series.
Watch our interview at Talking Travel with Tom Turcich. Also, please subscribe to the Global Traveler YouTube channel. It's free, easy and you won't be bothered by emails etc. Also, go to tomturcich.com for more info on him.

On the Beat with Joey Roth

I have interviewed Joey Roth several times, but never like this. I have never even seen Joey like this.

Trouble had been brewing within the World Famous Fabulous Idols at Rocket Pro Wrestling. Things erupted at the October show, when he was attacked by the other idols with wife Roxi leading the charge.

I'm not going to lie and say it's all real. That's not the point. Wrestling fans (well, most wrestling fans) are aware of storylines. The beauty of great wrestling is multi-layered storylines developing over a period of time. The best storylines keep fans guessing.

This is where the current Joey situation is shining. While I saw a break coming within the Idols, I had no idea how it would go and where it would lead. Now we get to see it played out.

Where does Joey go from here? Who aligns with Joey, if anyone does? Does Joey bring in someone new? Of course, there's also the possibility this is one huge swerve. You just never know.

Things will unfold at the Christmas Chaos show December 7, but I am sure the story won't end there. Like a good television show, you'll have to keep tuning in.

This is one story worth watching. I know Joey well, but I have no inside info. I'm waiting and watching like everyone else.

Our interview can be found at On the Beat with Joey Roth, with the full story on the Joliet Patch. Also, check out rocketprowrestling.com for info and scheduling on all events.

Friend Encounters: Dylan Baker and Troy G.

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends meeting celebrities.

Big Slick Celebrity Weekend in Kansas City is a charity softball event featuring many athletes and celebrities. Last year, Troy attended, making me even more envious of my pal.

Troy is a media guy from The Geary Stein & Stevens Show, among other endeavors. Actually, Troy is all over the place, covering big events and meeting celebrities. Big Slick is just one of those events, although it is a big one.

Held in Kansas City, it attracts many celebrities from all areas and entertainment fields. Actor Dylan Baker was just one of the dozens who appeared this year.

Stemming from an idea developed by Rob Riggle, Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis in 2010, Big Slick debuted several weeks later. Over the years, it raised millions of dollars for Children's Mercy. While it is a fun event, the cause is a serious one. I applaud all involved.

For more info, check BigSlickKC.org. Check back here for my updates.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #715 Gabby Farrell & Meagan Jacobson

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a weekly series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing jerseys.

California native Gabby Farrell graduated from California State University and worked for the Los Angeles Kings for several years. Farrell worked on the street team and ice crew, then became Hockey Development Coordinator and Rink Account Executive. For her Celebrity Jersey Card, Farrell naturally wore a Kings jersey. The only thing better would be if it was old school Kings royal blue.

Meagan Jacobson is a UC Davis Animal Science Grad, who was on the Los Angeles Kings ice crew, before eventually becoming a gemologist. I couldn't find much else on Jacobson, but she looks like a gem on her Celebrity Jersey Card.

Cards That Never Were: Carlos Brown Topps 1976

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets. It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts. More of my creations and many great creations of others can be found in the Custom Baseball Cards Facebook group (and not just baseball cards).
After a successful career at Pacific, quarterback Carlos Brown was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 12th round of the 1975 NFL draft. Brown went on to play two seasons for the Packers, starting three games. He completed 29 of 78 passes for 37.2% for 396 yards, with three TDs and six INTs.
After a brief break from football, Brown returned to football with the British Columbia Lions, where be backed up Jerry Tagge, a QB who played for the Packers slightly before Brown.
Born Carlos Alan Awtry, he ventured to Hollywood and has carved out an acting career. He co-starred on tv's In the Heat of the Night for many years.
For his efforts, Brown received one card from Topps, a 1978 issue which would be his "career capper" card. I had to correct the omission and give him a ;76 card. I like that it shows him as a holder for kicker Chester Marcol. That's the perfect card for a backup QB.

Mrs. Al Snow at Blizzard Brawl 2021

Probably the best part of seeing Al Snow at various wrestling events or conventions is seeing his lovely wife Jessica. Although Al loves giving me a hard time, I am quite sure he would agree with me on that.
Jessica accompanies Al at many events, although surprisingly, many people don't even realize who she is. Furthermore, they probably don't know she is a licensed massage therapist.
I couldn't even tell you when I first met Jessica or realized who she was. If I had to guess, it was at a comic con, when Al delivered one of his worked punches for our picture. Those cracked him up even more than they made me laugh. He probably proudly showed her and she most likely laughed a bit part genuine, part politeness LOL).
Jessica is a real sweetheart. (Okay, usually she is, although there was that one time when she turned heel on me...all in fun). She's quick with a smile, hug and even a fun jab.
They seem very happy and very good for each other. Of course, Al needs all the help he can get and Jessica is a very giving person.
Seriously, they are two awesome people. If you see them at any convention, be sure to say hello to Jessica, too.
Meanwhile, Al is busy running Ohio Valley Wrestling. He has turned it into a real player on the wrestling scene. While it isn't ready to challenge the WWE, it is probably the current most popular company out there and it is because of Al's hard work.
For more info on Al's work, go to OVWrestling.com. You should also check Wrestlers on Netflix and Al's comedy tour with my buddy David Vox Mullen. Also, go to GLCWWrestling.com for info on Blizzard Brawl running December 7.

