Ultimate Chess

?Inspired by Random Chess (Chess 960) created by Bobby Fischer, my boy started creating new chess games, just to mess with our heads.  First, he started with changing the powers of the pieces, but keeping them in their "power" spots.  So, the rook is positioned in the knight's spot, with the power of the knight.  The knight goes to bishop's spot and inherits bishop power.  And bishop-rook completes the transformation.  Then, he adds in a new game where the queen and king swap powers.  Then, he adds in a new game where the pieces and powers are not linked at all: rook positioned in bishop's spot with the power of the knight.

Then he goes deeper, and in addition to the chaos above, swaps all 8 pawns black-for-white: so the black non-pawns are being protected by the white pawns.

So far, there are no new rules: just a trading of places and powers enough that you can't just rely on your prior visuals to clue you in as to what's happening.

Then he went a step further and introduced a rule change: black is protected by 4 black pawns, and 4 white pawns, (occupying alternating black-white on the board) who are "on loan" to him.  As long as the whites stay in their lane.  Once the white pawn crosses over a lane (eating someone), the white pawn is now in control of the white opponent (and his direction goes in the traditional forward sense for white).  So, eating a white bishop with a white pawn is not that big a gain.  And if the white pawn is unimpeded on the way back, might be a clear gain for white.

Having adding that rule, he then decided to swap the power of the black and white pawns: now blacks are protected by 4 blacks that are on-loan and 4 whites that are permanent.  So, there you have it: the swapping of rook-bishop-knight (in power and starting location), swapping of queen-king, and the color-reversal + loan-rule of pawns.  Ultimate chess.

Your head will explode.
