Bird -> cow -> bird -> cow or bird -> cow -> cow?

This question is about the current spread of H5N1 influenza ("bird flu") among cattle in the United States. Is it known whether (a) this is a result of a single bird-to-cow transmission event, after which the (presumably new) cow-infecting sub-strain of H5N1 is spreading solely cow to cow, or (b) a cow-infecting sub-strain is also circulating among birds and each herd that is getting infected is being infected by separate bird-to-cow transmission events? Avian flu and hummingbirds

I know a highly contagious avian influenza strain is going around, causing a lot of concern among chicken keepers and such. I heard that bird feeders should be taken down to discourage congregation and spread of the virus. Would this apply to hummingbird feeders as well? [more inside]

FluMist v. COVID-19

Virologist Robert Gallo recommends getting the live, attenuated nasal spray flu vaccine (FluMist) if you have the option, on the theory that the live virus will prep your immune system to mount a more effective response to the coronavirus (or anything else) in the months ahead. This article came a bit late for me, as I already received a flu shot from my GP in early September. YANMD, but should I seek out the nasal spray version as well? It couldn't hurt, right? Or could it? [more inside]

Handling family member with possible COVID-19

My partner is a possible COVID-19 case. We have young children. I'm anxious enough about this epidemic that I've already asked a previous question about preparing. What is your advice for risk assessment and handling in-home isolation? [more inside]

How is a new virus identified?

So there is a bunch of news about the novel coronavirus and it got me wondering. How do doctors (scientists?) identify a new sickness? Like wouldn't they just assume that it is the flu or something?

Is the flu shot at all effective after one week?

I'm travelling up and down the northeast US starting next Sunday. The first person I'm going to see has told me she's coming down with the flu. If I get a flu shot now (or I guess tomorrow since it's Christmas) will it do me any good?

Days of swine and roses

Odds are that the flu I've had since Friday is H1N1: a Canadian government tracking site says that 97% of diagnosed cases of flu here right now are H1N1. Does this increase or decrease my need for an H1N1 shot when they become available?

Can I stop taking Tamiflu?

I was diagnosed with type-A influenza with a "high possibility" of it being H1N1 on Monday. I have been holed up in my apartment since then, taking the Tamiflu the doctor gave me. But it's making me feel worse - after I take it, I become dizzy, headachey, and nauseated. Can I stop taking it, or should I finish up the pills I've been given now that I've already started on it? YANAD, YANMD (and my doctor only speaks Japanese).

How can I not get the flu?

How can I avoid getting the flu? I have gotten spooked by a couple coworkers who got SICK from the flu, which they caught from their kids, and I am very intent on avoiding the same fate (trouble coming out of both ends). Short of covering myself in saranwrap and lysol, and then hiding in an ICBM silo, what do you suggest? [more inside]

Vaseline on my nose? Good idea? Really?

I've caught my first cold of the season and the frequent nose blowing is irritating the skin near my nose. I seem to remember a suggestion to use vaseline on the irritated skin - does that sound like reasonable solution?
