No more Brooks Pure Cadence!

I just found out that Brooks is going to discontinue their Pure Cadence shoes. I've been using them for years and, dang it, I love them. I like the stability and zero drop. For that reason, they're great for racewalking and trail running. My running store said to try the Altra Escalante. I like their zero drop and the cushioning. The heel's a little wide, though, which makes it hard to plant the foot during racewalking. Any recommendations for a low drop, minimally cushioned, light weight running shoe? Thanks.

Why can't Lookout Security's VPN work with my own VPN?

Hello folks. I have Lookout Security Premium for my Android phone. I just learned that, as part of its Safe Browsing tool, it uses a VPN. I also have my own VPN. I asked Lookout if they would cancel each other out. They said, when Safe Browsing mode is on, their VPN takes precedence over my own VPN. I would hate to have to give up my own VPN without at least knowing if it's the best thing to do. Does anyone have any opinion on this? Thanks.

How do I use Google Slides Speaker Notes in Zoom?

Hello everyone. I am giving a Google Slides presentation via Zoom. I have the presentation done. Zoom's share screen was easy to figure out. What I can't figure out is this. If I use Speaker Notes in Slides' Present Mode, how do I know if the person with whom I'm sharing it isn't also seeing the notes and not just the Presentation? I've read articles and watched videos. From what I've gathered, I'd need two monitors. One to do the presentation. Another to see the notes. Is that true? Thanks in advance.

How to download ALL images in a WeTransfer exchange?

My friend has sent me 43 images via WeTransfer. They total 72 mg, as per the WeTransfer download page. I can preview all 43. I can also download them individually. And it's worked fine three times this past week with similar though smaller WeTransfer files. When I download them as a group, though, it only zips 14. It's always the same 14. I have a Mac 10.13.6. I've gone through WeTransfer troubleshooting. I've tried this on three browsers. I've tried The Unarchiver app. And now I turn to AskMeFi. Any ideas? Thank you.

Why the credit hit...?

I just paid off a credit card. Then I used a bank Supercheck (2.9% APR for 18 months), to pay off most of another. I figured I'd continue to make the same monthly payments but, with the temporary interest rate, I'd be paying principal instead of interest. Sounds sensible, I thought. I just learned that my credit scores from two agencies went up 21% and 34% because of the hit from the Supercheck. Doesn't the fact that I used that Supercheck to pay off most of another card figure in the calculations? Thanks for any insight anyone might have.

Gmail won't load

For a couple weeks now, Gmail won't load on my Chromebook. Apparently it's been an issue for others. I went through the protocols I found online. Delete cache, and so on. No success. It works in Incognito mode. The slow, standard, clunky mode works but, yuck. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Word/Excel for Mac won't load

I've got the latest versions of the software and the Mac OS. I checked forums. There seems to be no definitive answer, either as a workaround or else something from Microsoft. You're asked to Force Quit. Sometimes it will open after that, sometimes it won't. Same with Excel. I've read where you have to go in and delete various plists or whatever they're called. That doesn't work. Is there consensus on how to deal with this? Microsoft won't respond to my inquiries, I can't find nothing conclusive on their forums, and I'm sure there has to be something to do. Thanks and happy holidays.

What's the name of a 60s TV Spanish course in Los Angeles?

This question itself is useless but if I can't figure out I'll never stop thinking about it. In the mid-60s, there used to be a TV Spanish learning show on weekday mid-mornings in Los Angeles. All I remember of the program is that it featured a woman who would introduce some words or a phrase, say it once, and then whisper it one or two times. Any idea of the show's name or the instructor's name? Thanks.

Two-sided printing issues with Mac OS Sierra upgrade

I upgraded to Sierra on my iMac. Immediately the printer and computer couldn't communicate and I couldn't scan (printing worked, though). After many long and many conversations with Mac and HP tech support, we figured out a workaround. Now, I just noticed that when I print multiple page Word documents, it only prints 2-sided. The Print dialogue box no longer has the two-side box option. I've again talked to Apple and HP and have looked online into known issues between Sierra and Word, all to no avail Any ideas, anyone? How describe the American arts system to Chinese arts officials?

