BBM And Bushiroad Get Rolling

BBM's announced five new sets in the past few weeks and Bushiroad's announced some new DreamOrder sets so I figured it was past time for a post about all of them.

- BBM puts out a box set called Icons with a different theme every March and this year's theme is "Prospect".  As usual, each box will contain 37 cards - a 36 card base set plus one "special insert card".  The base set contains three "young players" per team including 2024 Pacific League Rookie Of The Year Natsuki Taneuchi along with Ryuki Watarai.  At least seven of the first round picks from the 2024 draft will also be in the set.  The "special insert card" could be be a "foil print" card, an "EXTREME2025" rookie card (only available for the seven 2024 first round picks), a "Foil Autograph" card (only available for the three Giants players) or a "Handwritten autograph" card (which will not include any Giants players).  There are parallel versions of the "foil print" and "EXTREME2025" cards.  The set will be out in late March.

- The first installment of BBM's annual flagship set - 1st Version - is scheduled to be released in early May, which is a little later than normal.  Everything else about the set, though, is pretty much the same as it's been the past eleven years.  There's the usual 324 player/manager cards (27 for each team), the 12 team checklist cards and the 36 "Cross Something" cards that will be continued in the 2nd Version set later in the year - this year the Something is "Ocean".  That makes a total of 372 cards in the base set.  Nine cards for each team have several different facsimile autograph parallels.  There are also parallel versions for 69 of the rookie cards (or all the rookie cards).  There are three varieties of short printed photo variants - each team has a card with a rare "secret" version, a card with a rarer "ultra secret" version and a card with an even rarer "super ultra secret" version (and they could all possibly be variants for the same player).  There are two non-premium insert sets - "Ultra Hope" (12 cards - one per team) and "Japonism" (12 cards - one per team) - and three serially numbered premium insert sets - "Amazing" (24 /50 cards - two per team), "Cross Foil Signing" (6 cards - all members of the Giants) and "3D Cross Ocean" (12 /25 cards - one per team as you probably guessed).  Some of the insert sets will probably have parallel versions but I don't see anything about them yet.  There are both autograph and memorabilia cards available, including cards with multiple autographs and cards with memorabilia from multiple players.  There will also be "buyback" autographs available.

- BBM has announced the first three of their annual "comprehensive" team sets.  Each set has a base set of 81 cards, most of which are "regular" player cards featuring the manager and the players on the 70 man roster plus a couple subsets (which may not be fully defined yet) to fill out the set.  Each set also has 18 non-premium insert cards split into a variety of sets which also may not be fully defined yet.  The sets also have two or three types of premium inserts that are serially numbered - Treasure, Esperanza and Eminent.  There will be rare parallel versions of some of the "regular" player cards that will feature photo variants or different backgrounds.

- Bushiroad is continuing with their DreamOrder collectible game cards that they introduced last year.  They've announced expansion packs for eight teams.  Each pack is 500 yen and contains five cards.  I'm a little confused on what cards are available in the packs but it appears for each team there's some number (between 10 and 16) of "super rare" (SR) cards, ten "rare" cards and thirty "common" cards.  I think that some of the cards are "reprints" which I assume means they're essentially duplicates of cards that were previously issued.  There are also parallel and "special" parallel cards.  OB players are available as well as active players (although I'm not sure if they're only in the "special" parallel cards which really wouldn't make much sense).  The Giants and Tigers packs will be released on March 22nd, the Buffaloes and Lions packs will be out on April 12th, the Dragons and Carp packs will come out on April 26th and the Hawks and Eagles packs will be released on May 10th.  I assume there will be packs for the other four teams - the Marines, Fighters, Swallows and Baystars - later in the year.

Unexpected Calbee Set and 2025 Epoch Ones

Training camps are opening in Japan tomorrow (well, pretty much as I write this in the evening of January 31st on the US East Coast) and there's a couple new items that have popped up in the last day or so so I thought I'd do a quick post on them.

- For the second year in row, Calbee has issued an unexpected set in January.  Last year it was a 36 card team set for the Hawks that was probably delayed for a few months.  This year it's a 47 card set that's a tie-in to the video game "Pro Yakyu Spirits A"The latest version of the game was released back in September so I suspect that Calbee meant to publish this set earlier.  UPDATE - according to a comment below from twycchang, the set is a tie-in to the mobile game "Pro Yakyu Spirits A" and not the one "Pro Yakyu Spirits" like I had originally thought although I still think the set was originally supposed to have been published earlier.  The cards all have a "cover date" of 2024.  47 is an odd number of cards for an NPB set to have but when you take a look at the checklist, you'll see what happened.  The checklist is arranged basically as four groups of 12 with each group having a player from each of the twelve NPB teams in it.  Well, that's how it was SUPPOSED to be but card #PS-11 did not get issued.  Extrapolating from the teams that are included in the other cards in that first group, you can see that the player who's missing is from the Marines.  I don't think I'm going too far out on a limb to guess that that was originally supposed to be Roki Sasaki but he had to be pulled from the set since he was heading to MLB.  The first 23 cards were picked by Konami while the last 24 cards were selected from user voting.  As far as I can tell, they are available all over Japan (as opposed to the Hawks cards from last year which were only available in Kyushu).  The cards are already on sale as someone on Reddit had a photo up of some of them.  I also was told by Kenny (Zippy Zappy) that he'd seen them in a convenience store - I assume he was in Tokyo. UPDATE - you can see most of the cards in the set (along with kira parallels) over at Jambalaya.

- Epoch is back with their on-demand Epoch One cards.  Like last year, the 2025 edition of the cards is starting with draft pick cards.  So far, there are 47 cards available featuring the 2024 draft classes (regular phase, no development players) for the Marines, Dragons, Fighters, Lions, Eagles, Swallows, Baystars and Giants.  It would not surprise me to see Epoch add cards for the Hawks and Tigers draft picks as well since they, along with the other eight teams, were the teams that Epoch included in the Epoch One cards last year.  The Buffaloes and Carp would surprise me since Epoch has never done Epoch One cards for Orix and hasn't done them for the Carp since 2019.  The cards are still 500 yen each, as they have been since 2018.

More 2025 Sets

There's been a couple new sets announced in the past few weeks so let's get caught up...

- I swear to God that both BBM and Epoch are going out of their ways to tempt me back into buying new sets.  First BBM announces that crazy high school girl's baseball team box set with Ichiro, Hideki Matsui and Daisuke Matsuzaka which is just the kind of oddball set that I love and then Epoch announces what is apparently the first ever OB Samurai Japan set.  The official title of it is "Japan Professional Baseball OB Club Official Card Japan National Baseball Team Career Achievement 2024 Card Set".  It's being done with the OB Club but it's not one of their ultra-high end sets.  It's a 25 card box set with each box containing the 23 card base set, one parallel card and one autographed card.  The guarantee of an autographed card will make the price of the set a little on the high side but there's no listing of a price yet.  The base set contains cards of retired players who played for the professional versions of either the Japanese National Team or Samurai Japan (as the team was called after the 2013 WBC) such as Hisashi Iwakuma, Akinori Iwamura, Seiichi Uchikawa, Michihiro Ogasawara and Nobuhiro Matsuda.  It also includes former team managers Sadaharu Oh and Hideki Kuriyama.  (To be honest, I'd be a lot more interested in this set if it included cards of former professional players who played on the national team as amateurs.  I mean, how cool would it be to have cards of Hideo Nomo and Atsuya Furuta from the 1988 Olympic team?  As far as I can tell, all the guys in this set have appeared on a national team set from Topps, Calbee, BBM or Upper Deck in the past).  From the name of the set, I assume Epoch had intended to publish the set in 2024 but delayed it for some reason.  I'd be curious if this means that Epoch now has the rights to do Samurai Japan cards which would explain why Topps has not released the team set for the Premier 12 squad that I was expecting.  It'll be out on March 22nd.

