Evolving bullpen usage

Pizza goes through the various consideration.

In my view, I’d be happy if managers simply reduced using ace relievers with a 3 (or more!) run lead in the ninth inning, and started to use them in tie games in the ninth inning.  That’s it, just that one small change.

As for the pitchers pitching better when they “know” when they come in: Bruce Sutter had better numbers in the 8th than the 9th, and better numbers in the 9th than the 10th.  So did Rollie Fingers.  And so did Kent Tekulve.

Gossage though did better in the 9th/Extra than the 8th.  And John Hiller too.  And Sparky Lyle.

Quiz was pretty even.

All to say: who the h-ll knows whether a pitcher pitches better when he “knows” he’ll come in based on inning.
