Why do my lungs only resonate when I'm sick?
A few thoughts but that's mostly it. [more inside]
Don't run, don't bike, what do you do?
I used to run for exercise, but I had to stop after developing plantar fasciitis (still suffering from it, going on eight months now). I switched to riding a stationary bike, but now I have to stop because I developed hip pain. What do I do now? [more inside]
Need to change my eating schedule, but there's a snag with exercise
For the past ten years, I've been skipping both breakfast & lunch and then consuming all my calories between 8:00 PM and midnight. Eating a lot of food shortly before bed probably isn't healthy, but there's one advantage: My evening runs are much easier after having fasted for 18 hours. [more inside]
How do I take care of my "new" (or current) lungs?
So I have long covid. My lungs have recently been x-rayed and listened to, and doctors have no concerns, so that's good. But breathing *feels* really scary and coughing feels *really* scary. (I'm also starting therapy.) And I wake up with burning lungs. I've never had breathing trouble, and I don't have asthma, so all this is new to me. What are some go-to tips for being kind to my lungs? Buy a humidifier?
Have you come across a hand sanitizer that smell partly moldy?
I'm talking a mix of sanitizer and mold. How is that possible? How can mold live in alcohol even if the percentage of alcohol is not the highest? What am I missing?
Why do my teeth feel tickled when I take a deep breath?
When I take a deep breaths in and out through my nose, my lower front teeth get a sensation that's sort of like being tickled. What's that about? My tongue can be completely covering my teeth when it happens, so I don't think it's that the teeth are actually feeling the air; I presume it's some referred sensation, but from where? Am I freakishly alone in this, or is it a known thing?
What to expect when someone has bilateral pulmonary embolisms
A relative is in the hospital with bilateral pulmonary embolisms. Heart is fine and while there is more testing to be done, the doctors say that based on what they know so far the prognosis is good. But...so many questions. [more inside]
What do you do while waiting for a potentially terminal diagnosis?
I've got a medical condition that looks like it's leading to a terminal diagnosis giving me 2 to 5 years. Of course, none of the doctors I've see so far (after 2 lung x-rays, lung CT, multiple blood tests and negative COVID-19 swab) will say so -and I don't blame them. Some doctors (very understandably) get frustrated with my googling. Its a minimum of 2 weeks before I see a lung specialist with Australia's free medival system. [more inside]
Lung damage from coronavirus
Can you get permanent lung damage from coronavirus? I've read some reports that pneumonia from coronavirus is particularly severe because it damages all the lungs (guardian link) and that some patients have trouble breathing (scmp link).
Is that something people bounce back from, or materially different from either viral/bacterial pneumonias? Or is it something new that could cause long lasting damage.
How to bring up marijuana usage with doctor?
A loved one has been coughing a lot lately, and it sounds like there could be something serious going on. I brought it up to her; she informed me that she is also concerned and wants to get her lungs checked out, but has no clue what to say to her doctor since she's told him she doesn't smoke and doesn't want to disclose this information for various reasons. Could my fellow MeFites come up with a good way for her to phrase things to her doc so that she feels more comfortable? (More details inside) [more inside]
Help with a puzzling long-term post-nasal drip mystery
For over 2 months I've been battling a persistent post-nasal drip, chest and lung congestion. After visiting a few doctors, I am at a crossroads in understanding what direction to go next. While I understand AskMeFi members cannot offer medical advice per se, I'd be grateful for suggestions or ideas, for example on types of specialists and tests. (Specifics on the situation are inside. I have no insurance and little money, so my decisions on treatment have a major impact financially.) [more inside]

Arranging an interhospital transfer from a good hospital to a great one
My last question was about coordinating care among physicians at different hospitals. It's not working. Now I need to know the safest (but also insurance-covered) way to get my baby to the better hospital in a future crisis. Please share your interhospital transfer (or other related) experiences. Coordinating medical specialists at different hospitals

