Don't run, don't bike, what do you do?

Need to change my eating schedule, but there's a snag with exercise

For the past ten years, I've been skipping both breakfast & lunch and then consuming all my calories between 8:00 PM and midnight. Eating a lot of food shortly before bed probably isn't healthy, but there's one advantage: My evening runs are much easier after having fasted for 18 hours. [more inside]

How do I take care of my "new" (or current) lungs?

So I have long covid. My lungs have recently been x-rayed and listened to, and doctors have no concerns, so that's good. But breathing *feels* really scary and coughing feels *really* scary. (I'm also starting therapy.) And I wake up with burning lungs. I've never had breathing trouble, and I don't have asthma, so all this is new to me. What are some go-to tips for being kind to my lungs? Buy a humidifier?

Why do my teeth feel tickled when I take a deep breath?

When I take a deep breaths in and out through my nose, my lower front teeth get a sensation that's sort of like being tickled. What's that about? My tongue can be completely covering my teeth when it happens, so I don't think it's that the teeth are actually feeling the air; I presume it's some referred sensation, but from where? Am I freakishly alone in this, or is it a known thing?

What do you do while waiting for a potentially terminal diagnosis?

I've got a medical condition that looks like it's leading to a terminal diagnosis giving me 2 to 5 years. Of course, none of the doctors I've see so far (after 2 lung x-rays, lung CT, multiple blood tests and negative COVID-19 swab) will say so -and I don't blame them. Some doctors (very understandably) get frustrated with my googling. Its a minimum of 2 weeks before I see a lung specialist with Australia's free medival system. [more inside]

Lung damage from coronavirus

Can you get permanent lung damage from coronavirus? I've read some reports that pneumonia from coronavirus is particularly severe because it damages all the lungs (guardian link) and that some patients have trouble breathing (scmp link). Is that something people bounce back from, or materially different from either viral/bacterial pneumonias? Or is it something new that could cause long lasting damage.

How to bring up marijuana usage with doctor?

A loved one has been coughing a lot lately, and it sounds like there could be something serious going on. I brought it up to her; she informed me that she is also concerned and wants to get her lungs checked out, but has no clue what to say to her doctor since she's told him she doesn't smoke and doesn't want to disclose this information for various reasons. Could my fellow MeFites come up with a good way for her to phrase things to her doc so that she feels more comfortable? (More details inside) [more inside]

Help with a puzzling long-term post-nasal drip mystery

For over 2 months I've been battling a persistent post-nasal drip, chest and lung congestion. After visiting a few doctors, I am at a crossroads in understanding what direction to go next. While I understand AskMeFi members cannot offer medical advice per se, I'd be grateful for suggestions or ideas, for example on types of specialists and tests. (Specifics on the situation are inside. I have no insurance and little money, so my decisions on treatment have a major impact financially.) [more inside]

Living near busy streets in Berkeley - effect on child's long-term health?

I'm considering moving in the next few months to a fairly busy avenue in Berkeley - Ashby Avenue, between Adeline Street and Telegraph Avenue. It has two lanes of traffic - one each way - and averages about 19,000 cars a day. I'm worried after reading a few articles - including Black Lung Lofts in the LA Weekly, the Children's Health Study (skimmed it, but couldn't decipher it all) they refer to and others - that living there might have bad long-term effects on my young son's health. Should I be worried? [more inside]

Puff, puff, OWWWWWWW

All my life I've had this problem when doing any sort of cardio activity: my throat can stand my breathing for about 15 seconds before it starts to burn like hell. I've tried breathing differently, asking for medical advice, drinking various beverages before/during/after working out... nothing. It's happened when I've been in better shape and when I'm a lazy slob. So I avoid cardio, which I have always desperately needed. How can I overcome this and work out pain-free? [more inside]

Should I worry about these symptoms?

You Are Not A Doctor: Three weeks ago, I got a nasty head cold that never quite went away. It's now settled into my chest, and I have a chronic, slightly productive cough. Ordinarily, I would just wait it out, but I'm exhausted, can't really get a full breath, and the stuff I'm coughing up tastes like bleach. I swear, I haven't been inhaling or gargling bleach. I do have an appointment to see my doctor on Wednesday (the earliest I could get in,) but I was wondering if anyone else had had these symptoms and could tell me what caused them, so I can quit Googling medical conditions and diagnosing myself with lung abscesses and tuberculosis.

How to keep my lungs warm when biking in the winter?

I'm wanting to do some outdoor bike training this winter, in preparation for going over the Rockies next summer. But, of course, riding in the winter isn't pleasant. The biggest problem I've run into is that my lungs start freezing when I get into a hard climb, while the rest of my body is overheating from the extra layers (essential for big downhills). Any tips on clothing choices that get the best of both worlds, or ways to keep my lungs warm?