Tom Richmond at C2E2 2019

I meet a lot of creators of all sorts at comic cons. Tom Richmond is one I followed long before meeting him for the first time.
Tom's work with Mad Magazine is legendary. I can't say I grew up enjoying Tom's work, as he is only a tad older than me, but I have loved his work in my adult years.
I met Tom more than a decade ago and always stop by his booth at any comic con where he appears. I could sit there for hours watching him draw, although that wouldn't be good for his business. That talent amazes me.
After a few years, I finally realized I could have Tom do his version of the Johngy character. What took me so long? In any case, I loved his version. How cool is it to have a drawing from the man who has created so much fun stuff for Mad and elsewhere.

That artwork is now available on a Johngy's Beat shirt at rpowrestlingtees.com. Thank you to Tracey at Global Traveler for facilitating this.

On top of all of that, Tom is super nice and very friendly with booth visitors. He doesn't even get annoyed when I ask for a picture every time. Hey, if I am promoting a convention, who better to pick from Artist Alley? The man is a legend.
Go to TomRichmond.com for more info on and scheduling on where Tom will be. If you get the chance, I highly recommend getting a commission drawing from him at a convention.

The Godfather at Blizzard Brawl 2019

Blizzard Brawl 2024 is just over two weeks away. Great Lakes Championship Wrestling's biggest event fo the year looks to be better than ever.
Promoted and run by #Superfriend David Herro, Blizzard Brawl is held at Waukesha County Expo Center in Waukesha, Wisconsin. It features a night of great wrestling combined with a meet-and-greet prior to the show and at intermission and after the show. Despite the huge crowd, if you want to meet one of the wrestling legends, there is plenty of time to do so.
I have attended Blizzard Brawl for more than a decade. I have seen Kal (son of David and current Ohio Valley Wrestling star) grow from a toddler to a legit rising star in wrestling. What a trip it has been, too. I have seen hundreds of awesome wrestling legends and stars, as well as dozens of fantastic matches.
This year, I am looking forward to meeting WWF legends Wendy Richter and Jacqueline, along with too many others to list. I'll be quite busy meeting everyone, but as I wrote, I rest assured knowing it is so well-run I will have time to do all.
One of my favorite guests from previous years was The Godfather. A member of the Jay Leno Club, Charles Wright always greets me with a big smile and "hey Jay Leno." Although I like the encounters, I have to admit, he makes everyone feel special.
Actually, all the wrestlers make every encounter special for the fans. I have not had one bad encounter, nor even heard of any ever, at any Blizzard Brawl.

Where is the Darin Corbin Story Going?

Darin Corbin is an original member of the 2econd Wrestling roster. His history there has been interesting.
So far, he has verbally sparred with 2econd promoter Rabbi Fine. While he wrestles on most shows, Rabi Fine has made his wrestling life difficult as payback for Corbin's nefarious actions. On one hand, one could say he is floundering in 2econd, floating aimlessly at the whim of Rabbi Fine. I like to think this is part of a long-range story arc which will have a big payoff. I see Corbin as a future 2econd champ.
Either way, I applaud Corbin for being the ultimate team player. He is talented enough to be champ, yet he is willing to play this role for now.
Again looking at the positive, Corbin is getting solid exposure in a front line story. He just isn't in the title picture, yet. That is really what all wrestlers want. Whether scripted or not, all wrestlers still want to hold the title. It means the company trusts you to be the face of the company. It means more exposure. It means big matches with big name opponents.
If others are like me, they are growing in respect for Corbin. When that title match happens for him and he wins, I think the place  will erupt.
For more info on Corbin and 2econd, go to 2econdwrestling.com. Check here for my updates.

Friend Encounters: Roxi Heart, Joey Roth and Jim S.

Friend Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Worlds collided in this picture. My longtime pal Jim met my other pals Joey Roth and Roxi Heart.

I've known Jim for many years. One of my earliest memories was about 15 years ago, when Jim and I were separately at an appearance by wrestling star Tammy "Sunny" Sytch. My camera jammed (these were the pre-phone cam days). Jim was taking pro photos, but he graciously took the pictures of me and later gave me the prints. Since then, we have gone to or met at many wrestling events.

Knowing he was a big wrestling fan, I turned him onto Rocket Pro Wrestling, based in Joliet, Illinois. Jim enjoyed the show, like I knew he would. After the show, I introduced him to Joey and Roxi, then leaders of the World Famous Fabulous Idols.

Joey and Roxi have been heat magnets at RPW. Fans love to hate them and they love being hated. It all just means they do their job well.

For more info on Joey, Roxi and RPW, go to rocketprowrestling.com. You won't want more info on Jim (lol), but you can look for him in future bits here.