- Also coming out on March 22nd is Epoch's delayed 2024 edition of their "Holographica" set.  This is another collaboration between Epoch and the OB Club but, unlike the National Team set, it IS one of their ultra high-end sets.  Each six card box retails for 16,500 yen (about $105) and I think are guaranteed to include two autographed cards.  There are 61 cards in the base set, each with a parallel version, and something like seven different varieties of autographed cards.  Players in the set include Sadaharu Oh, Hideki Matsui, Koji Uehara, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Hisashi Yamada and Yuki Saitoh.

- "216 Co., Ltd." (aka "Hits" and "TIC") will be releasing their annual "mini shikishi" card set for the Hawks on March 29th.  There's 32 oversized cards available - 16 "normal" and 16 "special with foil autograph".  There's 16 players listed so everyone has a "normal" and a "special" card.   I think there are real autographs available as well.

- BBM's annual set for retiring players will be out in late February.  Once again the set will not only include baseball players but retiring athletes in other sports including badminton, swimming, soccer and judo.  The set is sold as a 34 card box set.  Each box will include the entire 32 card base set plus two other cards which could both be autographed cards although I think it will more likely be an insert card and an autographed card.  The set includes baseball players like Tsuyoshi Wada, Norichika Aoki and Takayuki Kajimoto.  It also includes a card for long time corporate league player Katsutoshi Satake, who's played for Toyota since graduating from Waseda in 2006.

First Sets Of 2025

The first three sets of the new year have been announced so let's do a quick overview of them...

- Ichiro Suzuki retired in 2019 but apparently missed the game enough that he founded a club baseball team called "KOBE CHIBEN".  He also passed the qualification examination to be coach high school baseball but the rules of the governing organization for high school baseball do not allow anyone working with professional teams to coach at a high school level.  Since Ichiro is still currently employed by the Mariners as some sort of "special assistant", he's apparently only allowed to do high school coaching over the winter.  I'm not clear on all the details but I think he's been primarily working with the women's team from Chiben Gakuen Wakayama High School.  There appears to be an annual game between KOBE CHIBEN and a women's high school baseball team the past four years.  The first game was played in Kobe but the last three have been played in Tokyo Dome.  The 2024 game featured not only Ichiro but also Hideki Matsui and Daisuke Matsuzaka on the KOBE roster.  BBM is putting out a box set for this game.  The official name is something like "High School Baseball Girls Selection VS Ichiro selection KOBE CHIBEN Baseball card set [DREAM]" but I think I'll just call it "Dream".  Each box contains 32 cards - a 30 card base set, one insert card (which is a parallel of one of the base set cards) and one "premium" insert card (which could be a foil signature, memorabilia, autographed or autographed memorabilia card - some of which feature one or more of Ichiro, Matsui and Matsuzaka).  The 30 base set cards have cards of the "three legends" and 20 members of the high school team.  The set will be out in early February.  What's interesting about this to me is that this will be Ichiro's first BBM card since 2009.  I had kind of figured that he had an exclusive deal with Epoch but maybe that ended this year.  It'll be interesting to see if he appears in any additional sets for BBM this coming year.

- "Rookie Edition", BBM's annual draft pick set, is back for its 23rd edition.  There's no real changes from the past few years.  The base set contains 135 cards - 122 cards for the 2024 draft picks, twelve "New Face" subset cards and a single "list of draft picks" card to make the number of cards in the set divisible by three.  The draft picks include both the 69 players taken in the regular phase and the 53 players taken in the ikusei (development player) phase who actually signed with their drafting team (Ryo Furukawa, the first development player pick of the Hawks, did not sign).  The twelve first round picks will again have "secret" versions which are short printed photo variations and all the regular phase draftees will have various foil signature parallels.  There are three types of insert cards - "Starting Point" (12 cards), "Close Relationship" (eight cards) and "Rookie Of The Year" (two cards featuring the 2024 Rookies Of The Year Hiromasa Funabasama and Natsuki Takeuchi).  There are autographed cards available for both the established players in the set (or at least the ones in the "Starting Point" insert set) and the draftees although I believe the draftees are only available as exchange cards.  The set will be released in late-February.

- The Eagles are continuing to collaborate with Epoch on their annual team set.  This set is usually sold in packs (or boxes of packs) at the Eagles' ballpark but also tends to be available nation-wide.  I'm assuming this set that's been announced is the 2025 Eagles 1st Version set although the web page does not say that.   The base set will contain 72 cards of active players on the roster including the development players.  It's unclear if the base set will include the 2024 draft class or not but I'd assume it will not include any players who've left the team since the end of the season (Masahiro Tanaka and Eigoro Mogi) or any players who've joined the team since then.  There are silver and gold foil signature parallels of all the base cards.  There are three types of insert cards - "Baseball Mates" (7 cards), "Keep Smiling" (17 cards) and "Uniform Collection" (22 cards) - and three types of autographed cards - "Authentic", "Record Achievers" and "2025 Rookie Autograph".  In addition, there will be memorabilia cards from game used uniforms of Takahiro Norimoto and Hideto Asamura and the ubiquitous Epoch premium GEM insert cards (both "White" and "Black").  The set will be released on March 1st.

More Samurai Japan Cards

Just wanted to do a quick post to mention that Topps put eight more Samurai Japan Topps Now cards up for sale on their website.  Each card is still 1342 yen ($8.72) if you live in Japan but only 1220 yen ($7.92) if you're in the States although you'll have to pay 4000 yen for shipping in that case (I think shipping is free in Japan).  It looks like there's two cards for sale for the game against the US on November 21st, two cards for the game against Venezuela on the 22nd, three cards for the game against Taiwan on the 23rd and, surprisingly, a card for the championship game from the 24th (that Japan lost).  These cards will be available for purchase until January 1st.

This brings the total number of Samurai Japan cards for the Premier 12 team to 22.  I'm still expecting an actual team set to go on sale as well, probably later this month.

The End For 2024

I wanted to do a quick post about some recently announced/released sets.  I believe that these are pretty much the last sets to be released in 2024 although there's probably one more coming which I'll mention below.

