The municipality covered an area of 83.57 km2, and had a total population of 19,134 (2006). Its last mayor was Jørn Terndrup, who was a member of the Venstre party. Nyborg Municipality bordered Ullerslev Municipality to the north and northwest, and Ørbæk Municipality to the south and southwest. After the construction of the Great Belt Bridge in 1998, the municipality also connected to Korsør Municipality. Until then Korsør and Nyborg had been connected through ferries. The municipality ceased to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen 2007 (the Municipality Reform of 2007). It was merged with Ørbæk and Ullerslev municipalities to form a new Nyborg municipality.
