After some attempts to figure out why I am so consistently tired/cranky/lonely and feel better, I want to accept myself as those things. [more inside]
Link between a history of undernourishment and chronic fatigue?
Is there research on the possibility of chronic undernourishment paired with exercise, resulting in major weight loss, leading to long-term fatigue or ME-CFS? The theory would be that if you are expending a lot more calories than you are taking in, your body will make you feel tired to stop weight loss. If this happens over and over, it might preemptively make you tired whenever you burn even a small amount of energy through exercise. Especially if you are exercising on an empty stomach or even slightly low blood sugar. [more inside]
I'm tired every day. What steps can I take now to start fixing this?
I've had an ongoing problem of feeling mentally and physically tired on most days for several years. This has reached a point where it's significantly affecting my work performance and my ability to be mentally present for my family. It's a given that a long-term solution will require gradual changes over time, but what can I do first to get some relief as soon as possible? [more inside]
The energy, where does it come from?
I would like to be someone with a lot of energy to do a lot of things. When I was younger I think maybe I actually had a lot of energy or at least average (ran half marathons, completed a challenging post-grad degree, traveled). I can't figure out where other people are finding the wherewithal to do some pretty standard stuff. Maybe you can explain. [more inside]
What is meant by "and I'm just so tired"?
I often see this phrase online, generally at the end of a long list of bad things, and while the general sentiment is clear, I've realised that I actually don't know exactly what the speaker generally means to convey! [more inside]
You’re not my doctor, buuuut…does this sound like sleep apnea?
I’m eagerly awaiting a sleep study at the end of this month, but do my deteriorating symptoms sound familiar to you? Or if there are other routes you suggest I investigate while waiting? [more inside]
Buying a salad instead of getting a housekeeper
I'm in a position where I can work more consulting hours and make more, or work less consulting hours and get paid less. I've been thinking about whether my ideal lifestyle includes getting a housekeeper and therefore having more time to work, or continuing to do a lot ourselves. Now that I understand that I'd like to avoid getting a housekeeper for specific reasons, I'm looking for hacks to get more time anyway. [more inside]
Why do I get so tired when I arrive at home?
I had a great day at work, felt fine, and immediately as soon as I got home I feel bone-tired and my face feels flushed. This happens 2-3 days a week. Tried to nap, can’t fall asleep. I stopped drinking recently, if that might be related. Does anyone have this or know why it might be happening or how to fix it? It’s killing my house-chores productivity. Thanks in advance!

How to be less of a hangry, tired toddler
I get cranky and disagreeable when I am hungry or tired, it seems (to me) more so than most people. I’ve been working on this by being more attentive to when I’m starting to feel it coming on, and having a quick solution on hand (having a snack or excusing myself to close my eyes in a quiet room, for instance). But sometimes it’s just not possible or practical to do anything about it immediately - is there some way I can “train” myself to function better when I’m feeling this way?

How much can low ferritin affect how tired you feel?
If I have a low(ish) ferritin level but normal iron, TIBC, and transferrin saturation, could the ferritin level still be causing my fatigue? [more inside]
What is a normal level of tired?
I feel exhausted, a lot, lately and I'm wondering if there's a medical reason or if this is just normal for someone with my age and lifestyle. [more inside]
This is not a nap!