- BBM's ultra high end multi-sport set "Crown" is back for the third year.  BBM's web page is a little light on details but there's more information at the Trading Card Journal.  Six card boxes for this set will retail for 25,300 yen or about $165.  Each box is guaranteed to contain an autograph.  Every card is serially numbered (although I don't know what the counts are to).  The base set has 48 cards and there are four insert sets - "Velvet" (48 cards), "Jet" (48 cards), "Foil Autographed Card" (24 cards) and "Sparkling (3D)" (12 cards) - along with the autographed cards.  The baseball players in the set include OB players like Shigeo Nagashima, Sadaharu Oh, Kimiyasu Kudoh, Alex Ramirez, Kenji Johjima and Kosuke Fukudome and active players like Yu Darvish, Yuki Yanagita, Hayato Sakamoto, Munetaka Murakami and Chusei Mannami.  The set also includes athletes from soccer, basketball, rugby, table tennis, badminton, "athletics", marathon, swimming, skate boarding, fencing, speed skating, figure skating, sumo, boxing and wrestling.  The set will be out in late December.

- As I pretty much expected, Topps' Japanese website is selling Topps Now cards for the Samurai Japan team for the Premier 12.  Seven cards went on sale on Friday (I think) for the first two games of the tournament and another seven went on sale today for the final three games of the opening round.  It looks like the cards will be on sale for a month so the first seven will be available until December 22 and the other seven will be available until Christmas.  I expect there will be additional cards for the Super Round added in the next couple days although it's unlikely there'll be one for the finale (since there really wasn't any highlights in that game for Samurai Japan).  Each card is 1342 yen ($8.72) if you live in Japan but only 1220 yen ($7.92) if you're in the States (since you don't have to pay taxes on it).  Of course, if you're in the States, you have to pay for shipping and that's at least 4000 yen or about $26.  I'm not sure if there's a shipping charge in Japan.  I think that there might have been six cards issued for the warm up games Samurai Japan played against the Czech Republic the weekend before their group in the Premier 12 started but I missed them - they must not have been on sale for very long.  I do expect to see Topps offer a 30-ish card team set for the Premier 12 squad as well before the end of the year.

- Speaking of the Premier 12, there's apparently a card set for the cheerleader/dance squad that appeared between innings in the games in Taiwan.   Jambalaya has a listing for the "CT Amaze & Premier 12 Stars" set.  I don't know any real details about the set other than it appears to have a 70 card base set and a 45 card insert set.  Not sure if it's generally available in Japan or if Jambalaya imported it from Taiwan.

Topps Is Back!

I had pretty much figured that Topps wasn't going to release any more NPB sets this year, given that there wasn't a whole lot of time left for them to do it in.  But I awoke yesterday morning to a couple Tweets from Mint that the Trading Card Journal had just published information on three new Topps NPB sets that would be out in December.  There's no other information out there on the sets yet - not even on Topps' Japanese website (that link is currently redirecting to Topps' US site at least for me although this link seems to work for some reason which is how I know there's no information about the sets there)  - and the details are kind of lacking but I'll go ahead and tell you what I know about them:

- The NPB Chrome set will be released on December 13th.  The base set 216 cards which breaks down to 18 cards per team.  Those 18 cards include the manager and three "rookies" (which are the top three 2023 draft picks).  I'll be curious who they have as the manager of the Lions since Kazuo Matsui stepped down at the end of May but Topps hasn't been really good about making their sets up-to-date.  I am going to assume, though, that like last year's Chrome set, this isn't just an ugly parallel version of the "regular" 2024 Topps NPB set but will have a different checklist and different photos.  There are six types of inserts ("a huge increase" according to the website): "Topps 1959", "Chome All Etch", "Bushido", "Ichiro Majestic Moments", "Base Card Kanji Variation" and "Supercharged".  The "Topps 1959" obviously are cards of active players using the 1959 Topps format.  I assume that "Base Card Kanji Variation" cards are just that - a version of the base card with the player's name in Kanji.  I'm also assuming it's a limited number of cards as opposed to the entire set (in which case it'd be a parallel).  Speaking of parallels, I assume there's the usual plethora of them but the set information doesn't list anything about them.  The big news is that the autographed cards will include active NPB players which is a first for Topps - their previous sets only had autographs for both active and retired players who had played in MLB.  The autographed cards also include autographs for Sadaharu Oh and autographed versions of the "Ichiro Majestic Moments" cards.

- The 206 set is back this year and will be sold in packs this year rather than boxes that were only available on-line.  I don't know how big the base set is but my guess would be 216 cards, just like last year's set.  There are "mini" parallels available but no word on back variations.  The inserts include "Base Cards Image Variations", "Base Cards Comic Book Variations", "Mini Base Cards Image Variation" and "Topps 205".  I'm going to again assume that the "Topps 205" cards are cards that will show current NPB players in the T205 tobacco card design.  There will also be autographed cards featuring both active and "legend" players (although I don't know if "legends" will include retired NPB players who did not play in MLB).  The sample images on the website make it look like this is again a "mugshot" set, at least for the base cards.  The set will be released on December 20th.

- Also being released on December 20th is a first for Topps in Japan - a Stadium Club set.  I've been kind of hoping for something like this since Topps first got am NPB license so I'm looking forward to seeing if they actually get the interesting choices of photos that the MLB version of this set usually has.  The website promises that "The photos in the Stadium Club are excellent!  This work also contains many picturesque photos such as fine plays and fist pumps!" so the expectations are high.  To be fair, one of the few compliments I've had about Topps' NPB products is that they've done a decent job with the photo selection so I'm hoping that trend continues with this.  Once again, the website does not say how big the set is but I'd guess either 180 (15 cards per team) or 216 (18 cards per team).  There's four types of inserts - "Beam Team", "Special Forces", "Power Packed" and "Hanabi" and, again, autographed cards for active NPB players as well as Sadaharu Oh.

While I wouldn't put it past them to sneak out yet another set announcement, it looks like there will be no NPB Bowman set this year.  While it's been a set I've mocked quite a bit, I was kind of looking forward to seeing if they were going to do the "1955 Bowman Anime" inserts like the MLB version had this year.

Last 2024 Sets?

Time to do a quick listing of the baseball cards sets that have been announced in the last month or so.  I suspect that these will be the last sets for 2024, unless Topps finally decides to put something else out.

- Epoch is releasing another of their ultra high-end active/OB player "Stars & Legends" team sets.  The "Giants Stars & Legends with Memorabilia" set will hit the streets on November 30th.  Boxes of this product retail for 22,000 yen (about $144 and I think contain just four cards - although two of them are likely "special insert cards".  The base set has 57 cards - 16 active and 41 OB players (although those numbers may change) - and there's a serially numbered parallel version of each base set card.  There's Epoch's usual collection of insert cards, five different types of autographed cards and seven different types of memorabilia cards.  All the memorabilia cards appear to be fragments of bats.  I'm not sure who all has autographs in the set - typically the Giants don't allow their active players to have autographed cards and at least one of the OB players (Tetsuharu Kawakami) isn't around to sign anymore.

- The 2024 edition of "Career Achievement", one of Epoch's annual collaborations with the Japan Baseball Promotion Association (aka the OB Club), is schedule for release on December 28.  It's another ultra high-end set with six card boxes retailing for 18,150 yen (~$118) - I think two of the cards are guaranteed to be autographs.  The base set has 56 cards and there's a Hologram parallel of each card.  There's apparently five possible autograph cards - "Authentic" (53 cards), "Tribute To The Past" (24 cards), "Baseball Greats" (14 cards), "Baseball Autographs (White)" (25 cards) and "Baseball Autographs (Black)" (25 cards).  I again can't say for sure who has autographs in the set although it appears that all the players in the set are living.  The biggest names in the checklist are Sadaharu Oh, Ichiro and Hideki Matsui.