I'm going to spend a day lecturing, to a large group of visiting Chinese art officials, about the nuts and bolts of the American arts system. Literally, from org charts to budgets to curating to education to publicity to fundraising to opening receptions. Yes, that's a vague, enormous topic that I need to narrow down. I'm comfortable with the material; it's the structure and the audience (I'll have a translator) that I'm concerned about. I'm thinking I'll spend the first half of the presentation discussing non-profits, the second half comparing nonprofits to private arts institutions. [more inside]

How to deal with a landlady who wants to keep an entire security deposit

Until now, I’ve had a cordial relationship with my landlady. When I gave her my notice, she called and said that she was going to keep my entire security deposit ($950). This came out of the blue. She claims it was for two things. A few months back, she replaced my stovetop. There was nothing wrong with it and I hadn’t asked her to replace it. [more inside]

Where can I find info on the contemporary Saudi Arabian art scene?

I'm organizing as as-yet themeless, artist-less show on contemporary Saudi Arabian art for an American audience. What does it mean to create art that is "true to its times?"

I read a recent review in The Economist about a Whistler show in Washington D.C. This first part of this sentence set me thinking: "Whistler was keen to create works that were true to the times, but he also wanted to make art that was beautiful and enduring." My question is, how would you define "works that were true to their times?" I don't know if this is an academic idea or not. I'm thinking it's work that answers contemporary questions, be they in Whistler's era or 2014. I just don't know what those questions might be or how to go about finding them. And I don't know the causal relationship between the work and its times: does the work frame the questions or do the questions frame the work? I hope I've expressed this clearly. Thank you.

How to express interest in a job after the first interview?

Last week I interviewed for a job that, after the interview, I decided I really want. The interview went well in that I got out everything I wanted to get out. The moment I got home I wrote thank you emails. They said they'd be in touch in 7 to 10 days. This is day 7. Would it be appropriate to write again to express my interest in the position or, as I suspect, am I just being impatient, if not needy? I've read in these posts and elsewhere that a huge mistake job seekers make is not outright asking for the job. In my thank you emails, I wrote that I thought my skills were a perfect match for the position, that I could easily fit into the culture, and that I was very interested in the position. So, write again, or would that just be gilding the lily? Thanks.

Is there an equivalent to Amazon's now-deceased "Eyes?"

For a while, Amazon had a service called "Eyes." You could type in an author's name and they would email you when a new book by that author was published. It was great if you were following, say, a couple dozen detective series at once and wanted to stay on top of new additions. Then they discontinued it. Does anyone know of an equivalent service? Does anyone have experience with Labor Boards?

I'm taking a former boss to the Labor Board (in California) next week. He owes me back wages, some or all of a bonus (he never provided me with the bonus criteria, as he said he would do in the offer letter, despite my numerous requests), he never paid two years of payroll taxes - another story, involving an ongoing IRS investigation. Next week is the preliminary hearing. I'm wondering what to expect. Should I have all of my material (offer letter, testimonials, emails) for this meeting? Or is this simply to determine whether an amicable solution can be found before a proper hearing? I would appreciate hearing about similar experiences - and lessons learned from these experiences. Thanks.

Does Omega 3 fish oil, even temporarily, relieve arthritic knee pain?

A couple of years ago, I was diagnosed with arthritis in my left knee (no surprise there: ultramarathons, century bike rides, fiendishly long hikes). I've been taking glucosamine chondroitin for a couple of years. The pain flares ever so rarely and when it does, its tenure is brief; and so, it's totally manageable. Now, lucky me, the right knee, the one I had cartilage taken out of 15 years ago, has decided to antagonize me. This while I was taking the glucosamine chondroitin. I've read of the benefits of Omega 3 oil (capsules, serum) for joint pain. I'm writing to inquire if anyone out there has any actual experience, good or bad, with such oil. Thank you.