Sucks to your ass-mar (and your ass-piration?)
My 16 month old has had a winter full of back to back respiratory infections of increasing severity. She has an asthma diagnosis but after a recent terrifying episode and prolonged hospitalization, the pulmonologist is really concerned about aspiration. I'm in the process of scheduling a swallow study. Obviously YANMPediatrician, but please tell me about your experiences with children with severe asthma, or chronic respiratory infections, or aspiration. I'm currently scared shitless, so positive stories and reassurance are especially welcome. [more inside]
Experiencing shortness of breath. Looking for some guidance
On Saturday while kayaking in the bay, I experienced shortness of breath for about ten minutes, which then went away. The last time I’d experienced this feeling was nearly 20 years ago when I was 12, when I last had asthma. [more inside]

When I drink water a little keeps going into my lungs?
I noticed the last couple days almost every time a take a sip of water a little goes down the wrong hole into my lungs and makes me cough. What is wrong with me? I should mention I have acid reflux but I have had it for over a year now with nothing like this happening.
Breathed food into lungs. Will this cause a problem?

Living near busy streets in Berkeley - effect on child's long-term health?
I'm considering moving in the next few months to a fairly busy avenue in Berkeley - Ashby Avenue, between Adeline Street and Telegraph Avenue. It has two lanes of traffic - one each way - and averages about 19,000 cars a day. I'm worried after reading a few articles - including Black Lung Lofts in the LA Weekly, the Children's Health Study (skimmed it, but couldn't decipher it all) they refer to and others - that living there might have bad long-term effects on my young son's health. Should I be worried? [more inside]

Puff, puff, OWWWWWWW
All my life I've had this problem when doing any sort of cardio activity: my throat can stand my breathing for about 15 seconds before it starts to burn like hell. I've tried breathing differently, asking for medical advice, drinking various beverages before/during/after working out... nothing. It's happened when I've been in better shape and when I'm a lazy slob. So I avoid cardio, which I have always desperately needed. How can I overcome this and work out pain-free? [more inside]

"I've been out before but this time it's much safer in."
As an inveterate L.A. bike commuter (not to mention recently losing a close family member to cancer), this article made me wonder what sort of tests I should be having to measure the impact of particulate air pollution on my body. Recommendations? And how often? (I'm biking 30 miles a day in rush-hour traffic, year-round.)

How will I ever get my fitness back after two years of major respiratory problems?
Can I rebuild my lung capacity? And how? In the past two years, I have gone from being a high-level aerobic athlete - one to three hours daily of bike riding or running - to doing almost nothing. The reason? Respiratory problems. It started with asthma, went on to sinus infections, then two cases of pneumonia. I've had two sinus surgeries in the past six months. The good news is I am feeling better. The bad news is that my wind is shot... [more inside]

Upper Back (Lung?) Pain
For the past four and a half years I have had pain in my upper back, between and just below my shoulder blades. It feels to me like its lung pain. It is worse when its cold, and at night (I think because it's cold at night). My doctor doesn't know what it is. Any ideas? [more inside]
Should I worry about these symptoms?
You Are Not A Doctor: Three weeks ago, I got a nasty head cold that never quite went away. It's now settled into my chest, and I have a chronic, slightly productive cough. Ordinarily, I would just wait it out, but I'm exhausted, can't really get a full breath, and the stuff I'm coughing up tastes like bleach. I swear, I haven't been inhaling or gargling bleach. I do have an appointment to see my doctor on Wednesday (the earliest I could get in,) but I was wondering if anyone else had had these symptoms and could tell me what caused them, so I can quit Googling medical conditions and diagnosing myself with lung abscesses and tuberculosis.
Quit Smoking - Now What?
BodilyFunctionFilter: Five weeks smoke free - huzzah! - however, I am worried that I am not hacking up any lung hommous from 8+ years of a reasonably rastafarian rock n roll lifestyle. I am breathing great, but i *know* there should be stuff coming out ... is my worry justifed?
How to keep my lungs warm when biking in the winter?
I'm wanting to do some outdoor bike training this winter, in preparation for going over the Rockies next summer. But, of course, riding in the winter isn't pleasant. The biggest problem I've run into is that my lungs start freezing when I get into a hard climb, while the rest of my body is overheating from the extra layers (essential for big downhills). Any tips on clothing choices that get the best of both worlds, or ways to keep my lungs warm?