- BBM's annual ultra high end set - Glory - will be released in late November.  Boxes of this will retail for 25,300 yen (~$165) and will contain six cards.  The base set will contain 36 cards (three players per team I assume) which all have multiple serially numbered parallels.  There are two serially numbered insert sets - "Miyabi" (36 cards serially numbered /50 with a parallel version) and "Glorious 3D" (12 cards that I assume are serially numbered but I don't know the count).  There are a plethora of autograph and memorabilia cards.  The memorabilia cards include both patch cards and bat knob cards.

- BBM is also releasing a box set for the Lions that is the one set I'm listing here that's not super expensive.  Each Lions Collection box will contain 43 cards - the 42 card base set plus one "special insert card".  The set apparently commemorates the "New Yorker Tartan" uniforms that the team wore last summer.  I'm guessing that the 30 "regular" cards in the base set will feature members of the team wearing these uniforms.  I think that the other 12 cardsin the base set - labeled "Lions-Collection Outfit" - will feature players wearing casual clothes.  The possible "special insert cards" include foil signature parallels, autographs and exchange cards for an autographed memorabilia card featuring (I assume) a swatch of the uniforms in question.  Unopened boxes will retail for 4,940 yen (about $33) although opened boxes will be available on the resell market for a lot less than that.  The set will be in stores at the end of November.

November Rain

I was a little surprised to discover that it's been over two months since my last roundup of recently announced sets.  To be fair, there hadn't really been much in the way of new set annoucements until the last couple weeks or so.  This post is going to cover six sets, five of which will be released in November with the other one being out in October.

- The October release (on the 26th to be exact) is for the Epoch NPB Luxury Collection.  This is the third year that Epoch has issued this set and this year's edition appears to be following the pattern of last year's set rather than the 2022 edition which was essentially a Chrome-ish parallel version of a quarter of that year's NPB set.  This year's set features 108 cards (18 more than last years set) but I don't know if they will be evenly split up between the 12 teams (last year's set was unusual in that it wasn't).  It appears from the sample images on the web page that the set will use the same design as this year's NPB set but the photos will be different.  The 108 cards are split between 72 rookies (which I think is the entire 2023 draft class), 33 current players and 3 OB players.  Each card has six parallels (including ones that are /10, /5 and 1-of-1).  There's also a number of insert cards and a bunch of autographed cards.  The autographed cards include at least five OB players (Sadaharu Oh, Ichiro, Kenji Johjima, Hiroki Kuroda and Kazuhiro Sasaki so there's obviously autographs for players who don't appear in the base set.  I don't know if that's the case for active players as well.

- Epoch is releasing their annual Pacific League Premier Edition set on November 9th.  This is one of their ultra high-end sets - boxes for the set will retail for 16,000 yen (about $112) and contain six cards.  I'm not positive but I assume at least two of those six cards are guaranteed to be "special cards" which may include autographed and/or memorabilia cards.  The base set has 54 cards - nine cards for each of the six Pacific League teams.  Again there are a number of insert cards and autographed, memorabilia and autographed memorabilia cards available.

- The latest of Epoch's ultra high-end active/OB player "Stars & Legends" team sets will be for the Marines and has the somewhat unwieldy title of "Chiba Lotte Marines Stars & Legends with Memorabilia".  Boxes of this product retail for 20,000 yen (about $140) and I think contain just four cards - although two of them are likely "special insert cards".  The base set has 55 cards - 31 active and 24 OB players - and there's a serially numbered parallel version of each base set card.  There's Epoch's usual collection of insert cards, five different types of autographed cards and seven different types of memorabilia cards.  All the memorabilia cards appear to be fragments of bats.  The set will be released on November 23th.

- BBM's annual Rookie Edition Premium box set will be out on November 2nd.  As is standard, each box will contain 38 cards - the 36 card base set plus two "premium insert cards".  The 36 cards in the base set are split evenly among the 12 teams and feature the top three "rookies" for each team - with "rookie" in this case meaning "2023 draftee".  The "premium insert cards" are autographed and memorabilia cards which explains why unopened boxes retail for 15,000 yen (around $105).  Or you can buy just the base set in an opened box for less than 1000 yen.

-The Hawks clinched their first Pacific League pennant since 2020 this past week and BBM is commemorating the event with a special box set called "Hawks - Fly Again".  This is the first time that BBM has issued a box set commemorating a pennant winner since 2018 although it used to be pretty standard for them.  Each box will contain the 45 card base set plus one "premium insert card" which could be an autographed card as well as a "foil sign" card.  The base set has 27 "regular" player cards, nine cards with highlights from the season (I'll be curious if their 21-0 shellacking of the Eagles that I witnessed will make this subset) and nine "update" cards (my term, not BBM's).  The "update" cards are listed as "registered players under control after March" which I think are development players (ikusei) who the Hawks brought onto their 70 man roster in March or later.  According to the roster, though, there's only eight of them which may mean that the ninth player is Jeter Downs, who signed with the team at the end of July (and made his ichi-gun debut this past week).  The "update" cards will use the format of the 2024 BBM Hawks set.  The box set retails for 4400 yen ($31) will be released in mid-November.

- The annual set that's recently become the final BBM baseball set each year - Fusion - will be released at the end of November.  As always, this is a multi-headed Frankenstein of a set with five distinct parts of its base set.  There's a 20 card "1st Version Update" subset which will feature players who did not appear in either the 1st Version set or the similarly named subset in the 2nd Version set - the website says this will include Haruto Takahashi and Ayumu Ishikawa but I'm guessing it'll also have Dallas Keuchel.  There's a single card "Rookie Edition Update" which I'm guessing will be for Shosei Takahashi, the Swallows first pick in last year's ikusei draft who didn't graduate high school until June and, as such, did not appear in this year's Rookie Edition set.  There's the standard 99 card "Hall Of Records" subset which basically functions as a season review although it contains cards for both active and OB players - the active players are included for doing something this season and the OB players are included for doing something related to what the active players did.  If this sounds confusing, it's because it kind of is.  There's a 24 card "Title Holders" subset with the league leaders in a bunch of different categories.  There's also a short-printed "Ceremonial First Pitch" subset that BBM has not announced the size of yet which means I can't tell you how many cards the base set has in it.  All I can say is it's at least 144.  There's also the usual insert sets - the 24 "Great Records" cards which highlight milestones reached by players, the 12 "Legendary Player" cards which feature one OB player from each team and the serially numbered premium inserts of "Treasure" (12 cards) and "Esperanza" (24 cards).  There are also autographed cards available for both the active and OB players.

Late Summer & Early Fall Releases

I felt like I just did a round up of the latest set announcements but it's been almost a month since the last one.  So let's get caught up everything, shall we?