How do you recover from burnout?
In these days of job precarity, I have a habit of giving 150% to my job. Not surprisingly, I burned out. Now that my last job has ended, I have the opportunity to take a real rest. But actually, I'm completely exhausted. [more inside]
How to hit the reset button on a foul mood
Dear Metafilter, my short vacation that I've been looking forward to for months is off to a bad start. I'm grouchy, tired, and deeply annoyed. I don't want to spend the rest of the day like this. Is there anything I can try to reset my mood? [more inside]
Tired of being fatigued all the time
I've been feeling fatigued for the past two months. Not sleepy or lethargic, just physically heavy or "droopy"--like I'm wearing a lead suit and I just really really want to go lie down. It seems to get worse after moderate physical activity (or significantly worse after strenuous activity), until I've had a nap or been back to bed. I'm less tired after I've rested. I've been to the doctor but they haven't figured anything out yet. I'm hoping the internet might have some good suggestions for things to talk about with them or try before my next appointment. Why can't you fix your face?
I've repeatedly had issues where people have told me that I look sad or frustrated and stressed out. I work in retail and I think it may be negatively affecting my coworkers. [more inside]
Of Sleep and Rage
At least once a week, often more, I get woken up by something at night shortly after I've fallen asleep. My body then thinks it's had a refreshing power nap, and then I'm awake for the next two hours, growing increasingly miserable. This is unpleasant, rage-inducing and leads to physical exhaustion the next day. Any advice for quickly calming the mind and returning to sleep? [more inside]
Preparing for doctor's visit about fatigue
I decided my fatigue is problematic enough to complain about it to a nurse practitioner. I've had some of the initial screening done, and I'm wondering what next steps would be like / symptoms to track to make this appointment useful. [more inside]
In search of the right expression . . .
If you "woke up on the wrong side of bed," you woke up cranky and irritable. But what if you were awakened from a deep sleep and are confused, disoriented, and sleepy? Is there an expression/idiom for that? This happened to me this morning, and I feel totally wrong-footed.
Is it reasonable to go to the doctor for feeling mildly tired?
I've been feeling extra run-down and tired for the last few months, despite generally getting what should be enough sleep. I know standard advice is to talk to a doctor, but I'm having imposter syndrome. Is this really serious enough to talk to her about? Should I just suck it up and try to be better about sleep hygiene? Can hayfever be this bad?
It’s spring in Australia, yay! But I have my usual bout of hayfever, but this year it seems to be particularly bad. I’m pretty sure I had a cold last week, but that I think is resolved, but I am still left with feeling, well, really crappy and am even taking time off work. [more inside]
Living is hard
My childhood included abuse, neglect, loneliness, and loss. As a result, I have issues with patience and warmth. I can be sarcastic, detached, and brusque. I actively work to be softer and more patient when dealing with people, and the cumulative effect is exhausting. I’m also an introvert. Basically, just being normal in the world every day feels like work. Does this sound like you? [more inside]
The lights will flicker on and off...
Whenever I'm really tired (like I've been up all day), my eyesight flickers when I blink. Kind of like when the power acts up and the lights flicker in a room. But with whatever I'm looking at. What the hell is that? Is it my brain being tired, or my eyes being tired? Is there a name for this phenomenon? I'm 23 and have astigmatism treated with glasses. I just find it weird and am curious.
What helps with PTSD-related exhaustion?
I have been in therapy for a few years to deal with complex PTSD. It has made a world of difference with the emotional and cognitive aspects of trauma, but I still struggle with the physical symptoms of PTSD (like overactive nervous system and digestive stuff). The hardest of these to deal with is being tired all the time. Assume I have gotten all my levels checked, eat healthy, and sleep decently well. What else is worth trying?
Recovery for the tired, tense and troubled
I'm on the tail end of a kind of intense and long week. I've had a constant headache for two days, stayed up later at night than usual and have gone to social things and school non stop. I'm probably dehydrated too. My head muscles are super tense and I went through a emotionally shaking (but not totally bad) ecperience. Tomorrow afternoon and Sunday I have most of the day to try to recover. What should I do to try to heal from all this craziness? [more inside]
Why does my brain feel fried?
I was just in a business meeting for an hour and a half and I had trouble focusing or being able to think coherently towards the end. I am very tired and I feel like I need a nap. I did have enough sleep last night. I still feel overstimulated and somewhat overwhelmed. How can I expand my attention span and reduce my sensitivity? [more inside]
How do you deal when you're tired all the time?
I'm a medical student doing my required clinical rotations. Like all of my classmates, I'm absolutely exhausted at the end of the afternoon. But somehow, I need to pull it together to study in the evenings. People who have had to work through situations like this, how do you do it? How do you make your brain work when you're tired all the time? [more inside]

Help me fall asleep on my back without choking on my tongue.
I find it much easier and more comfortable to fall asleep lying on my back than on my side or stomach, but once I actually slip into unconsciousness my tongue falls into the back of my throat and suffocates me, causing me to wake up. Is there anything I can do about this? [more inside]
Split/biphasic sleep pattern. Help me adjust it!
This isn't the usual sleep question and I've had a hard time finding answers. Basically I will sleep for a few hours, then wake up for anywhere from 30 min to a hour. Then I go back to sleep. The problem is when this happens later in the morning, so that second "sleepy time" hits at 9 or 10 am. How can I keep that from happening? [more inside]

How to feel more positive more often?
So this last year has been quite tough. And I find that often in the evenings all I want to do is sit at a computer and consume news/videos/blogs. Well, that's not quite true. Actually I'd rather be creating. But I can't find the energy to lift myself up and turn from consumer to creator. I'm just too tired. [more inside]

Depressed and Anxious - Unmotivated unless I take a Tranqulizer
This seems counter-intuitive so I thought I'd search out insight as to why this happens. I have been treated for depression with anxiety for over 20 years and for the most part, my daily medicine helps me function like a normal person. I find that I tire very easily and after having explored and corrected regular medical reasons (Low D) I still feel like coming home after work and doing absolutely nothing. It feels therapeutic to crawl into bed even though my heart and stomach feel full of anxious energy. [more inside]
Spanish language version of HALT (hungry, angry, lonely, tired)?
I have an English-language health handout that includes the self-care check-yourself acronym HALT (Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired - more background on it here). I want to have the handout translated into Spanish. Is there an "official" Spanish-language version of HALT that therapists use? I don't want to make up something new. [more inside]

Never Get Tired
This is somewhat of a strange post, but I thought that I would post it anyways. The bottom line is that I never get tired anymore. I still sleep at night, but I don't feel any different when I go to bed then when I wake up in the morning. For nine years I used to be on Adderall for ADHD and I have been off of it for almost two years now. [more inside]

Problems getting up in the morning. Very frustrated!
Lately, I have been caught in a very frustrating chain. Sometimes I wonder why I even set my alarm, because I always smack the snooze, often multiple times, and usually wake up at a less than desirable time, feeling bad about it. [more inside]
What's with my weird sleep pattern?

Experiencing extreme fatigue after driving
If I drive for about an hour, city or highway, I am extremely tired when I get to my destination. This happens during times of day when I am otherwise perfectly alert. I usually have no problem staying awake during the day, but if I have to drive, my body is screaming for a nap afterwards. [more inside]

Advice for sleeping with sudden insomnia?
I haven't been able to sleep well for the past week; this is totally out of the blue, as I usually get around 7 hours of z's. I think it's due to stress. I'm averaging around 3 hours on a good night, which is taking its toll on my physical/emotional/cognitive health. I'm actually dreading getting into bed tonight, and would like some advice from MeFites who are struggling with/have overcome insomnia on how I can best rig my chances for possibly sleeping well.
