How to (mount? set?) deceased cat's tuft of fur?
My beloved cat Heidi died recently and I'd like to make a keepsake from her fur that I can touch. Does anybody have experience with trying to set or mount a tuft of fur to something (something adhesive? poked through something?) so that it can be touched and still remain in place? [more inside]
What to expect during cat introduction?
Back in June I posted a question wherein I was debating on adopting a second cat. I decided then not to, but the cat distribution system has delivered me one anyway. Although I have been reading a lot how to introduce cats properly, I don't know what to realistically expect. Please see inside. [more inside]
I think want to adopt another cat. Should I? Can I?
I have a 14 year old cat. My dog died in March and I think she is lonely. However, I have no idea how she would do with another cat. Also, she eats prescription food free-form and I don't know how to keep another cat from eating her special food. I don't want to cause her stress or get her ill from another cat. Any thoughts?
Cat wrestling gloves
Our ferocious cat (tax) loves to wrestle. However, she is very serious about it, and her front and back claws get involved as well as her teeth. Can you recommend a cat-proof gauntlet I can wear that will protect my hand and forearm while I give my cat a good loving workout?
What to name a new (to me) kitty?
He's a nine-year-old all black cat, very sleek and gorgeous. His foster is calling him Midnight but I favor cat names with more plosives so they can hear their names more easily... [more inside]
What’s wrong with my cat? (TW: very sick cat)
Our terrifying bruiser of a house panther (cat tax) is very sick. We’re in the middle of rounds of tests with the vet, leading to what seems like an ominous conclusion. I guess we’re mining hopium, here. Input from vets or experienced cat owners very welcome. Snowflakes… [more inside]
Three headed cat hunt
Please help me find the following objet d’art/statue/figurine/vase(?) my friend saw at an Airbnb. White porcelain statue of a long haired cat, with three heads— THE THREE HEADS ARE ORIENTED VERTICALLY, one atop the other. This is not a Cerberus-style three heads. The style of the piece is very classically “cat art your great aunt has in her living room” but…three heads. I do not know if it is a vase. I do not know if it is hollow. I do not know if there is a makers mark/logo on the bottom (said friend has since departed from the Airbnb). I WANT ONE!

Help our cat-loving family find our feline!
Our 8yo has a cat allergy, originally detected by a bunch of sneezing and confirmed by a blood test. Our family REALLY wants a cat. We have found a Siberian cat breeder with 8-month-old kittens available. Siberian cats are known to have lower levels of allergens, but each cat has a different level. You can get each cat tested, but it's expensive and unreliable. We are meeting with the breeder and several of her cats this weekend. How can we maximize our chances of choosing a cat that our kid doesn't react to? [more inside]

It's 19 degrees outside and sweet kitty will not use litter box, help!
I'm in Austin where it rarely gets this cold, it's also very windy, so windchill is probably like 5 Fahrenheit or something. I'm house- and cat-sitting for a friend who is out of the country. Kitty, sweet older female, is used to going outside to do her business but it's too cold. [more inside]
Help me trust my vet and/or learn to ask better questions?
Yesterday I took my cat Harley into the vet. There were a lot of recommendations and I don't know how well I did fielding them. This question is about (a) making better decisions under pressure at the vet's office and (b) generally does my vet seem to be acting more or less reasonably. Not asking for vetinary advice.

NYC-Cat-Filter: Vet Recommendation (Queens preferred)
Our beautiful companion Ada needs a new vet. She is FeLV-positive, but has been healthy and happy for the year she's been with us. We're in Jackson Heights, and are, for various reasons, disenchanted with the neighborhood guy we've been seeing. The local vet has been calling, and telling us she needs new vaccinations, but we really don't want to go back to him. [more inside]
Which cat dishes should I get?
I need some new "wet food" cat dishes. And because Reasons, I'd like to order something off Amazon ASAP. I was using these, which are fine, but I'd like something that has a higher side (so less food gets pushed out) but also I know about whisker fatigue so I'd like to avoid that as well. Suggestions?
Cat has an open sore. Vet or wait and see?
We noticed an open cut/sore on our cat's scruff a couple of days ago. Here is the scab. Cute cat tax inside. [more inside]
Full litter box changes for multi-cat households
I have three cats and five litter boxes. I scoop all boxes daily and have a good routine in place for that piece. What I don't have a good process for is changing out the entire litter box every few weeks so it's not a giant filthy stressful mess. This feels like it should be so incredibly straightforward but it's just not in our house and I feel like I'm missing some key part of the process. How do you do it? My specifics inside. Should I return my newly adopted cat to the animal shelter?
I've had this sweet cat for just a month, but right now I'm on antibiotics for an infected arm from where he scratched and bit me on a few occasions. I have an appointment to return him to the shelter on Sunday, but my heart is breaking about letting him go. [more inside]
Is it emergency vet time?