- Epoch will be releasing their annual Pacific League Rookies box set on August 17th.  This year's edition will have 42 cards - a 39 card base set, two "special" cards that may be either foil facsimile signature parallel cards or GEM insert cards (both of which would be serially numbered) and one autograph card.  The base set is made up of all of last falls draftees from the six Pacific League teams with the biggest name being Natsuki Takeuchi of the Lions.  There are three types of autographed cards available of all 39 players and the first round picks also have a "baseball" autograph.

- Epoch has also announced the first two 2024 entries in their ultra-high-end combination active/OB player team sets called "Stars & Legends".  The Hawks set will be released on September 14th while the Tigers set will be out on September 21st.  Boxes for each set contain four cards and will retail for 18,700 yen (about $122).  The "base set" (and I use the term loosely here) for each set contains 57 serially numbered cards split between active and OB players (and managers) for the teams.  Both sets will also include three different types of "Decomori Signature" insert cards (I assume those are facsimile signatures) - Gold (/25), Green (/5) and Hologram (1-of-1).  There are six of each flavor.  There are also six GEM insert cards (that are serially numbered but I don't know the count) and six BLACK GEM insert cards (/5).  Both sets will have a variety of autographed cards.  Both sets have "Authentic", "Star", "Legendary", "Baseball" and "Combo" autographs while the Hawks set will also have "Rookie" and "Triple" autographs.

- NPB is celebrating the 90th anniversary of professional baseball in Japan this year (which isn't really accurate as there were some professional teams in Japan during the 1920's if I'm recalling what Jim Allen has said correctly).  BBM is getting in on the festivities by publishing a "Professional Baseball 90th Anniversary" set in mid-October.  This will be a pack-based set with a 144 card base set.  That base set will be divided into 108 "regular" cards (don't know if they'll be split evenly among the 12 NPB teams or not), 18 "Famous Scene" cards (including Shigeo Nagashima's retirement game and Sadaharu Oh's 756th home run), nine "Famous Duo/Trio" cards (multiplayer cards) and nine cards for famous managers (including older ones like Kazuto Tsuruoka, Osamu Mihara and Shigeru Mizuhara).  I think it's kind of cool that there are three different nine card "Best 9" insert sets - one for each Imperial period since 1934 - Showa, Heisei and Reiwa.  There's also a 12 card "Nicknames/Catchphrases" insert set along with the premium "Treasure" insert set (which also has 12 cards).  There are, of course, a number of autograph cards available.  BBM is advertising that they'll have their first cut-autograph ever available with this set - it'll be of the late Masaichi Kaneda.  Kaneda is not the only deceased player who will have autographed cards with the set - Shigeru Sugishita, Choji Murata and Manabu Kittabeppu are also being touted as being available.

- Infinity, BBM's annual multi-sport set, will be released in late October.  BBM hasn't released much information about the set yet so I can't tell you how big the base set is.  As usual, it looks like the bulk of the athletes in the set are active and retired baseball players such as Sadaharu Oh, Atsunori Inaba, Hiroki Kokubo, Hayato Sakamoto and Munetaka Murakami.  The other athletes in the set are from rugby, basketball, volleyball, handball, table tennis, curling, karate, boxing, drone racing and parkour.  For the first time, there will be facsimile signature parallels available for all the regular cards.  There will also be plastic insert cards called "Lucent", some sort of metal inserts and the premium Treasure inserts.

- The 2024 SCC KBO Rainbow set will hit the shelves on the 26th, two days from now (well, actually, tomorrow in Korea).  Dan Skrezyna of Korean Cardboard has, as usual, provided all the details on Twitter.  The base set has 126 cards and I think there's a number of different insert cards - "Rookie" (46 cards and it has five parallels including a 1-of-1), "Limited" (40 cards), "Pairing" (30 cards) and "Rookie Of The Year" (1 card).  There's also 116 sticker autographs (which are not serially numbered) and 46 on-card autographs (/15).  I don't know if it's a coincidence that there's the same number of  "Rookie" cards and on-card autographed cards but I suspect it is not.  Dan has put the base set checklist up at TCDB and I suspect he'll update the listings with the inserts and autograph cards when he gets the information in.

Some Updates And Genesis

I wanted to do a quick post about a new set announcement and some updates about previously announced sets.

- The new set announcement was for Genesis, BBM's annual high end set.  As usual the base set contains 120 cards - ten per team which splits up as nine player cards and a team checklist.  Also as usual, no one really cares about the base set as the attraction of Genesis is the autograph and memorabilia cards available in the boxes.  The different varieties are too numerous to list but there are booklets, super patches, ball autographs and multiplayer autographed memorabilia cards.  There's also a myriad of parallel versions of all the base cards and five "High-grade insert card" sets - Elite Of Nine, Game Changer, "Rookie Limited Insert", Cross Earth and Combo Cross Foil Signing.  The set will be released in late September.

- Calbee Series Two was scheduled to be released "in late June" but I haven't seen any evidence that it has come out yet (although there are four more days in the month).  The official announcement on Calbee's website hasn't changed but I've seen two different things saying the set won't be released until late July.  The first was Jambalaya's front page where they list upcoming releases while the second was this tweet I saw this morning.  (On the other hand I saw several other tweets implying the set would be out on the 27th so we'll see what happens.)

- Vol. 2 of the Central and Pacific League Booster Packs for Bushiroad's Dream Order collectible card game will be released this weekend.   I hadn't realized that Bushiroad had put checklists for all Booster Pack set on their website and I was confused for a moment when it listed 228 cards for all of them when I thought that the Vol. 1 sets were more like 108.  Their listings contain all the parallel versions of the cards - for example the Orix Buffaloes checklist for the Vol. 1 set has four separate Tomoya Mori cards listed - all with the same card number - which is why the numbers are so high.  UPDATE - forgot to mention that the website mentions that Vol. 3 of the Booster Packs will be released on August 24th with Vol. 4 scheduled for October 12th.  No checklists for those sets yet though.

Second Flagships, Team Sets And A KBO Set

It's been about six weeks since the last roundup I did for upcoming releases - long enough that one of these isn't "upcoming" any more but was released last week.

- The second part of BBM's annual three part flagship set will be out in early August.  As has been pretty standard for the last 10 years, this year's edition of 2nd Version will contain a base set of 300 cards which will break down as 216 "regular" player cards (18 per team), 36 "1st Version Update" cards (3 per team), 12 team checklists and 36 cards (3 per team) making up the second half of the "Cross Earth" cross set subset (with the first half having been in the 1st Version set).  There's also a currently unannounced number of "Ceremonial First Pitch" cards which are likely short-printed and not considered part of the base set.  There are six insert sets - "Star Portraits" (12 cards), "Coming Heroes" (24 cards), "Fireworks" (24 cards), "Treasure" (12 cards), "Foil Picturesque" (12 cards) and "Combo Cross Foil Signing" (13 cards) - I think the last four are all serially numbered but I'm not positive.  The set will also include the usual plethora of facsimile autograph parallels as well as the alternate photo "Secret Versions" of various scarcity.  There are a bunch of autographed cards including an autographed Yoshinobu Tsutsugoh card in the style of the autographed cards in the BBM Baystars team set and autographs of rookies and/or prospects Ryuki Watarai, Kengo Matsumoto, Shinnosuke Hada and Keito Mombetsu.  There's also memorabilia cards of Watarai and other rookies.

