Balancing bed bug fears with clothing care when travelling

I'm going on a short trip soon where I will be staying in 2 different hotels (that seem very nice!) I have some new clothes I would love to wear during this trip. Looking for general advice on my bedbug precautions and specifically whether a post-trip heat treat of these new items is needed, and if so if my idea is properly balancing actually treating them without ruining them. More below! [more inside]

How much will a mattress protector mess with my bedtime experience?

There's a wave of bedbugs going in southern Europe now. I'm thinking about preemptively buying a mattress encasement, but I'm also a hot sleeper and kind of a diva about my sleeping experience in general. I really like the breathability and quilted pillow top of my currently unprotected mattress; are encasements reasonably comfortable these days, or should I resign myself to the feeling of sleeping on top of an IKEA tote?

heat treating bed bugs

Finally confirmed what I suspected for weeks, we have bedbugs. Heat treatment seems like the way to go (cost no object). I have questions for people who have been through this, particularly about what needs to be removed so it won't be damaged by the heat. [more inside]

This couch is really bugging me

NexGard for humans

My pup takes NexGard once a month to control fleas, and it seems to work. It doesn't prevent bites, but (if the advertising is correct) once a bug bites him, the hoppers die within a short period of time, before they can lay eggs. Would a drug like this, approved for humans, potentially control bedbugs for those infested with them? [more inside]

Bed bugs or not bed bugs?

I can't believe I'm asking one of these, but here we go. Bed bugs or not bed bugs? Pictures: one, two, three. Bed bugs - keep them from moving with me!

My fiance and I recently had a run-in with bed bugs at our apartment. Last Saturday we had the entire apartment heat-treated, and we're due to move to a new apartment this Friday. As of yesterday, "new" bites are still showing up on my arm, even though we passed post-treatment inspection by a bed bug dog. Is it likely that these are just a delayed reaction from old bites? What reasonable precautions should we take to ensure we don't carry any remaining stragglers with us to the new apartment? [more inside]

Bed bugs, Y/N? (Time warp edition)

For the past couple of days, I've been getting bitten by things at night. is this dresser too good to be true? in other words, is it bedbugs?

I found a dresser on the sidewalk in Brooklyn yesterday, the 30th. I rushed to take it, since it appeared to be of very high quality and, having recently moved, I needed one! Now, I'm paranoid I may have exposed myself to bedbugs - not because of any obvious empirical evidence, but because the risk in New York City is purportedly so high, and the piece could have been thrown out because of an infestation. (It could also have been the casualty of a move.) The only possible visual sign of any infestation is here, in the base of the dresser: http://imgur.com/ARBrX3K This white substance scattered and disappeared when I tried to scoop a bit of it up with some paper. I think it's probably wood shavings from the dresser itself; an extensive search turned up no obvious signs of droppings, shed skins, the things themselves. But this white, salt-like substance does not seem altogether inconsistent with eggs. Should I get this thing out of my apartment immediately?