Cat enrichment ideas? Difficulty level: special needs senior cats
We have recently become perma-fosters for two lovely senior cats (14 and 20). They seem bored when we WFH during the day. Any ideas for what we can implement for them that will entertain them while we work? Especially on a budget? Cat-level snowflake details inside! [more inside]
How can we ensure our blind senior cat always uses his litter box?
Our beloved cat, Ash, is 15 and has been blind for a couple of years. He had always been 100% with the litter box - never a problem at all - until he went blind. He knows where the box is, but if it's not immaculate, he will just poop on the floor. Please help! [more inside]
Cat Whisperers, Assemble
Our rescue cat has come so far since we first got him, but he's a feline who's inclined to swat and bite. In under a month, he's self-transitioned from "I have murderous intent and will draw blood if you get anywhere in my vicinity!" to "If you're doing something I don't like, I will lightly swat and bite but mostly not draw blood." And I'm wondering the best tactic on my end to help him stop this behavior. Does an adult cat ever fully transition out of such behavior? [more inside]
Cat Whisperers, I need you

My cat won't use technology.
Last year y'all helped me adopt my roommate's cat, and now I have a much lower-stakes question about life with him. I installed a chip-reading pet door so Mugen can let himself in and out of my room, but he won't use it by himself yet. Do you have any tips on training a cat to do a "scary" thing? [more inside]
Imagining a pressure-sensitive purr mat

Catfilter: Help me make a cat's injections less unpleasant!
We are looking after my friend's lovely, sweet, affectionate, diabetic cat while she is out of the country. Everything is going well...except the insulin injections. Best way to say thank you to three vet offices
My cat recently lept off my 4th floor balcony. He was saved by his vet. His vet is one who works in three different offices (small vet chain) and all of them - from the receptionists to the techs to the vet need to understand how profoundly grateful I am for all they have done. I want to thank them but I don't know what's practical or appropriate and I need suggestions, please. Details inside. [more inside]

How does flea medicine get to the fleas?
Step 1: You squeeze a little mini tube of flea medicine on the back of your cat or dog’s neck.
Step 2: ???
Step 3: The adult fleas, larval fleas, or flea eggs laid in your pet’s fur come in contact with the flea medicine and it disrupts a specific protein etc. (details described in the more detailed product information for vets that pet owners can also find on an internet search), so that any flea that comes into contact with the flea medicine for its duration of effectiveness is killed.. My cat has sad poops. Vet?
My cat started having dry, hard, pellet-y poops a little over a week ago. I've been trying various things including more/better water dishes, more brushing to ward off hairballs, and wet food with extra water. She is still pooping at least every other day and is still getting zoomies/jumping/eating/snuggling/etc. a normal amount. How do I know when it's time to see a vet? [more inside]

What should we know about adopting a pair of cats with feline leukemia?
My husband and I are looking to fill our home’s cat vacancy. We thought we were in the market for a single healthy adult cat, but a pair of young cats with FeLV (feline leukemia) absolutely stole our hearts. We have 48 hours to make the decision to adopt them. What should we know? [more inside]
Can a bulimic cat be cured?
Our cat is the poster child of the phrase “scarf and barf.” The vet thinks she can be cured. I think we could spend thousands of dollars and still find ourselves living with a puking cat. Cat-people of Metafilter, have you cured your cat’s bulimia? [more inside]

Microgreens query for kitty
In summer my cat nibbles on grass. For some reason I haven't had much luck growing oatgrass for my cat this winter so she's taken to nibbling on houseplants best left alone.

How do I ensure that my cat eats enough when I am away?
I accidentally acquired a cat - he was a stray that I was taking care of, and one day he just...didn't leave, I guess. He is, in my obviously unbiased judgment, absolutely perfect. He's even not noticeably naughty when I have to leave home for work. There's just one small issue, however. [more inside]
How often do healthy kittens who test + for Panleuk stay healthy?
My adorable little apricot-and-white flame-pointed kitten is being cared for by her foster (who convinced me to adopt her and I am already in love). She went in to be spayed yesterday. After she got to the low-cost spay-neuter clinic, she pooped in the litter box in her enclosure and the vet tech thought her poop was too light in color (though actually it was darker than the food she's been eating), so they gave her a test for Panleukopenia, using the canine parvovirus snap test. It was positive! [more inside]

Feline insulin costs
My wife's old cat (RIP) was diabetic and she used to have to give him insulin shots. This insulin came from a regular human pharmacy but was dirt cheap. Yet I hear stories about humans dying from rationing their insulin because they can't afford more. What's going on? [more inside]
catfilter: chewed through plastic, ate bread
Looks like new kitty got a couple of mouthfuls of wheat sandwich bread and the bread bag that was protecting it, between two hours and a half hour ago. Maybe 4x1'' of soft plastic? I'll give the vet a call tomorrow morning, and I'm keeping her in one room to make sure I can find any vomit or extra-litterbox back end activity. Is there anything else I should be doing to help this breadbeast tonight? [more inside]

Please help me help my post-operation cat not absolutely reek. Please.
My cat had PU surgery on Tuesday, and must wear the cone of shame for three weeks. Obviously, this is so he doesn't lick his butt and undo the surgery.
Unfortunately, this means he can't lick his butt, which was apparently a major aspect of him being a pleasant creature to be around.
Do you have any advice or experience in getting my post-surgery cat to smell less incredibly awful? [more inside]
No longer have the energy to take care of cats post-divorce?
I lived with cats while I was growing up, and took care of my ex's cats while we were married. Now, on my own, I find that I can't take care of a pair of cats that I adopted by myself. Is this burnout from the divorce? Am I just not cut out for solo pet ownership? If the first, how do I get back the ability to take care of things that I had before? [more inside]