- BBM has announced the last two of their annual "comprehensive" team sets - the Carp and the Eagles.  I'm going to split the descriptions of them up because the Eagles set is a departure from BBM's standard team set template.  First the Carp set - it'll have a base set of 81 cards, 70 of which are "regular" player cards for manager Takahiro Arai and the players on the team's 70 man roster.  The other eleven cards are split between three subsets that are not fully defined yet - "Young Players To Watch" (three cards), "Early Game Highlights" (five cards) and "Classmates" (three cards).  There are 18 non-premium insert cards split up into four separate, not quite defined sets - "Core Players" (nine cards), "Up-And-Coming Players" (three cards), "Home-Grown Veterans" (three cards) and "Rookies" (three cards).  There are also two serially numbered insert sets - "Treasure" (24 cards) and "Esperanza" (15 cards).  There will also be autographed cards available.  The set will be out in mid-July.

- The Eagles are celebrating their twentieth season this year and BBM's expanded the base set for their Eagles team set to 117 to commemorate this event.  Essentially it looks like they're doing the standard 81 card team set with 67 "regular" player cards for manager Toshiaki Imae and the 70 man roster players and four not fully defined subsets - "Brightest Hope" (two cards), "Main Pitcher" (five cards), "Main Batter" (five cards) and "Record Makers" (two cards) - and then adding an extra 36 cards to cover the Eagles 20th Anniversary.  There are 18 cards for "Team Alumni", nine "Team Records" cards, six "Rookie Reprint" cards and three "Team History" cards.  There's only the usual 18 non-premium insert cards though, split between "Main Players" (nine cards), "Rookie Players" (three cards), "Rising Tide" (three cards) and "Big Comeback" (three cards) along with the serially numbered sets "Treasure" (24 cards) and "Esperanza" (15 cards).  The "Treasure" cards may include OB as well as active Eagles players (or managers - both Katsuya Nomura and Senichi Hoshino appear on the cards).  The set will be out in late July.

- BBM's making a change to their annual cheerleader/dance squad set this year.  Instead of issuing the "Dancing Heroine" set in two parts - Hana and Mai - BBM is now just issuing a single set.  But fear not, cheerleader fans, as the base set will include around 180 cards which was roughly the size you'd get when you put both of the previous sets together.  As usual the set only includes members of the squads from the Tigers, Giants, Swallows, Dragons, Marines, Hawks, Eagles, Lions and Fighters - I have no idea why the ones from the Buffaloes and Baystars are not included (the Carp don't have cheerleaders).  There a holo parallel of all the base set cards and an 18 card "Two-shot" insert set.  There are also autographs and "cheki" cards available.  The set will be out in late August.

- Calbee's Series Two set should be hitting the stores any day now.  This is a kind of bittersweet announcement since I was initially excited that Series Two was coming out at its usual time this year after being delayed until August last year.  I was hoping it meant that there'd be a Series Three in September but Sean (who I have to admit was trying to be more optimistic than me about Calbee this year) pointed out that their announcement said that the cards would be on sale through November, long after Series Three should have been released.  So this will probably be the last Calbee set for the year.  Like Series One, Series Two has 60 "regular" player cards (five per team) and six checklist cards.  Instead of the "Title Holder" subset that Series One had, this one has a twelve card "Player's Association President" subset - because what kid doesn't want a card of their favorite team's Union representative.  There's also the usual 24 card "Star" insert set and a 12 card "Opening Pitcher" box set available only through Calbee's Amazon Japan store.

- Epoch announced two more of their "Premier Edition" team sets - the Buffaloes and the Dragons.   The Fighters set will be out on August 3rd and will have 42 cards in its base set - I think two of those are OB players.  The Dragons set will be released on August 10th and also has a base set of 42 cards which includes three OB players (who I think are coaches) and the mascot Doala.  All the base cards have a "holo foil" parallel and both sets have the usual gazillion insert cards that are too numerous to list here.  The Buffaloes set features five different types of player autograph cards - "Authentic", "Star", "Rookie", "Legendary" and "Combo".  The Dragons set has those same five types plus "Dragons Combo Autographs", "Mascot Combo Autographs", "Rookie Combo Autographs" and "1 of 1 Autographs".

- Finally, the latest KBO set from SCC was released last week on June 12th.  I believe they are only being sold at 7-11s in Korea but I don't know that for sure.  The base set contains 140 cards - 13 cards for each of the ten teams in the league plus 10 cards featuring retired players.  There's also a bunch of parallels and autographed cards available.  Dan Skrezyna of Korean Cardboard has put the checklist for the set up at TCDB and he's had a couple Tweets showing examples of the cards.

Team Sets, A Food Set And The Return Of Topps

Once again, time has flown by since the last time I did a round up of the newly announced sets so without further ado, let's get to it...

- BBM has announced four more of their annual "comprehensive" team sets. The Treasure, Esperanza and Magical inserts are all serially numbered.  (If it's not obvious, the "Regular Cards", "Treasure", "Esperanza" and "Magical" columns are the total number of those type of cards in each set.)

This brings the total number of team sets BBM has released or announced this year to ten with only the Carp and Eagles, which coincidentally are two of the three teams that Epoch has just announced sets for...

- Epoch announced two more of their "Premier Edition" team sets - the Fighters and the Carp.   The Fighters set will be out on June 1st and will have 45 cards in its base set - I think nine of those are OB players.  The Carp set will be released on June 29th and has a base set of 39 cards, only one of which is an OB player (looks like it's a card of manager Takehiro Arai when he was a player - Arai also has a manager card in the set).  All the base cards have a "holo foil" parallel and both sets have the usual gazillion insert cards that are too numerous to list here.  Both sets feature five different types of player autograph cards - "Authentic", "Star", "Rookie", "Legendary" and "Combo".

- Epoch and the Eagles are continuing their team up with what had previously been a Eagles team issued set.  The Eagles 2nd Version set will be released on June 29th and will have a base set of 76 cards.  This is essentially a "comprehensive" team set that not only has cards for all the players on the team's 70 man roster but also the ikusei players.  There's two insert sets - a six card set that I'm not positive but I think has OB players and a seven card "Crimson Heat" set.  There's a bunch of different autographed cards available and "rookie bib" memorabilia cards.  There's also a special version of Epoch's ubiquitous "Gem" serially numbered insert cards.

- Topps is returning for their fourth year of doing NPB sets.  Their "flagship" NPB set will be released on May 24th.  Like the previous three sets, this one has a base set of 216 cards (18 cards per team) and features a design that is similar to the MLB flagship set's design.  (Actually just eyeballing the sample cards in the promo materials, it looks like the design is nearly identical this year.)  There's the usual plethora of parallels and five different insert sets - "Topps1959", "Superstar Blueprints", "Sokkyu", "Warp Speed" and "Sayonara!".  The "Topps1959" (which I assume puts current players into the 1959 Topps design) has 24 cards while the other four have 12.  There will be "featured legend" autograph cards again although they haven't announced who the players are yet - I'm assuming that again there will be no current NPB players among them, just retired players or active in MLB.

- Bandai is issuing an interesting looking food issue set in July.  It's a set of 36 "metallic placards" that will be given away in packages of what I think are rice crackers.  I'm assuming that there's three cards per team.  What's kind of cool about these cards is that they don't have photos - they have player caricatures.  While that's normally not something I'm a big fan of, I find these to be really appealing:

More Topps Now News

I wanted to do a follow up post about the Topps Now NPB cards I wrote about the other day along with some other Topps Now related news:

- I had asked mr friend Ryan to pick up one of the Topps Now NPB cards - Natsuki Takeuchi - for me.  He was willing to do it but pointed out that not only did the card cost 1243 yen but there was a 550 yen shipping fee as well!  I told him the webpage for the card said there was "free economy shipping".  He said, yeah, it says that but when he went to check out, it told him shipping was 550 yen for a total of almost 1800 yen.  We decided to have him hold off on ordering it and give Topps a chance to fix the problem.  I discovered this evening that Topps "fixed" the problem by removing the "free economy shipping" text from the webpage.  So they're serious about charging 550 yen for shipping.  I'm struggling to find the words to describe how insane this is.  Epoch has been doing on demand cards in Japan for seven years now and has charged 500 yen per card the entire time.  That 500 yen includes shipping.  So Topps is attempting to break into the same market in Japan with cards that cost more than twice as much as the existing ones BEFORE you take into account the shipping charge which, by the way, is MORE than the price of an Epoch One card.  Am I getting this right?

- I had not noticed the other day that the seven cards that Topps had for sale were numbered from 1 to 8 with #3 missing.  #3 is no longer missing as yesterday Topps added a card for Hotoka Yamakawa that will be on sale until April 25th, two days later than the other seven cards.

- Topps is also now selling a 30 card Topps Now team set for the Samurai Japan team that took on Team Europe back at the beginning of March.  Unlike the two previous Topps Now Samurai Japan team sets, Topps will not ship this one overseas.  The set cost 8800 yen (about $56) and domestic shipping in this case is free.  The set contains a number of stars including Munetaka Murakami, Kensuke Kondoh, Sosuke Genda and Chusei Mannami.  I'm particularly excited about the fact that it includes cards of the three collegiate players - pitchers Yumeto Kanemura and Yuto Nakamura and outfielder Misho Nishikawa.  There haven't been any baseball cards of Japanese collegiate players since the last time the Panini USA Baseball Stars & Stripes set included memorabilia cards for the collegiate national team in 2020 and no Japanese produced cards since BBM's last Tokyo Big Six in 2013.  The cards will be on sale until May 16th.

- FedEx dropped off an unexpected package at my house a couple days ago.  I was kind of puzzled about who it was from - I really didn't think I'd be getting Zippy Zapped again so soon.  It turns out it was a package from Topps - they'd sent me a parallel card for one of the Topps Now Samurai Japan Asian Professional Baseball Championship cards they were selling back in November.  It was a nice surprise.  They'd sent me some parallels last year for the Topps Now cards for the friendlies against Australia but it had been so long since I'd gotten these cards that I had given up all hope of getting any parallels.  Maybe this means I'll get a parallel or two from the team set like I did last year.  Here's the card they sent me - it's #25/25:

Topps Now NPB Cards

Topps Japan is now offering Topps Now cards for NPB.  They've got seven cards currently up on their website featuring events from the first couple weeks of the season.  The cards are 1243 yen a piece (about $8) although there are volume discounts if you're buying multiple copies of the same card (although there is no bundle for all seven cards available).  Unlike the MLB version of Topps Now, the NPB cards are on sale for a week.  I guess we'll see if Topps will offer new cards every day or if it'll be a weekly offering (or some other interval).

It appears that Topps will not ship these cards overseas.  I suspect there's something in their NPB license prohibiting them from doing so as they also wouldn't ship the Tigers Championship set overseas but will do so with the Samurai Japan cards.

I'm mildly surprised that Topps appears to have made a little bit of effort on the cards backs.  There's text in both Japanese and English describing what's happening on the card and it's not simply a repeat of the text on the front.  Granted it's not a paragraph like the MLB Topps Now cards have but at least it's not just listing when and where the game happened without even giving the score like the Topps Now Samurai Japan cards have had.

I'm going to be curious which teams they end up doing Topps Now cards for.  There's only four teams represented in the first batch of cards - two Eagles, two Tigers, two Lions and a Dragon.  Will they do cards for more teams?  Will they do cards for teams that Epoch isn't doing Epoch One cards for (which would be the Carp and Buffaloes)?  I'll also be curious to see what events get featured on the cards.  So far, the events on five of the seven Topps Now cards were also featured on Epoch One cards.  Since Epoch is somewhat slow in their rollout of Epoch One cards, it's possible the other two will be represented as well.

I guess the big question is whether there's a big enough demand for "on demand" NPB cards for both Epoch and Topps to be doing them.  Given that Epoch One cards are only 500 yen, less than half the price of the Topps Now cards and so far are covering the same events, it's hard to see why anyone would want the Topps cards.

Team Sets And A Flagship

As I get older it seems that time moves faster and faster.  I can't believe that it's been almost six weeks since the last time I did a round up of the latest NPB card release announcements.  So lets' get caught up...

- BBM has announced three more of their annual "comprehensive" team sets. The Treasure, Esperanza and Magical inserts are all serially numbered.  (If it's not obvious, the "Regular Cards", "Treasure", "Esperanza" and "Magical" columns are the total number of those type of cards in each set.)  (I'm not sure why the number of "regular" cards plus the subsets for the Lions set adds up to 80 and not 81.)

- In addition, BBM and the Lions have once again teamed up to publish a Lions team set called "L Collection Vol 1"*.  These cards are sold in 2 cards pack for 500 yen at the Lions' team store at the ballpark as well as their stores at Tokorozawa and Ikebukuro stations and other places.  They are also available on the Lions online store although I don't believe they'll ship them overseas.  There are 24 "regular" cards, 24 "rare" cards and 13 autographed cards available in the packs.  The autographed cards are only for the Lions 2024 rookie class, including the ikusei players.

*It's always called "Vol 1" but I've never seen any "Vol 2" cards

- While I was looking at the Lions online store, I noticed that they're also selling boxes for a Lions "mini colored paper" card set.  While it doesn't say who makes them, I assume it's the usual "216 Co/Hits/TLC" outfit that usually does these as the example cards look like all the others.  The base set (such as it is) contains 20 cards and I think there's both facsimile and real autographed cards available as well.  I am somewhat surprised that I did not see this set listed over at Discount Niki's website - it makes me worry there are other sets I've missed hearing about.

- I did, however, see a listing for a Swallows over at Discount Niki's website.  Like the Lions set, it has 20 "normal" cards along with 20 facsimile autographed parallel cards.  There are also possible autograph cards although I think only 16 of the 20 players in the set have real autographs.  The set will be released on June 15th.

- Epoch has announced two more of their "Premier Edition" team sets.  The new announcements are for the Lions and the Tigers.  There are 38 cards in the Lions' base set and 39 cards in the Tigers'.  Both sets contains a few OB as well as active players.  All the base cards have a "holo foil" parallel and both sets have the usual gazillion insert cards that are too numerous to list here.  Both sets feature four different types of player autograph cards - "Authentic", "Star", "Rookie" and "Legendary".  The Lions set also offers "Combo" autograph cards that as you would assume from the name feature multiple autographs.  The Lions set will be out on April 18th while the Tigers won't be released until May 25th.

- Epoch has also announced the seventh edition of their flagship NPB set and there's a big change in store this year - they've cut the size of the set from 444 cards to 348.  The 348 cards breaks down to 336 "regular" player cards and 12 "Legendary Player" cards (one OB player from each team).  Basically Epoch decided to go from having 36 cards per team to 28, which probably not coincidentally is still one more per team than BBM's 1st Version set.  90 of the cards have parallel versions and there's 24 "Holospectra" insert cards.  Additionally there are autographs for 140 players (including the 12 OB players).  The set will be released on June 22, about a month later than it usually is.

- I'm kind of hoping that Epoch shrank the size of the set in anticipation of some sort of update set later in the season.  If that turns out not to be the case, there's one word that will describe my feelings towards the drop in set size for both Epoch and Calbee's flagships:

This Is Some Bullsh*t

Calbee's checklist for this year's Series One went live yesterday and to say that I'm disappointed with it would be an understatement.  There are only 60 "regular" player cards (five per team) in the set again so the decrease in set size from last year is apparently permanent.  There are 18 "Title Holder" cards featuring award winners and league leaders from last year but only if the players were still in Japan - so no Yoshinobu Yamamoto (PL Wins, ERA, Strikeout leader plus MVP), Yuki Matsui (PL Save leader) or Shota Imanaga (CL Strikeout leader).  The weird thing is there are six checklist cards instead of the usual four which is the most ominous thing about the checklist.  Calbee "normally" has twelve checklists cards across all three Series each year - four per Series.  Each NPB team gets featured on a checklist card.  If Series One has six checklist cards, I think it's a clear indication that they're only planning on doing two Series this year instead of the "traditional" three.  I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect I'm not.

I have recently begun watching the show "Resident Alien" and I'm really enjoying it.  There's a phrase that the main character constantly uses that I feel is very appropriate for this situation:

Topps Tigers Set

I wanted to do a quick post about a new on demand set that Topps Japan is selling to celebrate the Hanshin Tigers winning their first Nippon Series title in 38 years last year.  The set contains 16 cards and is available for 8000 yen (~$53) on Topps' Japanese website.  Unlike the Samurai Japan cards that Topps started selling earlier this week though, these sets are only available for purchase inside Japan.  Topps will not ship them overseas.  There's a relatively short fuse on them as well, as they are only on sale until next Friday, March 29th.

More Topps Now Samurai Japan Cards

Two weeks ago, Samurai Japan played two friendlies against "Team Europe", a collection of players from several European countries.  I've been waiting to see if Topps Japan was going to issue Topps Now cards from the two game set like they've done in the past for the friendlies against Australia in November of 2022 and the Asian Professional Baseball Championship tournament in November of 2023.

The wait was over yesterday as I discovered that Topps had indeed issued Topps Now cards for the games.  There are eight cards in all available on Topps Japan's website - four for each game.  The Game One cards are for Munetaka Murakami, Kotaro Kurebayashi, Kensuke Kondoh and Shunpeita Yamashita while the Game Two cards are for Yudai Yamamoto, Chusei Mannami, Sosuke Genda and a group shot of the six pitchers who combined to throw a perfect game.  The pitchers aren't named on the card (not enough room on the front and the backs are generic as always) which possibly allows Topps to get around any licensing issues with the two collegiate pitchers (although I don't know if there really is an issue).

Each card is listed at 1243 yen (around $8.25) but that's a little deceptive as that includes tax for Japanese consumers.  If you're buying the cards from outside of Japan, they're 1130 yen apiece or about $7.50.  Of course, you have to pay for them to ship outside of Japan and shipping even just a single card to the US will run 2000 yen (around $13.25).

For the first time since Topps Japan started doing these, you can buy all the cards in one bundle at a substantial discount.  The eight card bundle sells for 5800 yen (about $38.50) for outside of Japan and 6380 yen ($42-ish) inside of Japan.  The total with shipping to the US for the bundle would be 7800 yen or right around $52.

The cards will be available until 1 AM EDT on April 18th.

I will be curious to see if Topps Japan issues a complete team set for this iteration of Samurai Japan like they've done for the other two that they've issued the Topps Now cards for.  It would be cool to get "pre-rookie" cards of the four collegiate players.

I think it's probably safe to assume now that Topps will be issuing Topps Now cards for the Premier 12 team this fall.

Spring Is Coming

It's been about a month since the last time I did a round up of the new sets coming out, there's been a bunch more announced and I'm going to too busy to post much for the next week or so which means it's probably time for another roundup.  So without further ado...

- The 2024 edition of BBM's annual "Icons" box set will be out in late March and is called "Icons - Generations".  While that name might lead you to believe that the set will feature veterans as well as younger players, you'd be wrong.  The set apparently will only include younger players.  The web page touts Roki Sasaki, Hiroya Miyagi and Yasunobu Okugawa as being in the set along with nine rookies.  Each box contains 37 cards - the complete 36 card base set (three cards per team) and one "special" insert card which could be a "foil print" card, an "EXTREME2024" rookie card, a "Foil Autograph" card or a "Handwritten autograph" card.  There are parallel versions of the "foil print" and "EXTREME2024" cards.  The "Foil Autograph" cards only include the three Giants players since Yomiuri does not allow their players to have authentic autographs in any card sets.

The Treasure, Esperanza and Magical inserts are all serially numbered.  (If it's not obvious, the "Regular Cards", "Treasure", "Esperanza" and "Magical" columns are the total number of those type of cards in each set.)  In addition, I think there's a significant subset of the player cards (12 players plus the 2023 draftees) for the Hawks and Tigers which will have parallels with different photos (which are not being referred to as "secret" versions for some reason).

Release Date Team Regular Cards Subsets Non-Premium Inserts Treasure Esperanza Magical Other

- Not to be left out, Epoch has released information about the first two of their "Premier Edition" team sets - the Swallows and the Baystars.  The Swallows set has a base set of 40 cards - 37 active players and three OB players.  The promo materials for the Baystars set says the base set has 40 cards but it actually lists 51 cards - 44 active players and seven OB ones.  Both sets have a gazillion inserts that I honestly don't feel like listing, especially since they don't have the same ones - check out the links if you want to see the names of all 15.  Both sets feature five different types of player autograph cards - "Authentic", "Star", "Rookie", "Legendary" and "Combo".  The Swallows set also includes "mascot combo" autographed cards and something called "Tsubakurou's Flip" which I'm not quite sure is.  The Swallows set will be released on April 20th and the Baystars set will be out a week later on the 27th.

- Calbee's Series One set will be released on April 1st which is about all I can tell you about it as Calbee's not releasing the checklist for it until March 27th (the same irritating thing they've done for the last three years).  I'm not sure but I think the webpage says something about the cards not being in wide release until April 15th although I certainly could be misunderstanding the Google Translation.
